Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,300 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a beginner's tour of Ayurveda from Janet M, a former San Francisco police officer who left that career for yoga, Ayurveda and Vedic astrology. Across 73 lectures and about 8 hours she covers the five elements, the three gunas, the three doshas, the six tastes, and daily habits like the neti pot and tongue cleaning. There are no quizzes or assignments, and the course has not been updated since July 2019. It suits people who are curious about the framework and want to work out their own constitution, not anyone hunting for a clinical or certification-level program.
Reviewers mostly like the teaching. They say Janet explains things well, uses plenty of visual aids, and goes back to update lectures when students ask questions. One yoga instructor calls it a useful refresher. The complaints are consistent, though. The Basic Western Physiology section runs 18 lectures and about 145 minutes, close to a third of the course; one student says she was not expecting an anatomy course, and another asks how it fits with the rest. One three-star review found the instructor rambled and corrected herself as if she had no notes, and a four-star reviewer wished the doshas came first so the rest made sense.
With about 1,300 reviews and a 4.7 average, roughly 85 percent of ratings are four or five stars, so the grumbles are real but not deal-breakers. Compared with the diet planning and decluttering courses it sits beside, this one is more philosophy than checklist. If you want a warm, personal introduction to Ayurveda and don't mind the detour into physiology, it holds up. If you want a tight, scripted syllabus, look elsewhere.
Pros
- Clear, personal explanations of the doshas, gunas and six tastes, backed by lots of visual aids
- Reviewers say the instructor goes back and updates lectures when students ask questions
- Practical daily routine lectures: neti pot, tongue cleaner, digestion and bowel habits
- A yoga instructor says it works as a refresher on Ayurveda origins, routines and self-healing
Cons
- Nearly a third of the runtime is a Western anatomy block that at least one student didn't expect
- Some lectures feel unscripted, with rambling and mid-lecture corrections
- Last updated in 2019, and there are no quizzes or assignments to check understanding
Lots of information, great intro course. Easy to follow, lots of visual aids. However, it felt like there was something missing to connect it all together.
Marked All Levels, but it is really a first course; no prior knowledge needed, just an open mind and patience for basics.

Course Description
This course is designed for students of all kinds whose main desire is to focus on preventative health care. It is no secret that in these modern times, we have deviated slightly from a holistic perspective. What does that mean? That we have forgotten that we are all interconnected beings, not only with other humans, but with nature itself. What happens in nature, happens in us. We are the five elements. Learn what those five elements have to do with your health.
This topic and many more may be found in this course. Most people are looking for a way to lose weight and find their original weight; that is as a result of an imbalance. In this course you will also find a very thorough assessment so that you may better get to your perfect state of balance and discover in which area(s) you are out of balance.
This course is a comprehensive compilation of the most fundamental and basic topics of Ayurveda. Yet, don't be fooled that because it is a foundational course it is not powerful! The exact topics that you are about to learn are the ones that have kept me healthy for the past eight years without having to visit a doctor. I no longer suffer from any ailments that would blow up into a full manifestation of dis"ease".
Ayurveda is yoga's sister science, and they both act as an integrative system for healing, bringing awareness to your consciousness, and transformation to all levels of your existence. This is no small matter. The time has come to expand your horizons and explore what other methods of prevention have to offer. Invest in your most valuable commodity - your health.

After more than 10 years of witnessing human suffering working as a San Francisco Police Officer, and myself becoming a "victim" of dis"ease", finding an alternative to that lifestyle was not even a question anymore. Courage was my health insurance, and determination my pension plan. I left that life and never looked back. Yet, the most rewarding outcome of my police career was receiving my Basic Instructor Certificate, which I used the last five years to teach leadership to incoming officers at the academy. That amazing experience enabled me to currently lead workshops in Ayurveda.
Yoga, Ayurveda (Indian Medical System), Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), Hasta (Scientific Hand Analysis), and Vastu (Indian Feng Shui) are all passions of mine.
I studied Ayurveda at the California College of Ayurveda and received certification at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm; both in Grass Valley, CA.

