Our take
Based on the ratings of 13,113 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Krista King's Calc 1 course is a short, exam-focused walk through limits and continuity, derivatives, and applications like optimization and related rates. The syllabus shows 21 sections, 217 lectures and about 12.8 hours of video, plus text notes, 76 quizzes and bonus workbooks. It has been on Udemy since 2013, has about 99,000 students, and was last updated in April 2026. It assumes decent algebra, and some trig helps. It suits current calculus students, people about to start, and adults refreshing old math.
Reviewers mostly praise the clarity. Of 13,113 reviews, 9,052 are five stars and 3,246 are four. Students call the explanations simple to follow, and one engineering graduate used it as a refresher and said calculus felt easy afterward. Another says it beats school. The criticism is narrow. Two three-star reviewers say the quiz answers come with no explanation of how they were worked out. One felt there were big jumps between the videos and the exercises, and another wanted more practice and less definition reading. The notes have some typos, though one reviewer calls them negligible.
Plan to pause and work the practice rather than just watch. It is a good pick if you learn best from seeing problems worked on screen. Anyone who wants every quiz answer explained should keep a textbook or a tutor handy.
Pros
- Short step-by-step videos with text notes for each lesson, easy to skim or rewatch
- 76 quizzes plus 19 workbooks give plenty of practice across limits, derivatives and applications
- Covers the tricky topics students worry about, like the chain rule, related rates and optimization
- Updated April 2026 and used by about 99,000 students, with 9,052 five-star reviews
Cons
- Quiz answers show no worked explanation, a repeat complaint in the three-star reviews
- One reviewer felt big jumps between the videos and the harder exercises and workbooks
- Lecture notes have some typos, and a reviewer wanted more practice and less definition reading
Straight to the point Calculus lessons with great resources to go along side with it. Better than school.
Fits beginners with solid algebra. Some trig or precalculus helps but is not required.
What you will learn
- Limits & Continuity, including how to solve every kind of limit problem, and how to find discontinuities in a function
- Derivatives, including all of the derivative rules, the infamous chain rule, and how to do implicit differentiation
- Applications of Derivatives, including two of the hardest topics from Calc 1: optimization and related rates

Course Description
HOW BECOME A CALCULUS 1 MASTER IS SET UP TO MAKE COMPLICATED MATH EASY:
This 292-lesson course includes video and text explanations of everything from Calculus 1, and it includes 76 quizzes (with solutions!) and an additional 19 workbooks with extra practice problems, to help you test your understanding along the way. Become a Calculus 1 Master is organized into the following sections:
Limits & Continuity
Derivatives
Applications of Derivatives
AND HERE'S WHAT YOU GET INSIDE OF EVERY SECTION:
Videos: Watch over my shoulder as I solve problems for every single math issue you’ll encounter in class. We start from the beginning... I explain the problem setup and why I set it up that way, the steps I take and why I take them, how to work through the yucky, fuzzy middle parts, and how to simplify the answer when you get it.
Notes: The notes section of each lesson is where you find the most important things to remember. It’s like Cliff Notes for books, but for math. Everything you need to know to pass your class and nothing you don’t.
Quizzes: When you think you’ve got a good grasp on a topic within a course, you can test your knowledge by taking one of the quizzes. If you pass, great! If not, you can review the videos and notes again or ask for help in the Q&A section.
Workbooks: Want even more practice? When you've finished the section, you can review everything you've learned by working through the bonus workbook. The workbooks include tons of extra practice problems, so they're a great way to solidify what you just learned in that section.
HERE'S WHAT SOME STUDENTS OF BECOME A CALCULUS 1 MASTER HAVE TOLD ME:
“This course is absolutely amazing, I use both this course and the calc 2 course to be able to keep up with accelerated, without this i would be screwed. She's very easy to understand.” - Dean V.
“I'm really enjoying how the course has been simplified and made easy to understand. The quizzes after every section helped solidify the concepts. Everything is explained in detail and with great simplicity. I really like the way Krista teaches, It's quite clear, straightforward and easy to understand. It's comprehensive interactive course and totally worth the time and money! I bought all calculus volumes.” - Ghaith A.
“Very well-made. Instructor explained everything clearly; found no difficulties understanding topics of study through instructor's teaching methods. Done very well, overall! Glad to have invested in this course!” - Anish S.
“AWESOME TUTORIALS! GREAT COURSE! DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!” - Bonnie H.
“There is very clear instructions. I'm learning this before actually taking calculus in college so I can have a deeper understanding of math (I'm a math major). She explains everything very thoroughly and works through every problem as if you're a beginner. I will say that I am terrible at receiving audible information but brilliant with someone showing me how to do something on a board and she makes it very clear at understanding everything. I am very pleased to have this much course coverage. I feel like I have my own personal tutor without the expense. Btw if you like math, trigonometric identities are fun!” - Christian R.
“I am very satisfied with this course. It is very clear, delivers all the interesting topics I like that I am taken from knowing little to actually knowing the calculus including the applied mathematics too. This is only Calculus I but it gives me not only sense of accomplishment and understanding but also the foundation for the future courses.” - Robert B.
“I'm self studying mathematics for my electrical engineering degree and this course has been very VERY helpful. I find myself doing these videos before my homework. It makes me want to keep learning. Thank you Krista.” - Lester S.

