Our take
Based on the ratings of 2,346 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short primer, about 2 hours across 49 lectures and 7 sections. It walks through writing XSL stylesheets and templates, addressing nodes with XPath, a small event management use case, and then XQuery basics. The listing itself says people without XML knowledge should not take it, and the work is done in Eclipse, with a quick setup section at the start. About 12,000 students have enrolled.
Reviewers like the short chunks, the steady build from one idea to the next, and the quizzes. Instructor Bharath Thippireddy is described as clear and easy to follow, though one student says he sometimes rushes and skips detail, such as how apply-templates is scoped, and had to look it up on YouTube. The complaints are consistent: it is basic, the assignments are easy, examples only transform to HTML, and there is no coverage of XPath axes. One reviewer says the opening lectures have low production value but improve. Roughly 2,000 of 2,346 ratings are four or five stars.
The course was refreshed in September 2026, and one reviewer says newer tool versions still match what is on screen. Think of it as an afternoon to get oriented. One reviewer says books and further practice are needed afterward. If you know XML and want that orientation, it is a sensible pick. Anyone after depth should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Short lessons, about two hours in total, that suit a single sitting or a short attention span
- Four quizzes and three assignments give real hands-on practice alongside the instructor
- Builds step by step from XSL templates to XPath to XQuery, each part leaning on the last
- Updated in September 2026, and reviewers say newer tool versions still line up
Cons
- Too basic for some: low-star reviews miss XPath axes and deeper looping coverage
- Instructor sometimes rushes and skips detail, for example how apply-templates works
- Examples transform only to HTML, not XML, and the assignments are easy
Excellent course. Topics are presented in concise videos. Working hands-on with the instructor provides much more value than just watching a video.
Listed as all levels, but it assumes working XML knowledge. HTML and Eclipse experience help but are not required.
What you will learn

Course Description
Sample of the reviews:
A clean tutorial, very useful, unfortunately we are obligated to develop on Eclipse IDE. I know we have other alternatives and this course is the fundamentals, that's why I gave it five stars, the lessons were most important then the Eclipse. \o/ Thank you so much teacher, I hope use it in the future... too close future. - Rodrigo Chagas de Miranda
Respond
Good intro course to the topic. Easy to follow along, pacing is good, and sections are broken up into chunks that don't drag on too long. Another good course by this instructor. - Jim White
It certainly was a good match. This course had provided me with the basics of XSLT, XPath & XQuery. The material was presented in an easy to follow format and the exercises certainly helped to grasp the concepts. This will help me to move to more advanced concepts and will certainly apply this in my day to day duties. Thank You! - Sergio Sabás

tbh, i wasn't expecting much as I already have a good knowledge on this topic. But this course totally surprised me. It covers all the elements in a very efficient way. The examples provided are right on point. It's also easy to follow. I learned this topic by reading a few boring books. I wish I could meet this course a lot earlier. But again, a video tour re-enforced many things. I really enjoyed this course.

The course was good, and the instructor is knowledgeable. I would have given this a 5-star rating, but the instructor sometimes rushes and does not explain certain concepts in details. For instance, XSL Templates. He used the xsl:apply template syntax without explaining its scope in the xsl file, which was a bit confusing. I had to go to YouTube to first understand it, before continuing with the course. All in all, I learnt a lot from this course, and I recommend it to anyone wishing to learn xml transformation to different formats (such as XML or HTML).

This course is very beginer's course. It is a very good starting point for XPATH, XSLT and XQuery. After this one needs to read books and explore these XML technologies. But the instructor does his job very well. Things are explained in a proper and understandable way.

Interesting and useful, but there are too many lectures. There could easily have been one lecture of 10 - 15 minutes covering 3 - 4 subjects at a time in stead of each subject getting 3 minutes. It feels like it's spending more time loading than learning.

The examples and work flow are very clear and easy to go back to. Half of the course is given over to the challenge of installing additional tools and libraries. This is handled cleanly and concisely and does not detract from the learning at all.

This course is very punctually prepared, unfortunately, it is little far from that, how is XSLT technology used in projects, on which I am working. Doesn't matter I have solid basics foundations and it valuable also. Thanks, Your Hariprasad Hajič

I was in need of a quick tutorial on xslt. I had to get a task done on the next day at work, took this course and deliverable done. As the title says it is fundamentals and that was what I needed as well. A very good intro to the subject and the instructor did a very good job in covering the subject. Thank you!!
