How to create, use and handle all kind of textures and materials in Blender
Created by: Joakim Tornhill
Last updated June 2021
What you will learn
- Understand the aspects of the Shader Editor when creating cycles nodes.
- Understand how to combine procedural texture with images and the difference between procedural and non procedural.
- Understand the fundamentals for complex materials like glass and volumetric.
- Understand how the UV can be useful in different types of tasks.
- Learn the vocabulary, so thing like caustics, reflection and refraction will be understandable.
- Understand how it is possible to control a materials appearance by using secondary objects like "empties".
- Understand how to use more than one material on an object or create random output.

Course Description
This is a massive course about Materials in Blender. It will guide you from the beginning where you literally know nothing until you reach a level where people envy your knowledge about material. The course touches all aspects around Material and have tons of examples that you will be able to use in your daily work even after you have ended the course.
I will not go through just how you do stuff, but also why and all the terms used. As an example, of many in the course, we build a glass material from scratch that will have both refraction, caustics and all the other complex stuff you have in glass, but will be both faster to render and with less noise compared to Blenders original way to do caustics and glass together.
I also go through different techniques on how to apply material so you get a good grip on how to use UV, apply decals and so on...so it's not "just" procedural even if you will get a lot of that as well. In short...I will cover all you ever will need to know about how to start and understand how material works in Blender.
It's concentrated to the engine Cycles, since Eevee still lacks a few features but most of what you learn, you can do in both engines.

I work on daily basis with Blender and already from my early start, I have been fascinating in how you can create realistic materials right out from nowhere.
I have gone from being "me" to being "Blender Insight... the material guru" on the internet and my goal is to teach everybody that are using Blender, the strength this tool has when it comes to materials.

In general it's a good course, I can say I now have a way better understanding of how to use nodes and create materials/textures. Joakim is very knowledgable and gives detailed explanations both during the course and the Q&A section. However, sometimes I really struggled to follow his way of reasoning and had to rewatch the video several times to understand the logic behind the set of nodes used. Sometimes things are explained in big detail but sometimes they are just thrown there, and I personally find more useful to really understand why a specific setup is used for creating something, rather than knowing many different ways of doing the same thing, but without a proper understanding.

Joakim is obviously a VERY skilled material expert and I have learned a great deal in this course, however, the why's of some operations are obscure, especially when it comes to math nodes. Add to that the clunky interface Blender has and you understand that the effort is double. Plus, I have the feeling that many of the materials shown could be achieved in way simpler, more immediate ways, including a nice blend of procedural, and texture painting. With way less nodes. Still, would still highly recommend this course to anyone interested in materials as a way to get their feet wet in this art.

I found this course very informative about all the shader nodes in blender and how to combine them in a variety of ways to produce different results. There are many different ways to combine these and the Teacher was very good at explaining these and providing examples of each and talking through how to produce them. He also encouraged the students to try things out for themselves and to practice these methods to see what they could produce on their own. Overall the course was very well presented and the Teacher was very good at getting the necessary information across to the student.

The course was great for me, it allowed me to tie togheter loose ends from preexisting theoretical and practical knowledge I had accumulated. Only thing I can point out is that then one feels he/she knows enough to browse a lot more examples... and the course ends. As it should after all the content :) Let me wanting to go and find out more, definitely can recomend it

I now feel confident using materials in cycles in Blender 2.8. If you already know how to model in Blender (or how to bring in models), you'll learn how to create marble, stucco, and other procedural textures using math, shaders, textures, vectors and more. With a little imagination, you can adapt the knowledge you gain to other materials. It's not just a paint by numbers, but we learn about the kinds of nodes and how they work. The one downside is that you need a pretty powerful computer to do some of the exercises, or at least to make sure all other programs are closed. Thank you for the fantastic tutorials, and I look forward to learning more.

I have to say that I have learn a lot from this course and I appreciate the work that the trainer has put in to it. I know it is a difficult subject but I feel that it lakes the explanation for doing certain things . the explanation in some parts is really clear but in others not so much. Overall I liked the course and I like to thinks that I have learn a lot of things. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and I weight for the next one.

Exceptionally detailed class on Cycles materials. It gives you enough detail on hard to intuit aspects of blender if you have little to no experience (like myself), which enables enough knowledge to meaningfully experiment and generate your own ideas and uses. Review written at the half-way point. On an individual dollar to time value basis, I think it could be considered under-priced for most beginners.

The lantern texturing was very good and helpful for my interests. I primarily work with old and rusted objects. This tutorial section was very enlightening on the power of procedural textures for creating a worn and rusty surface. Also, defining outer and inner angles of edge wear was a new and useful concept. The glass simulated dispersion and caustics really brings glass illusions in cycles to another level! I've never found a way to make good use of the wavelength node before. Thank you.

I always tend to use keyboard shortcuts everywhere, which is not taught here. Node wrangler is one of my favorite addon which makes the handling of nodes much easier. At many places I find it a little boring and the video gets stretched because he is using the mouse clicks everywhere instead of just using simple shortcuts. I really wish there are more videos about generating scratches. Anyways, though it is slow, the teacher explains almost everything. He has given a good online course and I am satisfied.

Course was quite comprehensive. Some diagrams would have been helpful, specifically around vectors (length, direction, angle). A picture is worth a thousand words ;-). Also, I fell you may be a bit of a purist in that you never used Node Wrangler even though it is bundled with Blender. It can be very helpful and effective in understanding how each node is affecting the whole as you walk through their connections and it seems it would be much easier than connecting and reconnecting nodes to the Base Color input.... As well, there were some mistakes and the author caught them and annotated them (sometime in funny ways) in the videos but for a couple lessons, it may have been better to simply redo those segments properly, instead of leading the student astray... Overall, quite pleased with the course. The instructor obviously has a penchant for math and uses that to the fullest to achieve amazing things through Blender's node system for materials.
