Course Description

Welcome to the advanced course on how to setup a deployment automation that's capable of scaling to handle millions of users!

In this course you will learn some of the most in-demand skills in the marketplace today by creating automated workflows to deploy and manage a scalable and secure infrastructure.

The demand for DevOps engineers is skyrocketing because few people have these skills and the value they add to a business’s bottom line is so high. Software development is expensive, and DevOps saves money by automating and streamlining the process. It also makes it easier to deploy more frequently, so you can catch issues early and improve the reliability of your product or service. Not to mention it saves hundreds of hours of manually administering servers and running deployments (like the good old days).

People in DevOps roles are some of the highest earners in the industry, are looking for work the least, and are the most sought after by companies. (Source: Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2019 and Indeed).

Needless to say, mastering the technologies and skills used for DevOps is a great return on investment.

Whether you’re a developer, system administrator, or tech entrepreneur - this course will give you the tools to advance your skills in some of the most in-demand DevOps technologies in the marketplace today.

In this course, you’ll be deploying a sample Django REST API to AWS using Terraform, GitLab, Docker and a suite of AWS technologies, including:

  • Elastic Container Registry (ECR)

  • Relational Database Service (RDS)

  • Elastic Container Service (ECS)

  • Application Load Balancer (ALB)

  • Elastic File System (EFS)

  • Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

  • Subnets

  • Gateways

  • Endpoints

  • Simple Storage Service (S3)

  • Route53

  • Identity and Access Management (IAM)

  • AWS Certificate Manager (ACM)

This course was designed to deploy a Django application, but it will work for any web application that runs in Docker.

In this course, you will learn how to:

  • Define your infrastructure as code so you can easily create and destroy environments as you need them, keeping AWS costs low

  • Design an architecture that is scalable, secure, resilient and facilitates zero downtime deployments

  • Setup professional development workflows based on GitLab Flow to automate processes and speed up deployments

  • Properly manage and administer an AWS account in accordance with best practices to mitigate the risk of it getting compromised (and preventing AWS bill shock)

By the end of the course you will have implemented a fully functioning deployment process, comparable to what you might find at any major tech company.

This is an advanced course that requires previous experience with Django and Docker, and familiarity with AWS. It requires you to have a budget for AWS fees and an acceptable payment method. You must also have a computer that can run Docker desktop (sorry Windows Home users).

This is a high-stakes course, so we encourage you to check out our full Requirements video before enrolling. This video and many others are free to preview, so make sure you check them out to make sure this course is right for you.

This is a hands-on course, with a bit of theory and lots of opportunities to test your knowledge. The content is challenging but rewarding. Ready for it? Let’s dive in!

Mark Winterbottom

Hey, I’m Mark! I’m an award-winning full-stack software engineer with a passion for learning and teaching new technologies.

This passion started at 12-years-old when I taught myself how to make Windows batch scripts.  Little did I know that hacking around on my computer back then would turn into a life-long passion for programming.

I went on to complete a degree in Computer Systems Networking at Nottingham Trent University, and worked in various developer roles at multinational corporations and startups.

I always believed that the final step to learning is teaching. And so I started a software development blog and consultancy firm called London App Developer.  My work has been featured in the Daily Mail, Mashable, TechCrunch, the Huffington Post, the Mirror and Gizmodo, and over 30,000 developers read my programming tutorials every month.

My goal for teaching on Udemy is to help developers make a better living through their code. Whether that’s by building new systems and tools to make the world a better place, or just to make their lives easier. If I can help them to increase their earning power, so they can better support their communities and loved ones, then even better. :)

My specialities are Python, Django, JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3, but because I’m full-stack, I can work my way around most programming languages and frameworks.

I live in London, England with my wife and business partner, Brooke.

This is the WORST course I have ever taken on Udmy, dude is just about selling his other Django api course and can't shut up about it throughout the entire series. My expectation was, go through a normal setup even in pictures of a traditional setup, then switch to an IAC setup explaining how things fit together, but this was just about copy and pasting code from different sources and then he can't shut up about his other course he keeps emphasizing on taking. This is just a marketing video

This course needs updating. the Dynamodb_table is deprecated. Terraform can now lock the state directly inside the S3 bucket using a lockfile. Overall the instructor was clear and can teach well which helped me understand the concepts.

I had never done any DevOps work before. I bought this course to learn how to deploy my own application on AWS. Although I didn’t use the provided Django source code (as recommended by Mark), I had no problems building my own Terraform setup with custom features and resources. What I really appreciate about this course is that Mark goes through every single resource, every single line, and every single detail — explaining everything in a clear, human, and easy-to-understand way. Applause to Mark! Thanks to this course, I now have my own AWS infrastructure built and running — powering my applications, connecting to the world, and providing real services.

This DevOps course has truly made a significant impact on my career. It offered a well-structured curriculum, a knowledgeable instructor, and practical learning experiences that have enhanced my skills and confidence in DevOps practices. If you're considering a DevOps course, I highly recommend this one for its valuable content and practical approach. Mark is great (the rest API course is also awesome).

Great tutorial for learning how to automate AWS resources through Terraform. Having an understanding of docker, linux commands, AWS basics like manually hosting a web app on an ec2 instance, creating a domain name etc will make the learning easier. Finally, understanding how to run a simple django web app is also nice to know but not necessary. If you know how to run web apps in other environments like Laravel etc then you should be good. Also, the Q&A section was helpful for some errors one may encounter along the way.

It is a great tutorial! Mark explained complicated stuff in a way that is easy to understand. His knowledge and pronunciation helped me easily understand Terraform and the deployment process. To be ideal for my needs it would have to replace Fargate with regular EC2 instances. Why? I use them in the company I work for :-). SUGGESTIONS 1. What I would like to see more are those arrows with code explanations that popped up several times in the videos. They are very useful and, based on them, it's easy to make notes as comments in the code. 2. I would really enjoy watching Kubernetes tutorial. TO SUM UP I really enjoyed this tutorial and it was my main entertainment after a full day of work. It was addictive, like a very absorbing series on Netflix.

This course is suitable for someone who are looking for tutorial of full pipeline deployment from SCM to Production environment. After this course you will have the fundamental of an CI/CD cycle (Gitlab CI in this case) and can easily adapt to other CI/CD tools such as AWS CodePipeline (like i do) What this course will not suitable for (or at least for beginner): - Learning Django framework - Learning AWS Services - Python - Terraform - Docker i have a fundamental of everything above, and i come to this course to intergate everthing togetther, and it was a great learning. Thank you!

In general the course is good and it's pretty cool it was possible to keep it running till the end. Well almost in my case, but that's not a big deal. Some places, where it's just a copy/paste, I wish there was more explanation, but I also understand that it might be difficult to put everything into one training.

Update 3 years later: Still 5 stars! Mark just updated the course. It's a massive update that no-doubt took considerable time. Mark is exceptionally great at teaching this complicated subject. I consider myself technically advanced and even I felt like I was drowning at certain parts of this course. Learning something new really requires patience, curiosity and sheer determination to not give up. Be a problem-solver. If you feel overwhelmed, stop, ask the right questions, research it, draw it out, put it in your own terms, and even try to recreate the infrastructure in the AWS interface to make more sense out of the Terraform code. Simply an amazing course.