The course is really great, I appreciate the effort put into both the lectures and lecture notes. Although some of the lecture notes do have typos, they are somewhat negligible and does not get in the way of the key concepts of the notes.

I have a bachelor in engineering and took this course just to remember a few things and also to see a different approach for the topics I had already learnt. I was amazed by how good all the explanations and materials were. Calculus 1 seems so easy after this course. Amazing!!

I am a follower of krista's courses. Finished Algebra I & II and Geometry, and half or precalculus (Only the material i needed for my degree course to prepare myself). The extensive work is well done and is very organized, and there was incomprehensible amount of work done on this course probably. However, i didn't feel that this course will prepare you well to college/university. Even as having prior basic math knowledge from previous courses, i felt there are too many "Stage jumps". Video lesson explains a concept, you get the feeling that you understand it, and the exercises and the workbook exercises have leaps in the level of math that was taught. moreover, it could be really useful if on the video lesson, there could be given exercises for examples that the teacher is solving, and not just explanation of a concept, which i felt was happening in most of the lectures. To sum it up. Could be great for students that want a quick overview. There are lots of knowledge gaps between lessons and exercises. General feeling of "This course teaches concepts really well, but at the end, I do not know how to solve exercises and prepare for a written test in order to get a high grade"

I enjoy these courses a lot and they are easy to follow for the most part. It has truly helped me a ton in my learning. I will say the only thing that got me a bit, was I felt like the quiz question would be far more difficult than the examples in the lectures and introduce a different concept of said subject. I enjoy that it challenges but if you are wondering how to work out said problem there isnt a walk through or "how to" sort of area for those questions and I think that would have been very helpful.

It's (precisely) fulfills my requirements. I wish to sincerely thanks the instructor for this fantastic course. Some of the other courses on the Udemy platform do not offer precisely what is required. For example, some courses claim to teach you Maths/ calculus from High School to College Level but my personal experience is that in such courses you have to skip or fast forward a lot of videos because the instructor will start from absolute basic level. A lot of which is simply not required by those who are well versed with High School Mathematics. So every time you have to skip videos; you are wasting your precious time and also paying for internet data (metered data is costly in my country, it is perfectly possible that you might purchase a course during Christmas or New Year sale at a cheaper price but may end up spending much more on internet data while trying to completely watch the course). Not only this, if you want to get going fast like able to solve limits, and derivatives without diving deep into theory like proving theorems. This course does just that. Also this course comes with text files in pdf format which you can read, a short quiz of 3 questions each after every topic and a bonus workbook at the end of each section, so it is a COMPLETE learning package. In summary the course is crisp and to the point. However, it is advisable to first have some basics clear before jumping into this course; like if you have done some Pre calculus courses or read (and solved) precalculus books then I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy this course and find it very useful to learn calculus quickly.

The course is extremely easy to understand. All the concepts are explained in a beginner-friendly manner and everything is to the point. I liked that the videos are based on the notes provided just before the lectures; personally, I found reading the notes and then skipping right to the quiz much more efficient than watching lengthy videos.
By Michael Perrine on 2/18/2026
I found the explanations easy to follow. I'm new to calculus and the explanations up to this point makes sense and I'm able to grasp the concepts. I'm looking forward to diving deeper into the course lectures

This is my second course with her. I'm taking calculus 2 next. Completely satisfied with the clear explanations and workings of complex concepts. Would recommend for anyone wanting to learn calculus from scratch. Her trig and precalculus course is a must to get the best benefits if you are not familiar in those concepts.
By Charles Henry May on 11/26/2025
The best person to learn Maths. She makes it clear and easy to understand complex subjects without using complex "jargon" you see in textbooks. I recommend this course along with a textbook to gain deeper understanding of the subject.

excellent teaching it was better than what I had expected
By Miles Jordan on 11/15/2020
Very good course. Took this course to supplement my learning for my calculus I college course and I got an A in the class so the evidence speaks for its self. There are also extra practice at the end of each section that really help me with studying before a big test.
