Course Description
Are your paintings tight and lifeless? Do they take forever to finish? Do you want to loosen up and become much freer in your style? Do you want to grow in confidence as a painter? Then this course is for you!
In this unique 7 part course I'll teach you how to paint in a fast, loose and free style. Each part of the course is based on the style and methods of a particular master of watercolor impressionism. From these great artists you will learn how to paint in a way that is free, fast and full of expression and passion. The course will be most suitable for those who already paint in watercolors but is really for anyone who just wants to loosen up. The lessons are not difficult, so even beginners will be able to follow along.
- The 7 parts of the course look at the work of
- Frank Webb,
- Edward Seago,
- John Yardley,
- Claude Croney,
- Jack Merriott,
- Tony Couch, and
- Edward Wesson.
I suggest you take the course one step at a time, and so build up your skills. With each lecture there is an audio introduction which will help you to get started. Then download the pdf pages that show you step by step what to do, and also give you more ideas and information. Finally watch the video of me painting the project, and then have a go yourself.
I suggest you take a project a week, so that once you have painted the set piece you can spend some time practicing the techniques before moving on to the next project.

I have taught painting for many years, both in adult education classes and also over the internet. Through my online courses I have taught thousands of people to paint since 2005. I have lead a number of painting holidays in the UK and overseas, and for a short time I was an instructor with Derwent Pencils. For five years I worked in ceramics, painting large tiled wall murals to commission.
I now teach art online, write articles for Leisure Painter magazine in the UK, and write a weekly blog which you can find on my website.
I am originally from England, but now live in southern Spain with my lovely wife Donna.
My interest in painting goes back to my childhood, and I have learned throughout my life the skills and ideas that have kept me painting and which I now hope to pass on to you. I love working in watercolors and gouache, and also in oils and acrylics. Each of these requires a different way of working, but I always aim to keep my paintings lively and fresh. I always want to convey something of the heart to anyone looking at my paintings.
The exercises and painting projects in my courses have all been thoroughly tested over time and proved to work well, and I am constantly amazed at the speed at which students improve. I hope you enjoy learning with me!
ps. check out my book on Amazon called: "En Plein Air - sketching and painting in the great outdoors" if you want more inspiration for painting.

I learned a great deal from this course on how to extract salient features from a scene and paint them in an economical yet expressive way. Andy chose great examples from different artists to copy and learn from, and I found his videos very instructive in learning how to approach these types of paintings. I did have one problem: the pdf with the sample paintings for Lessons 8 was missing from the Resources folder.

Perfect course for the beginner, before learning to paint too tight & tidy. It is good practice to see that you really don’t have to fuss too much when painting landscapes. Also not necessary to paint everything you see. I would have preferred to see how this artist tackles a real photograph instead of copying other artists’ work.

A wonderful course to learn about some of the masters and the discipline of letting go. I thought I would breeze through this course but surprisingly I found it very hard to let go and paint fast. But Andy offers much encouragement and makes it look so easy. In the end I'm really happy with my results and I have new skills from being pushed me out of a comfort zone.

Easy to follow. Simply presented. Not too much extra speaking. Just 3 or 4 different colors. Nicely paced.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I will go over it again . I learned so many techniques and just appreciation for this impressionist style. I think it is so rich and much more interesting than realistic painting. I have a long way to go but I will keep trying. The only suggestion I have is to add subtitles to your course! I had a hard time understanding. The written notes were great help. I hope I find another class from you.

the videos do not play well - they stop about about 10 seconds and then pause for up to 4 - 5 minutes so it is impossible It has improved over time - not sure what made the difference to the way the videos played but so much better -Thanks - the content was really useful and great to have the added resources of PDF sheets

Instructor had an easy flow to his explanations. Left the lessons with the feeling that I could replicate the style even though I am bit of a newcomer to watercolor painting. Would like to have more info as to what paper the instructor was using. Overall I am pleased with the instruction.

I love the sketchiness of this style! Can't wait to see more. My other favorite thing was what I learned about color mixing. Many of the practice paintings were done with a very limited palette--3 or 4 colors max., mixed to achieve various tonalities and dark/light contrasts. Overall, a very very useful course. thanks!!!

This is a great primer to get your watercolor practice in. The class is about exploring new and different ways of painting by copying the paintings of the WC masters. This takes away the pressure that often comes with trying to produce original 'good' art. Also great to use if you happen to find yourself in a creative block.

These are wonderful exercises for developing a loose (or looser) application of watercolors. I love painting landscapes and admire watercolor painters whose work seems fresh and loose--almost effortless. I now think it's possible to achieve that myself. The examples (wonderful landscapes by professional watercolorists) seem carefully chosen to allow for a quick painting with good results. And I appreciated all the tips, advice, and encouragement.
