Course Description

Once you have learned the basics in CAD drawing, you will have a skill that will last you a lifetime.

Here's what a recent student on the course, Cady Dodds, a carpenter designer/maker who runs Perfect Space Carpentry, had to say in an email to me:

"The course has been great for me, first step towards electronic drawing.

I  sat down this afternoon and drew up 2 elevations for a client, some  wardrobes and storage. Although basic I think quite acceptable and took  me about 2 hours or so, and after a bit of fettling I got them to print.  So I am very pleased."

This was Cady's first ever CAD drawing. The 2 hours it took him, will soon become an hour. The time savings CAD offers you have to be experienced to be believed. What's more, you can send your finished drawing to anyone, anywhere in the world, as a PDF file which they can open to view and print. Its an unbeatable technology.

Here are some of the things the course teaches you to do:

  • how to set up the CAD screen to draw more quickly and easily

  • how to use a few basic tools to maximum effect, and build even complex drawings using simple techniques

  • how to re-use existing drawings to create new ones, in a fraction of the time

  • how to dimension your finished drawings in minutes using powerful CAD tools

  • how to output your drawings as finished scale plans, either printed or as PDF files

Using a project based, step by step method I show you how to draw a complete set of elevations of an Apothecary's Chest.

A PDF version of the plans of the chest are provided to download for reference, and sequential versions of the relevant CAD files for you to work on as you progress through the course are also included. These files are prepared with a range of dimension scales to make it much easier to output your finished drawing, and can be re-used as templates in the future.

The course has 3 main sections

  • Customising the workspace, where you learn how to streamline the CAD screen and tools to get the most out of them

  • The project, where you learn through step by step video lectures, how to draw a complete set of woodworking plans

  • Dimensioning, scales and output, where you learn how to add dimensions to the finished plans and output the drawing to print or as a PDF file

Working as an illustrator and designer in architecture and publishing for more than 30 years has taught me a lot about different types of drawing software.

So how do you choose which programs to use?

I've done that for you in my courses.

Would you like to learn how to draw accurate woodworking plans quickly and easily using a great value professional CAD program? Well, take my CAD for Woodworkers course using DraftSight, a great professional level CAD program similar in commands and structure to AutoCAD.

Would you like to be able to design and draw your projects in 3D? I'm running a course now on Udemy, SketchUp for Woodworkers, for anyone (not just woodworkers) who wants to learn how to use SketchUp to draw smaller projects (ie not a house!)

See my Udemy courses ,SketchUp for Woodworkers  and its companion course, CAD for Woodworkers.

Helped me to understand and use the CAD functions better and more proficiently. Once I was able to understand how to use the stretch, create group, explode, and select tools and select individual items and move them as a group, I was able to make good progress. Learned some invaluable lessons of how to use cad tools and apply their use to future drawings Thanks for a great courses

I'd used Draftsight before but not for several years, I was looking for a refresher course, and this course fit my needs quite well. I'm using the free version, and my windows were in some cases different from the ones in the course, but that may have been because the presenter was using the professional version. I have no way of telling.

I took a Draftsight workshop a couple of years ago and then didn't do anything with it, so this was a great refresher course for me. Within the first hour of the course I was able to quickly start a simple project needed for work, and by the halfway mark I was able to complete it. I will definitely review this course again in detail to get a more complete understanding of how the program works. There was a bit of a learning curve due to the new interface, but once I figured out where everything had been moved I was able to follow along without much difficulty, and of course, you always have the option to use the command line if you can't find something. It's probably not feasible to completely redo the videos using the new interface, but the summary write-ups at the end of each section might be a good place to add some screenshots showing where to find the toolbars and customization windows in the new interface. The project was complex enough to showcase a number of tools and alternative approaches to the same design, but simple enough that I could follow along moderately well. I haven't been able to find many good instructional videos about Draftsight, so I was grateful to find 5+ hours of instruction to get me through my project. Thanks Simon!

Slightly above average, Allot of things are still took for granted by the presenter if someone has NO prior knowledge (making layers, how to define them, not to mention lots of setup options he has ready for the presentation are NOT shown how to setup by the beginner, etc)

As Draftsight has been updated, I needed to hunt for the commands on my system to accomplish the instructors instructions. I then found that the Ribbon style interface can be changed to the Classic menu interface by selecting the box at the upper right of the screen and selecting "Classic". That makes the tutorials go much easier. Although the course starts out a little dry for someone who has been using CAD for a while, it did help me greatly in switching to Draftsight.

The instructor does a good job of explaining what is going on, but the video doesn't show everything that is happening. Even though much of what isn't seen has been previously explained, it would be good if it was at least shown one more time. Moreover, the drafting tool the instructor has chosen has been upgraded. The mouse performs differently, and some of the tools have been relocated in the application. The version of draftSight the instructor is using doesn't have the ribbon, which affects the setup process at the beginning of the course. Lastly, there are parts of the course where the instructor goes a little too fast. when he says he "... simply ..." clicks on the mirror tool ... wait, what tool, rewind, watch, rewind, watch ... Ooooh! That's what he did! A really good lesson would be one where the instructor slows down enough for me to follow along with the lesson. My computer has two screens just for that purpose. On the plus side, the tool the instructor chose to teach the course is the best drafting tool I've played with so far. I'm learning how to use lines, rectangles, and arches to form even more complicated objects. Although this class is designed for woodworkers, I believe I could use the same tool for designing web pages as well. And, I can't wait to see the final product from this drawing.

Course is OK if you want to draw projects that are about the same size as the example the author uses. He gives you the files that will print his examples but doesn't explain how to print your own projects. No information is given on how to set up scales or views or plot windows that can be used later. Info that was given was good, but substantially lacking info that would make DraftSight usable for your own projects.

I love this course, it's exactly what I was looking for. As a hobbyst on electronics and robot building I always wanted to learn how to design my own enclosures or chassis for my projects. The approach taken in this course is excellent for my purposes on learning CAD drawing. It gives a simple but efficient workflow and just the required amount of information to get your drawings done. Thanks for this course.

I loved this course! For far to long I have stumbled around trying to figure out CAD programs. I knew the benefits of using CAD to produce accurate, quality plans for my woodworking projects. Now, after taking this course, I can take advantage of those benefits. Mr. Rodway does an excellent job of letting you know what you need to get a really good handle on producing quality CAD drawings.

The course was easy to follow and as someone familiar with reviewing drawings but not creating them. This was a very quick course to give a level to give the confidence to produce my own drawings with layers. Worth my time and money invested. I will be using this for presenting complex situations to lay persons by using levels to build the whole picture. Keep going I look forward to the next one.
