Practical coaching tools to help employees grow with clarity, confidence, and ownership.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 16,755 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short workplace coaching course for managers, not a life coaching certification. It runs about 75 minutes across 15 lectures in five sections, with one block on four conversational skills and another on four action skills. The syllabus centers on the GROW model, asking better questions, listening before solving, and knowing when someone needs direction instead of coaching. Deborah Grayson Riegel, an executive coach who teaches at Wharton and Duke, leads it. Nothing is required going in, so it suits new supervisors and team leads best.

Reviewers like that it is to the point and clearly explained. A supervisor two and a half years into the role called it insightful, and others say they picked up tools they can use at work and at home. The AI role play is the most talked about part. One student preferred it to a standard quiz because the feedback meant more. Others found it frustrating: it is mandatory, the voice call option failed for one person, and a non-native English speaker said the AI cut them off. One reviewer also says the slides move too fast.

About 90 percent of the 16,755 ratings are four or five stars, and the content was last updated in May 2025. In the Life Coaching category it sits beside certification programs, while this one is aimed at managers rather than future coaches. It is a good first step for a manager who wants a usable framework in an afternoon. If you want depth, more scenarios, or a credential, plan on a second course.

Best forNew or mid-level managers who want a quick, practical intro to coaching their team, not a life coach credential.
Skip it ifYou want a coaching certification to practice professionally, or you would rather not talk to an AI.

Pros

  • Short at about 75 minutes, so a busy manager can finish it in one sitting
  • Teaches the GROW model plus how to tell when coaching is not the right move
  • AI role play gives hands-on practice, and one reviewer preferred it to a quiz
  • Reviewers call it to the point and say the tools apply at work and at home

Cons

  • The AI role play is mandatory, and reviewers report audio failures and the AI cutting them off
  • Slides can vanish quickly and the video pace is fixed even if you have read the transcript
  • Role play covers one leader-to-leader scenario, and one reviewer wanted new hires or low performers
I liked the Ai role play. It was much preferred to a standard quiz and provided more meaningful feedback.

Course Description

Great managers don’t just direct work — they help people grow.

Coaching is one of the most powerful tools a leader can use to strengthen performance, build confidence, encourage employee development, and help people take greater ownership of their work. Yet many managers have never been taught how to coach effectively.

This course teaches practical coaching skills for managers, leaders, and professionals. You’ll learn when coaching is the right approach — and when someone actually needs clear direction, feedback, training, or another kind of support.

You’ll discover how to ask thoughtful coaching questions, listen before jumping to solutions, and use the GROW coaching model to help people clarify goals, examine their current situation, explore options, and commit to action. Instead of always providing the answer, you’ll learn how to help employees strengthen their own problem-solving skills and professional judgment.

You’ll also learn how to coach without micromanaging. Strong coaching does not create dependence on the manager; it builds capability in the employee.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to:
• Recognize when to coach and when not to
• Use the GROW coaching model
• Ask questions that encourage reflection and insight
• Listen more intentionally before offering solutions
• Help employees identify their own options and next steps
• Encourage ownership and accountability
• Balance guidance with autonomy
• Coach employees through challenges
• Explore underlying causes of performance issues
• Support high performers who want to grow
• Have more meaningful development conversations
• Help employees build confidence and judgment
• Establish follow-up without micromanaging

You’ll also learn to avoid common coaching mistakes, such as giving advice too quickly, asking leading questions, rescuing employees from discomfort, assuming a struggling employee lacks motivation, or coaching when clearer direction is actually needed.

Whether you are a new manager, experienced leader, team lead, or professional responsible for developing others, this course will give you repeatable coaching tools you can use in everyday workplace conversations.

By the end of the course, you’ll be better equipped to help people think, solve problems, take ownership, and grow.

Great managers don’t just solve today’s problems. They help people build the skills, confidence, and judgment to solve tomorrow’s problems themselves.

Slides sometimes are taken off very quickly even before one can record them and read thru. Had to rewind, pause to read them. Better video itself has few seconds pause allowing for the read.

“Amazing, Above Expectations” because it demonstrated several strong coaching behaviors and met all of the stated goals effectively:

Really insightful. The possibility to download the summary of each topic is welcome. It offers the possibility to review the good practices

The content was clear, easily explained, totally helpful. I think there are some technical issues regarding the role plays, but the exercise is excellent to practice for a real conversation.
