Advanced Java Programming (Udemy.com)

He doesn't really explain anything. He simply writes code at lightning speed and then runs it. Might need to get a new keyboard after the pounding my space bar has taken from having to stop the video every ten seconds. Also, if you don't know all about the topic of a certain chapter, don't bother with that chapter. He doesn't teach anything, he simply shows implementation. This was great for several of the topics for me. However, I didn't learn anything new, just how to code things that I already understood.

Good course. Candidate for an update to 1.8. A few times, code is quietly (behind the scenes) changed by instructor, but there is no explanation. Lacks explanation for most common types of issues - such as - unable to connect to mySQL tables. If the user doesn't connect, they have to hold on and just watch the instructor. Good course overall though - many subjects to set the student up for further investigation.

The instructor has a very effective way of teaching and hes also very skilled when it Comes to explaining stuff. The only Thing i would "critizise " are the excersises. Instead of making a Video like in all the other lectures he should give the excersise as a text, so we can try out to Code it without him, and watch the Video afterwards. PS: Respect, for coding all the time without a fancy Environment :D

Perfectly clear and effective course that introduced me to many new Java concepts. Only critique I have is that I couldn't get TomCat working and there was no coverage of things to do to set it up in the event that it did not work as shown in the video.

Better as an intro to many advanced topics, as he says in the intro and through the course many of the topics included could be taught as a whole course. But he opens the door for you to get a taste of these topics and hopefully make you want to go learn more about them. Overall pretty helpful to point me in the right direction.

The instructor gives a taste of a variety of topics. The course isn't that old, but relies on Java 6 and all the code is written in Notepad until the very last chapter when the Eclipse IDE is introduced. It's discussion of most topics is useful and informative, though the Applets section could be improved and the Servlets section is virtually incomprehensible because it is so difficult and time-consuming to get the environment setup before anything works. (It never worked for me, so I ended up just watching the videos without following along.)

The course covers a lot in a very short time, just enough to give you a feel of where you want to go next with your Java skills. Highly recommendable!

About a third of the material covers topics like generics and exceptions which should be covered in a basic Java course, while the advanced topics are only covered superficially. Important subjects like Swing and JDBC are only given 15-20 minutes of lectures each! So if the material in "Advanced Java Programming" isn't particularly advanced, how about the programming? Unfortunately, this is very much at the basic level, with "baby" examples written in a single class in the default package. Each subject is covered in isolation and there is no attempt to combine and consolidate previous topics to create more interesting (or even useful) programs. A couple of the examples are unnecessarily convoluted and there are a few which contain clear mistakes. There are also "silent edits" in some of the videos where the lecturer shows some code which contains an error but which runs smoothly. Then the lecturer returns to the code, where the error has been magically corrected. Meanwhile the student who has been typing along has spent a lot of time trying to work out why their identical code doesn't even compile. The lecturer does not appear to be active in the course forum, where students have asked a number of questions. All in all, rather a disappointing course. Although I did learn quite a few things which seem as though they should be useful, I didn't learn very much about them. I found it difficult to maintain my interest and my only real motivation to keep going was to complete the course.

Great tutorial series, I'm a 3rd year computer science student, so some of the topics were a review - but its great to see other practices of code to do similar tasks. I wish there were more detail and time spent on the GUI/swing side of this course, as its still close to impossible to build a "Nice Looking" application from this video series.

I understand that the aim was to give a glimpse of each topic without going into too much detail bit it would be nice if it gave more context info and tips on each topic. At its current form it's more like a set of random examples typed into notepad with very minimal explanation.
