Course Description

The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are 196 Indian sutras (aphorisms). The Yoga Sutras were compiled prior to 400 CE by Sage Patanjali, taking materials about yoga from older traditions. The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali was the most translated ancient Indian text in the medieval era, having been translated into about forty Indian languages and two non-Indian languages: Old Javanese and Arabic. The text fell into obscurity for nearly 700 years from the 12th to 19th century, and began to regain popularity in late 19th century due to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, the Theosophical Society and others. It gained prominence again as a comeback classic in the 20th century.

Before the 20th century, history indicates the Indian yoga scene was dominated by the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Vasistha, texts attributed to Yajnavalkya and Hiranyagarbha, as well as literature on hatha yoga, tantric yoga and pashupata yoga rather than the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. In the 20th century the western practitioners of yoga elevated the Yoga Sutras to a status it never knew previously.

Scholars consider the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali formulations to be one of the foundations of classical Yoga philosophy of Hinduism.

In this course, R. Alexander Medin shares his interpretation of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. He translated the Sanskrit writings into Norwegian many years ago.

You will uncover the meanings of many Yoga principles including:

Yama
Niyama
Asana
Pranayama
Pratyahara
Abhyāsa
Kleishas
Vrttis
Ishvara
Niyamas
Antarayas and much more...

With this new knowledge you will embark on a new voyage of discovery, discipline and connection.

Additionally, you will learn about Norway's number one Yoga Retreat center, how to make some delicious smoothies, and our thoughts on Love, connecting and Ashtanga Yoga.

The course provides a short theoretical foundation on Patanjali Yoga. However, incorporating practical exercises and recommended books would enhance the learning experience. Feels Nosen is a great place to visit. Overall, it's very good.

Teacher is great. 5 stars for his knowledge and the way he explains. But this course desperately needs more and better graphics! Subtitles in Devanagari for the Sanskrit he speaks and of course and at least, the written sutra that he is explaining. The lack of these graphic explanations makes this course and knowledge harder to understand. Graphics would support alexanders Medin's great explanations and make it more accessible for beginners.

The instructor of this course Mr Alexander Medin is a very knowledgeable person. His has excellent knowledge of Patanjali Yoga sutras. It was amazing how he describes the meaning of Shlokas. His pronunciation and knowledge of Sanskrit is really great.

So far I like it. What would be nice is this: Let the sutras in sanskrit pop up on the screen so we can not only hear them but see them too - This would help tremendously, especially when one has a yoga sutra and is trying to follow along with it

I Love How There Was Sanskrit And English. So We Could have a better understanding of what patanjali was really saying. even through diaclect change.

By Gabriella Dodero on 3/2/2019

I am not a native English speaker and I can follow the instructor videos almost 100% with minor replay. In such cases normally I would turn captions on, so to follow with less stress. However, captions are terrible since some terms from yoga are totally misunderstood (example: "the seer"--> see her, sea here,...) It would be better not to have the captions options, or a warning to use them with much critical effort

It's the first tutor of sutras of non-Indian origin who would know the subject so deeply & seriously I've ever met! A well-structured course, nicely explained and shared. Grateful for your knowledge. Thanks all the participants of the videos. An excellent course ! Will be my video-book till the end of times. Namaste.

I appreciate this course deeply. The wisdom and depth of knowledge Alexander shares is truly enriching. This is a eloquently insightful introduction to Patanjaliʻs Yoga sutras, BUT this course only covers the first 2 books, when there are actually 4 books total. I didnʻt realize that until after I had purchased the course, so that was a bit disappointing. It would also be nice to have handouts/pdfʻs available for download with the teachings and explanations of each of the terms to follow along with, but I understand the purpose of this discourse and know I can always listen to it again. Overall, this is a good intro course to understanding the deeper meaning of Yoga and I definitely recommend it!

Inspirational from the testimonials. The instructor passionate to share his knowledge for the students well being. Highly recommended especially for students such as my-self who have had first class tuition on a subject i previously had never studied. Nancy Thomas-Ward

I’m enjoying listening to this course . I was a bit mistaken and thought that this course has yoga postures as well . However , now I realise it’s purely a study of the scriptures . Nonetheless I am happy to be learning the ancient knowledge and theory behind yoga . Perhaps meant to be for me at this moment !? It’s easy & clear to listen to and understand .
