Course Description

This is an introductory course on Vagrant designed to show how to setup local development environments using Vagrant and related tools.

Course Outline

Introduction provides an overview for the course, cover the core concepts for Vagrant, how to get the course materials.

Quick Installation provides streamlined, fast instructions on how to setup Vagrant, VirtualBox, and other tools needed for the rest of the course on both Windows and Mac platforms. See the Bonus section for full installation processes.

Quick Start walks through the basics of using Vagrant and how to version control (using Git) a project using Vagrant.

Boxes covers how to find, manage and use Vagrant boxes.

Provisioning covers how to write shell provisioners to automatically install software when Vagrant first runs or on demand. Students write a real shell script to provision Tomcat in their Vagrant managed virtual machines.

Conclusion has some final thoughts on Vagrant.

Bonus! sections provide comprehensive, step-by-step installation processes for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Course Features

Presentations provide audio/video training of conceptual ideas in each major area or introduction of new concepts.

Screencasts provide a video of the instructor's computer system with any actions, commands, or screens displayed and narrated. There are several hours of screencat video content -- it makes up the vast majority of the course.

Several attachments throughout the course provide supplemental information, illustrations, or other reference material.

With nearly 25 years of programming and software development experience, I started out teaching myself programming while in High School. I put myself through college working for a local Internet Service Provider as a programmer. Before finishing college, I developed and sold an award winning website to a Dot-Com start-up. After college, I have worked at several companies ranging from start-ups to large enterprises focusing on Java and client-side technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript). Throughout my career, I have opportunity to learn many software development best practices and exposure to several version control systems.

I found this course very interesting and very well done. I appreciated very much the clear way the instructor introduces topics. If I can say something in order to improve the course: some Url are not anymore valid, so Jason you can eventually consider changing them. In addition would be great, if you decided to add a page... a sort of cheat sheet or quick reference with all the command. maybe in the future. Anyway, thanks alot for this course Lorenzo

Overall the course was good and would recommend it. I'm now creating my own virtual machines and have a much better understanding. However, I think it can be improved by adding a section to explain in more detail the problem we are trying to resolve and how Git, Vagrant and Virtualbox work together to archive this. I would like to know more high level information about Git and Vagrant, maybe some diagrams, flowchart and reference guide would be helpful. Overall good, thank you Jason.

This course will give you the basic of using Vagrant. Everything is explained in detail. His command line input large enough that you can open a terminal and follow all. The only reason this is not a 5 star is because it has not been updated to reflect the new Hashicorp(makers of Vagrant) url to get boxes. https://app.vagrantup.com/boxes/search. Since boxes are what make Vagrant work, this is important factor to me. Once you choose a box for you, everything else in the course works purr-fectly I have used the lessons to get Docker in Ubuntu Bionic. Now docker actually works for me on my Windows 10 without docker toolbox work-around.

Very good course for beginners. Concepts are well explained and it is generally easy to follow along with each lecture and exercise. However, some of the content appears to be out-dated (today is 11-25-2018), and it is not clear where the extra resources are to be found (github repository for the course; this was found in an answer to one of the questions, not clearly stated somewhere in the course syllabus). Overall, I'm very pleased with the course and will be taking more courses from this instructor.

Nicely done. The course is as described an overview of vagrant but there's enough detail that you can see the possibilities. The slides and video are polished and obviously professionally created. I didn't think I would like having the course broken into many smallish segments but that's actually kind of handy. There are plenty of stopping points if you need to break, plus this makes it convenient to return to specific content.

It was an awesome starter course for beginners learning the vagrant tool. That being said, two minor problems were: - No linux vagrant setup. - Sometimes the instructor repeated itself.

This course has provided me a good jumping off point with Vagrant. As with any course, as soon as it's published it's practically outdated, so I did have some other learning opportunities surrounding specific versions of Vagrant with Windows10. There is a slight hiccup when vagrant up is launched with Vagrant version 1.9.4 in that it will bail out and take the VM down. Upgrading 1.9.5 or downgrading to 1.9.3 solved this issue. Not holding this course accountable for that issue of course. Great job Jason, well presented.

All together just about 1 hour of learning. Good basics (about 10 vagrant commands all together), but on the side a lot off-topic git stuff and 1 hour "bonus" section that just gives you a click by click walk through of installing programs (so no value here). All together I would rate the content at most at about 5€/$. So I was not satisfied at all. Suddently at 50% course completion it was over. On the other hand it seems that the teacher knows his content. His teaching style is good.

This course provides the basis of what someone needs to know to become effective and productive in using Vagrant. The instructor's presentation style is clear and the production value of the videos is high, which helped me stay engaged throughout. Some Vagrant commands and topics were not covered, but I consider the omission of most commands and topics to be acceptable of a "quick start" course. One topic that I wish had at least some cursory coverage is the creation and provisioning of Windows boxes; only the creation and provisioning of Linux boxes is covered. Despite that single shortcoming, I believe that this course will prove to be extremely useful to most students.

Great course to rapidly learn the basics of Vagrant. The instructor provides quick, 2-5 minute videos so that your attention space is maintained and only one learning objective is covered. Nicely structured and easy to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Quick, concise, and most importantly, practical.
