Course Description

Conflict is an inevitable part of working life. And it's not always bad.

But, often, it is. It can be stressful, harm productivity, spoil working relationships, and lead to damaging behaviors.

And, if you have any level of responsibility as a team leader, supervisor, or manager, fixing it may well be down to you.

As a manager or a leader, conflict management is a part of your job!

So you need the tools to deal with conflict at work.
And this course will give you them.

More than that, you'll learn how and why conflict arises, and how to minimize it before it takes hold.

Here are the main conflict management topics you'll cover:

  • The sources of conflict

  • How to listen

  • The effect of personalities on conflict

  • The ways people resist imposed ideas

  • The signs and stages of conflict escalation

  • The steps for de-escalating conflict

  • Strategies for resolving conflict

  • Five ways to handle conflict

  • How to recover a broken (workplace) relationship

Ongoing Project: Your Conflict Log
During the course, your project will be to keep and share aspects of your Conflict Log. You will create a record of your observations, successes, and struggles. Other students and your tutor will support you, endorse your successes, and help you with your questions.

Prior Experience
The only prior experience you need is daily life. If you’ve been a hermit or in long-term peaceful coexistence with all your fellow human beings, you won’t need this course.

However, the people who may find this most valuable are those who experience conflict in the workplace, and especially those in supervisory or management roles.

Your Tutor
Your tutor is Dr. Mike Clayton. As a senior manager at international consulting firm, Deloitte, Mike had to deal with conflict among staff, and with clients, and even among clients. But more important, as a senior representative of his firm and a program leader, he needed to avoid escalation of conflict.

Now, as a trainer and facilitator, he has been applying what he learned and teaching it to others. This course represents 15 years' experience of what tools students find most helpful, and 25 years experience in business, managing conflicts large and small.

We have you covered
However, it's not all been plain sailing. Three times in 25 years, Mike has had to use his own 'Breakdown Routine' to the breakdown of a professional relationship. Three times it worked. And managers and leaders he has coached have used it with equal success.

So, you see, we have you covered. This course will give you the tools to:

  • Prevent conflict

  • Reduce and reverse its escalation

  • Handle full blown conflict

  • and... recover from the effects of a conflict-induced relationship breakdown.

Since I got transferred to a new government agency earlier this year, I’ve encountered several internal conflicts, particularly between members of my staff. These issues range from misunderstandings and communication gaps to clashes in working styles and differing expectations about accountability. As a new leader in the division, I quickly realized that while technical skills are important, managing interpersonal dynamics and fostering a respectful, collaborative environment are just as critical to our success. At times, it has been challenging to intervene without escalating the situation, especially when emotions are involved or when long-standing tensions come to the surface. Taking this course has given me practical tools to better handle these situations. I learned how to identify the early signs of conflict and understand how it builds up, often silently, before it becomes disruptive. I appreciated the structured approaches offered—like de-escalation techniques, listening strategies, and frameworks for resolution, which I can now apply to real situations in my team. Most importantly, the course helped me reflect on my responsibility as a manager to not only resolve conflicts, but to set the tone for open communication and psychological safety. It came at a perfect time and has equipped me with renewed confidence to handle difficult conversations with empathy and fairness.

It equipped me with practical conflict resolution techniques, including how to identify conflict triggers, manage difficult conversations, and de-escalate tense situations. His structured frameworks and real-world examples helped me approach workplace conflicts more strategically—turning challenges into opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and team cohesion.

The program or this course is very nice and time allowing I will go over it again and again. It is presented articulately and provides very good tips at conflict resolution. There is an Issue with the lecture hours. Much as the teaching is an hour and a half, the learning takes so much longer; the exercises take a long time (perhaps 8 hours). This is important for us who besides the learning also want to earn PDUs. My suggestion is that the course is much longer than one and a half hour and should be scaled as such.

By Zoe Mornhinweg on 6/23/2023

I had little expectations when starting this course; what expectations I might have had, were centered around personal/family and friend relationships. As noted in the lecture, work/professional relationships are different and need to be handled and respected in there own way. I learned to see this from a fresh perspective and will actually attempt to use the 10 repair steps (method) here in the near future. Not only did I learn how to resolve repairs, I learned how to break down my own short comings, I can now manage my faults and possibly improve my own communication to help lessen conflicts. Shall a conflict arise, I won't be eager to avoid it, but rather learn why it started and how to resolve it in the best way for everyone, and maybe even strengthen work place relationships. Thank you!!

This class was very informative with the information, and I really enjoyed the conflict log. I really enjoyed looking at and listening to the Social Syles model of personalities within the workplace, family, etc. I saw myself an analytical person but I also placed my team within this chart as well... very interesting topic and I like the tips on how to mend a broken work relationship. I find those are extremely hard to do just because it's emotional at that point of it being broken. We can't take back the words that was expressed in anger so how can you rebuild the broken-ness of a working relationship. I like the steps that you mentioned but in my mind and experience it cannot be done. Very informative information and material which gave me a lot to think about as I progress in my career.

I find the music between each lesson annoying. Does it have to be between each lesson? Would have been better without music. The downloadable PDFs in the course cannot be typed in. Several courses I have taken here on Udemy have PDFs that can be typed in. Today, many people work remotely and do not have access to a printer + to print and write by hand, which century we live in? Some silly content in the course that I think is nonsense.

I am grateful for all the strategies, tools, and models shared in this course. Conflict at work was one of my biggest fear that I wish will never happen, which is definitely impossible. However, after learning the topics, I am now confident that if ever conflict comes along my workplace. I can say I can confidently manage it. This is indeed a helpful course.

It is good and meets expectations

For mobile, you can listen, but the exercises require a printed document. In my opinion, the course seems a bit abstract and obvious.
