Course Description

So you have heard about Blender, and you want to jump in on this free but powerful program?

Or you already use Blender, but don't know how to make a character inside it?

Weather you are a complete beginner or a bit more advanced Blender user, you could find something for you in this course.

This is the Absolute Beginners 3D character in Blender course and we will be making this cute guy here concepted by Deema Egorov.

My name is Niko and i will be your host trough this creative journey. I am a 3D character artist working in the industry with more than 13 years of experience. I also have more than 15 courses made for character creation, mostly in Zbrush. Now i started to work in Blender only, and i will show you the workflow to create a 3D character in Blender from scratch, rig, pose and present it. We will make some props to practice hard surface modelling in Blender, but since i am a digital sculptor we will emphasize on the sculpting part. I will show you the complete workflow to make a character with clothes, props, pose and present it for your portfolio.

In the course we will start by going trough the most important things a beginner should know about Blender. Then we will start sculpting pretty quickly and i will make a basic quick human head to show you that sculpting is not scary at all. Then we will start our mouse hero from the head while i show you all necessary things and guide you trough the whole process of creating a character from concept as well as making it fast and easy in Blender. After that we will make the basics of the body, hands and fingers. With each step we will learn new things and we will repeat the things we already learned to solidify our knowledge.

Then we will make the sweater and i will show you few ways of making clothes for your character. After that we will manually retopologize the head of our character, using just the tools that Blender provides by default. Although i will show you much faster and useful addon for automatic retopology - QuadRemesher. We will then detail the head and make the glasses.

Following we will be learning basics of lights, cameras and environment textures. Then we will make the tail for a while, before texturing the eyes. We will jump into manual retopologizing the whole body fast and efficient, using various techniques, invented by my humble self :).

Refining the sweater and making the hood will be our next tasks which we will finish with great success. After that we will make UVs of the head and ears and make some texturing work on that too. Then i will show you some hardsurface techniques by making a cleaver weapon. We will also see some character examples from the game i worked on for 3 years from Gameloft, since i work there for 15 years already :).

It will be time to learn basics of hair and fur making in Blender. We will see how to create, adjust and groom our fur. Then it will be time to learn how simple it is to put bones and rig our character so we can animate or pose it. We will pose it and then fix the pose to achieve best final results. Then we will learn how to make transparent background and floor shadows. Lastly we will see how to make a turntable animation to present our characters from all sides. They are 3D characters after all.

This course is for absolute beginners in Blender and in character art, so no previous experience with any 3D software is required. Of course if you like to draw it is definitely a plus :).

Some people say Blender is a lot of things, but none of them is at the right level. I would say from experience, that Blender is good enough for everything i need to make a full character from high poly to low poly and UVs. In this course we will do a character for portfolio, so we will do a high poly, posing, lighting and rendering. So if you want to make your first character and eventually start your 3D character career, you first have to try it and see if you like it. So lets dive into the world of 3D character creation in Blender!

I have interest in arts since i was a very little kid. I was drawing all the time at school and at home. I was barely going out to play with the other kids, and later go to night clubs. Drawing and books were my passions. Later i became a Graphic Designer and then i was 3D character artist at Gameloft for 15 years. I have more than 10 years of experience with Zbrush, but now i use the amazing free software Blender and make courses and characters with its help.

I'm 2 hours of practice on the 30 minute video learning shortcuts , moving objects, and just about to begin the course of sculpting a character. having lots of fun! As of today Blenders newest version doesn't have the sculpt brushes on the left side all neat, shortcuts are a bit sticky I feel (recommend those to get 3.0 version to match the instructors)

I chose this course as my first 3D modeling course, and now that I've finished it, I can say that it's very useful. It's true that it's slightly old, and the Blender interface has changed a bit since it was made, but apart from that, I can't say anything negative. The instructor teaches through their own experience, which is appreciated, and it also includes some small surprises. Being fun makes it very enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Here's my review. If you are reading this comment, it's because you're looking for a beginner's course in Blender and character creation. If that's the case, I have to tell you that this is an excellent course. Niko makes the classes very enjoyable and natural. By that, I mean he doesn't have everything precisely solved and he takes you through a real flow of character creation. Unlike other teachers, he makes mistakes, corrects himself, and keeps going, which leaves you with a clear message that no matter your experience, you will always make mistakes, forget a keyboard shortcut, or how to do something, but there is always a solution. It has helped me learn the workflow and has also made me feel more confident and unafraid to take missteps since it's natural in 3D. If you haven't decided by this point, don't hesitate; you'll have a great time with his antics and learn along the way. By the way, this is already the second course I've taken, and I'm now going for the Anatomy one and then the Viking, and I'll continue with more. I hope he keeps producing content of this kind, and I hope he does one on anatomy with Blender, just for the fun of it xD. Thanks, Niko, for your work. Greetings from Argentina =)

This has been amazing for a first time experience. I'm already getting so much more comfortable with Blender. I'm reaching that stage where I feel like I can experiment and get myself out of most messes. I would say that I think there are better ways to model the eyes - but everything has been so good for my first introduction to blender. I'll definitely be checking out more videos created by Nikolay (SpeedChar)

Really good course. Nice and easy to follow a long with, teaches you everything you could need to get started with your own characters. Niko is a fantastic teacher, i've done a couple of courses where I have found myself falling asleep. But he keeps it very engaging and the added humour is always appreciated! I have purchased his Demon Huntress course to try and take my skills to the next level! I highly recommend to anyone looking to get into creating characters on Blender

After finally getting a tablet, this was the first Blender sculpting course that really helped me to learn how to sculpt, what tools to use and why, and some humor along the way. Also, as Nikolay said fairly early on in the course (I think?), he explains everything that he does rather than just doing a timelapse over slower parts. Really solid course if you want to learn Blender sculpting

Great course! I've learned new ways and features in blender. I don't think that this course is the best for a complete beginners in blender, but it's great for start in creating and sculpting characters in this software. Nicolay explains everything so cool and funny, so it's easy to follow him. Sometimes he jumps from one theme to another. I think it would be better to do the whole model and then start doing textures, fur and posing (for me texturing of the eyes in the middle of the course was a bit strange). Anyway, it was a great experience!

Overall I learned a lot from the course and really enjoyed it. The instructor is very engaging and funny. My only criticism is that some of the last videos were very chaotic (Mainly on the topic of rendering lighting). It was more him exploring and learning on camera with us than teaching me something he already knows. Still, I highly recommend the course as someone who have never used Blender until now.

Great lessons and great teacher! As a newcomer I've learned a loooot. To be honest I didn't have much time to learn so it took me about a month to complete this one So it a bit hard to remember what was in the very beginning. Would be great if NIkolay made a short 5 - 10 mins summary lesson of making the character (just steps one after another). Just to have big picture in the head how characters are done

Super Kurs! Immer straight to the point! Kein unnötiges Blabla. TOP! Ich kann diesen Kurs bisher uneingeschränkt empfehlen und freue mich auf den nächsten Part den ich gleich starte.