Janet, your classes leave me very emotional and in touch with the genuine question of who I am. I love how are you talk about the sister science Jyotisha and how important it is to feed not just the body but the soul and to understand that we are one outside of the human costume we wear. You are a gifted teacher, I say Mahalo Nui for all the gifts that you have shared with me.

Overall, this was a good course. For a while I wondered why the instructor included the Basic Western Physiology section which is currently about 2 and a half hours long, but when I went through it, it made sense, and I was able to connect the dots, so to speak. I'm also in most of her astrology courses and I hope to learn more about traditional Vedic (Parashari) astrology from them, even if my main system is a lesser known one that's also from India.

Brilliant. I do not expect anything from anyone nowadays. This course has given me something that maybe was supposed to come at this time. I am glad that I enrolled for this topic and am happy as I finish all the sections. I recommend this course to everyone. Don't just run after certificates and accreditation, try to learn something for self just for learning purpose without thinking of commercializing everything. Good luck!

Although I enjoyed this course and felt the material was easier to learn than reading several books over the course of a few weeks, I found the instructor was not prepared for many of her lectures. She rambled or corrected herself mid-lecture a few times as though she didn't have notes or an outline for each segment. There were also a few moments where she said things were too complicated to explain-- as a teacher myself, if you can't explain something it is because you don't understand it well enough. There may not be enough words in the English language to encapsulate the nuance of experience and knowledge of Ayurveda and the chemical processes of the body, but that is part of the responsibility of the instructor to prepare for teaching students that want to learn (and are paying for the service/info). The course helped me understand my body a lot better than I knew, it helped me understand ancient Indian rituals and how to better take care of my body through routine and diet. I have learned quite a lot from this and use it every day and tell people around me all about it. I would still recommend this course, but I do hope the instructor revisits lessons and makes corrections or re-records them to be a bit more clear and concise. Thank you very much.

This was a wonderful course! Last year, I heard about Ayurveda for the first time and I instantly felt very intrigued by it. I read a little bit about it here and there, but just recently decided to really dive into learning about it more in depth. This course is very thorough, and has only made me even more excited to learn & implement Ayurveda in my daily life! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, wisdom, and passion, Janet! :)

If I could rate this higher than five stars, I would. Janet instructs this course with genuine caring and passion. I took my time going through this course, because Janet gives such in depth information that I felt a need to take lots of notes on every section and lecture. I appreciate her commitment to share her knowledge of Ayurveda basics. She has a calm delivery and warm personality. Thank you, Janet. It was a pleasure taking your course!

I found the course to be an excellent primer on Ayurveda- especially for someone who was looking to get a solid introduction before investing in a 2 or 3 year comprehensive course to practice professionally. The only suggestion I would have would be to tie the anatomy section of the course to Ayurveda more securely. They felt separate and there wasn't much correlation drawn between the two. Other than that, I really enjoyed the course! Thank you!

I've never been much for online learning, but I really enjoyed this course! I've been interested in learning more about ayurveda and this was the perfect introduction for someone who knew little about it and wanted to learn at their own pace. I appreciated how the instructor made the lessons in short segments, with the videos ranging between 2 - 20 minutes, and the average being around 6 - 7 minutes. This really helped me to feel like I was accomplishing something at the end and enabled me to concentrate on retaining more information. Each of the videos were well paced, and interjected thoughtful and occasionally humorous (like being comfortable with issues of flatulence!) images to keep my attention. I also liked that the instructor offered personal insight and motivation for her reasons to start learning more about ayurveda. It was great to see a "real" example of the benefits ayurveda can have on someone's life and the positive impact it can instill. The examples and suggestions she used to illustrate changes we can make in our lives are practical and can easily be incorporated, whatever may be someone's background or means. I would highly recommend this course and look forward to incorporating some of the lessons into my own life!

This course gave a great overview of the huge study of ayurveda, the history, the facets, and it's relativity to all aspects of life, body, mind, spirit and soul. This course went beyond my expectations. I am encouraged to learn more about ayurveda and hopefully online. The instructor's vocal tone is steady and smooth, her delivery intelligent and welcoming, and her information is precise. I would like this instructor to teach the next level of ayurveda.
