Course Description

Kotlin in one hour?!

Well, yes!

Why an hour? Because that's all you need as an experienced developer!

We'll see the basics constructs of the language - variables, conditionals, loops, strings and arrays. Being an experienced developer you probably don't need an explanation of "what a loop is" but you want to see how loop is done in Kotlin. This is my attitude through all this course - I won't waste your time in telling you things you already know. I'll try to show you new things and give you the direction to go on.

Developers: want a fast introduction to Kotlin? If you're familiar with Java, I can help you get up to speed in just a couple of of hours.

Kotlin is a fascinating new language that's attracted lots of attention, including from Google. In this short course you'll get to know Kotlin and its essentials. You'll be able to start writing code in no time.

If you are an experienced developer and heard the buzz about Kotlin - this course is for you.

If you are a Java developer and want to dive into Kotlin, I'll help you translate your Java knowledge into Kotlin expertise in no time.

If you are a Java developer and heard all those talking about Kotlin, but you don't know where to start - start here. Your java knowledge will be translated quickly into kotlin.

In this course I'll show you the essentials of this young and amazing language. We'll work with the IntelliJ IDE but if you just want to taste the language without any downloads or installations - that's fine, I'll introduce the Kotlin Playground which is a great tool for writing and evaluating Kotlin on line without any configurations.

We'll see how Kotlin's functions work, and how functional programming is done in Kotlin.

We'll see how OOP is done in Kotlin and what are the main improvements over java.

Finally, I'll give you some suggestions to what else can be done and which topics you might want to get interested in the Kotlin's ecosystem.

Hope you choose to take this course and get to know Kotlin, a fascinating new language!

"As a senior Android developer, i've searched for a *brief and practical* Kotlin course that include all the information to get started with the new language. this course does exactly it - took me all the way from IDE setup to the little but crucial differences from Java. All in all - great value for money"

An excellent course...comprehensive and well designed covering the Kotlin language in a glance. The videos are short to keep the learner engaged and focused to assimilate the language.

I absolutely loved the class. It was amazing because it was short and covered very important parts of the programing. Obviously it is not enough but it was amazing for people who have programing experiences and want to pick up a new programing language as quickly as possible. for cons, I would say there were the last part of one of early videos was not recorded properly, and two of coding examples were not compiled when I wrote them for myself ( I don't know if that was my version of Kotlin or if they were wrong totally).

This course was a nice introduction to Kotlin. I really like that it is assumed one is already experienced with Java so that it can skip straight into the meat of the language without having to explain what types are, how loops work, etc. The only reason I have 4.5 stars and not 5 is that there was some ambiguity of when to use certain ways to do something when more than one way was explained.

This was a nice introduction. I would have appreciated a few more "advanced" topics being discussed as well - things like accessibility modifiers, sealed classes, object expressions, some functional programming built-ins and the like. I started out with the Koans course before watching this tutorial and followed along with the documentation but many of these more advanced topics were not clear enough for me.

Nice introduction to basic language features of Kotlin. It helped me start writing Kotlin code. As it is just an hour course, it does not cover lot of details. Also, it does not cover advanced topics like asynchronous programming (Coroutines, Reactive extensions).

By Maik Fleuter on 10/23/2020

The course met my expectations insofar as it delivered a quick and straight to the point hands-on tutorial to get started with Kotlin. Of course you can't expect any in-depth stuff here, but hey, what can you expect in 60 minutes. Besides that, the Kotlin docs by JetBrains (https://kotlinlang.org/docs/reference/) are excellent and all that you need to dive deeper. What could have been improved: - Give some insight as to where Kotlin is specifically different from Java (overview slides or something would have been nice) - Unfortunately there was not a word on coroutines, which I am especially interested in. Would be nice to find that in a later revision of the course

This was an excellent, quick introduction to the Kotlin language that seems to cover at least the basics. It gave me a great jumping off point and an appreciation on why to dive in and start learning much about this language. However, even just from this course, I know enough that I can start playing around with Kotlin just from the fundamentals presented here. It’s definitely not for beginners, since it does assume that you’re a knowledgeable developer with a good grasp of other languages like Java, but if this person is you and you’re looking to get started in Kotlin, this course is a fantastic way to start the journey. (Also, if you’re a developer or even a technical manager who is simply trying to find out what the fuss is about Kotlin from a technical perspective so you can compare it to what you currently know in your other languages, this course also seems like a good way to do that without investing a massive amount of time.)

This was a good quick start course. Thank you! If I can make a suggestion, I'd advise going over all the slides to make text corrections. In some cases, example code was not correct. For example, in section 10 Loops, in the slide discussing Strings being iterable, the second for loop would not print the results you say it does in the audio. In the slide with range object examples, the second for loop would print the odd numbers, not the even numbers as you say in the audio. I hope this feedback is useful and thanks again for the course!

I appreciated having a short introduction to the language that was well-targeted to experienced programmers. It was delivered by a skilled narrator, though it seemed to have been written by a (mostly fluent) non-native English speaker who often made mistakes in English usage. Many of the slides were dense with text that were just read aloud. Nonetheless, the exercises were useful and the content was worth the time I spent on the course.
