Our take
Based on the ratings of 4,390 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
J Garg's BigQuery course is a compact 8.8 hours across 105 lectures, built around how BigQuery works rather than how to write SQL. The description says plainly that it won't teach SQL, and the requirements ask for the basics. The syllabus runs from datasets and tables through execution plans, partitioning, clustering, views and materialized views, then the bq command line and the Python client. Later sections cover pricing and best practices. It's pitched at data engineers and people eyeing the Google Cloud data engineer certification.
Reviewers like the short, clear lectures and the focus on performance and cost. One says the teacher explains every section down to the small details, and a finance-background student rated it five stars. The complaints are consistent. Several say the console has changed since recording, so screens and options no longer match, and one notes there is no mention of newer tools like Gemini. Others find the Beam and Airflow sections thin on practice, and one calls many lessons bullet-point reading that skims the internals the title promises.
The last update was June 2025, and recent reviews still flag old videos, so expect to translate some screens yourself. Two students say that pushed them into the docs, which isn't a bad habit. Most of the sample is happy, with only a small slice of low ratings. It's a sensible pick for the concepts and cost tuning, paired with Google's current documentation. Anyone who wants deep, exercise-heavy BigQuery work should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Short lectures, 8.8 hours in all, that reviewers call clear and to the point
- Partitioning, clustering, execution plans and pricing taught with speed and cost in mind
- Covers the console, the bq CLI and the Python client, with lecture datasets and queries attached
- Approachable beyond engineers, with a finance-background reviewer giving it five stars
Cons
- Console screens and some provided code are out of date, despite a June 2025 update
- Beam and Airflow sections lack practice, and some lessons are mostly bullet points
- Some exercises query today's data and may break when done on another day
Teacher had great knowledge in BigQuery and he explained all the sections with real minor details. I am happy with this course and gained good knowledge of BQ.
Listed for all levels, but basic SQL is required, and Cloud Shell and Python familiarity helps in the later sections.

It was a bit challenging because the UI had changed, but that also “forces” you to explore more on your own, which can be a positive learning experience. I had some difficulty with Section 15 because, in my opinion, the explanation was not very clear. However, someone already familiar with Cloud Shell and Python will likely find it easier to follow. Overall, it’s a solid course that could still be improved.

Excellent course! The concepts are explained clearly and effectively, making it easy to follow along. I really appreciated how the content is short, precise, and to the point, while still covering all the essential topics in depth. It perfectly matched what I was looking for. This course is highly suitable for both beginners as well as experienced professionals working with BigQuery. Truly well-structured and thoughtfully designed—great job!

Great course! I have learned a lot by doing this course and what I appreciate the most is the emphasize on performance and how BigQuery works behind the scenes, how it optimizes queries and how we can take advantage of its features to reduce costs and increase performance. As a suggestion, what I would have liked would have been a more in-depth presentation of Apache Beam and more example of how data pipelines are able to transform data. Thank you for the good content!

The content of the course itself is awesome for beginners in data analysis, but the fundamental knowledge about SQL will be needed. One disclaimer, the English used is strongly accented, so those who are used to American/British English will need some time to get used to it, although it won't be a big blocker. Thank you for an amazing learning opportunity!

I think this is the best BigQuery course on Udemy. The course is very deep, it dig hidden and advanced features in BigQuery. I think this is an advanced level course. If you have no any basic knowledge of SQL and database, you'll probably lost. It would be better if you learn SQL first before jump into this course.

Very good practical course with real life example. It it a very good starting point for people want to develop their skills in engineering on google cloud as it covers all essential aspects of data processing in google clouds i.e.: working with big query console, working from cli and python api, creating data flows with Apache Beam and scheduling them with Composer. I really liked the practical approach and best practices segments. Despite being created in 2020 the course is still actual.

This course is efficient for those who are started enhancing big query. here you will get granular knowledge on each and every topic. Way of explanation is super fast, so you have to be speed up understanding and grasp as much as possible :-) All the best..!

One of its first kinda detailed walkthru course on BQ available across the online learning platforms. It is a good deal of info to get started and the trainer has demoed everything in his own style than copying it from some examples in other documentations.
By Santosh Amba on 1/18/2021
As with all his previous courses, J Garg, kept the course simple and engaging, while covering almost all the aspects of the course. The course will give enough confidence to deal with real world problems for Data Engineers. Few things I would like to be added though , are - Publish the course presentations. Add Big Query ML capabilities
