Acoustic Guitar and Electric Guitar Lessons: Getting Started (Udemy.com)

Acoustic Guitar Theory, Fingerpicking, Fretting, Chords: Most Important 25 Videos For Getting Started w/ Playing Guitar

Created by: Erich Andreas

Last updated June 2022

Our take

Based on the ratings of 3,951 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

Erich Andreas has been teaching guitar for decades, and this is his short starter course: about four hours across 28 lectures, split into four modules plus a bonus on thumb muting and strumming. It covers holding the guitar, fretting, the nine chords he calls essential, basic fingerpicking and strumming, and a little theory. About 105,000 students have enrolled. It is really aimed at day one players. One reviewer describes it as a small section of the teacher's much larger 40 hour course and says it left him interested in the bigger one; another had already bought the full course by the time he reviewed this.

Students like the tone most. Reviewers use the word encouraging again and again, and one notes he tells students to take the fingering exercises calmly and put accuracy before speed. One reviewer calls the support incredible. The complaints are small but real. One finds the opening lectures slow. One reviewer thinks the string muting technique taught can build bad habits. Another wanted a full practice song to tie the chords together, and one hit blank pages in the PDFs in the Mac Preview app. The 4.7 rating from nearly 4,000 reviews is solid, with more than half of them five stars.

Value is the awkward part. The course page still calls itself free, but it is now a paid listing, and its last update was June 2022, so the videos are older and the description has not caught up. Guitar basics don't change, so that matters less than it would for software. Against the longer masterclasses beside it, this is the quick, low commitment option: finish it in a weekend, then decide whether his full course or another one is the next step. A good first pick for a nervous beginner, not the place to stay for long.

Best forNervous first-week beginners who want an encouraging teacher and a short course they can actually finish.
Skip it ifYou already play open chords and want songs, technique drills or a full multi-year curriculum.

Pros

  • Reviewers repeatedly call the teaching encouraging, with accuracy stressed over speed.
  • Short enough to finish in a weekend: about four hours across 28 lectures in four modules.
  • PDF handouts attached to most lectures, plus a bonus section on thumb muting and strumming.
  • Works as a taster of Erich's much longer full course; one reviewer went on to buy it.

Cons

  • Last updated in June 2022, and the course page still describes itself as free when it's a paid listing.
  • One reviewer finds the opening lectures slow, and another questions the string muting technique.
  • No full practice song to tie the chords together, and one reviewer hit blank PDF pages in Mac Preview.
I am a complete beginner and find this course encouraging. I'm glad I chose this one. The support for the course is incredible, too.

Genuinely for day one players: no skills needed, just a guitar and a willingness to practice. Intermediates will outgrow it fast.

Creo que está bien, he entendido la manera en la que debe sostenerse la guitarra y cómo posicionar los dedos. No puedo esperar a aprender a tocar acordes! Quiero decir también que el profesor es muy chevere, siempre nos anima a querer seguir aprendiendo y disfrutar el proceso y hacer los ejercicios de digitación con calma, priorizando la precisión sobre la velocidad. Es genial!

Just started and did the introduction but it was really informative. The course in its entirety was very informative. There are many aspects which are not taught in guitar classes because it is taken for granted but it was really good for attention to be focused on these aspects directly. Another matter which I got bogged down with before was learning the notes by rote and it was really helpful to do the exercise of writing down the notes along the entire neck of the guitar. Writing down the notes in the various major scales was an eye opener. Overall a very helpful course which filled in many of the blank spaces which are taken for granted by guitar teachers.

Erich is simply awesome. I started playing 2 years back and left after a month because I was not able to play the chords as my fingers was touching other strings. But he made it so clear that now I can play chords clearly 95% of the time within a week time. I know, I am moving forward now with him. Also I enrolled the other course of Erich. I have become a fan of him. I will be with him for all my guitar learnings. Thank you Erich, you are really awesome.

This is a fantastic course. Not much left out that I can see, and all basics well explained. Already I can see an improvement in my playing, with notes sounding much clearer. I like the friendly and professional style of the tutor. I'm a classic / folk song piano player, but I used to play the classic guitar quite well about 40 years ago. So for leisure and personal entertainment / enjoyment purposes, I've decided to do this now. I'll be 70 years old next birthday. Playing & listening to music keeps one young and happy !

I'm older (almost 60) and I've been trying to learn to play guitar using books for a few years. I thought I was doing okay, but when I saw Erich's lessons, I realized I've been making a lot of mistakes with the way I shape chords, the way I strum and the way I sit when I play. All of which have been holding me back. The strumming lessons clarified a number of things that I had read and thought I understood, but hadn't been able to incorporate into my practice. I already notice a difference, for the better, in my playing. Thanks!

Not much more to say other than a great job. Essentially I really well paced comprehensive introduction to the guitar. Like most other courses I have taken the one thing that could take this to a 5 star is if there was a section showing what the completed lessons should sound like. I have a few music books and the problem I find is that I complete the lessons, thinking that I understood and then some months later I run across a similar pattern and realize that my timing or fingering of the piece wasn't quite right. Other than that, this was an awesome intro course. Thanks

So I subscribed to this course on a Monday, fresh after just buying my first Acoustic Guitar. It is now Friday and I have worked my way through all of these videos as well as bought the 'Masterclass' version. My biggest plus with these videos is that Erich is very reassuring, he made me feel like I am going to get this and that I should enjoy the experience of learning. He works at a steady pace and goes through all of the basics with you. At the end of these videos I can play chords and transition between them. My next step now is to put them together into a song. I am very grateful and very excited for my next steps. Thank you Erich, keep being awesome.

Erich Andreas is an excellent instructor and this is an excellent course. He includes a lot great information and PDF’s for reference material. One thing I liked among many is the Dexterity Exercise 1 – great learning exercise that builds strength and confidence. His PDF shows many variations of this exercise also. Erich goes slow and is encouraging every step of the way. Thank you Erich for a great course. I’m going to go over the course information and exercises and continue to increase my knowledge and abilities.

Who wouldn't be quite satisfied with this free course? Instructor, Erich Andreas, was helpful and encouraging in just the right way for any beginning guitar player to feel at one with his instrument and not have it intimidate him/her. The only parts of "Getting Started with Playing Guitar" which seemed too long were the choosing of either acoustic or electric...cool guitars to look at in the meanwhile, but rather needless since most would've already chosen their own guitar by the time they get this otherwise swell course made to conquer finger obstacles of making musical notes and chords on the frets. That curled-knuckle technique is now helping me a great deal, and so here I'll really thank you, Erich Andreas, for having me able (in my mind) to cut off the demon's tail my guitar was growing! Good luck with your teaching!

So far this has been a very good course for learning to play the guitar. However, it is slow to start and seems like you are having lots of information thrown at you. In addition, transitioning from playing a chord at a time to trying to read tabs was a difficult one. I don't know where to go after I finish this course, so a follow-up course would be nice, or at the very least more practice with tablature.
