Created by: Eric Roby

Last updated May 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 13,720 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Eric Roby's course is a project-based walk through FastAPI for people who already know a little Python. It runs 21.5 hours over 241 lectures. The first four hours or so are a Python refresher, then come numbered projects covering request methods, a database, authentication with JWT, Alembic migrations, pytest testing, and a full stack app. Git and a short deployment section come near the end. About 97,700 students have enrolled, and the last update was in May 2026.

Most of the 13,720 ratings are 4 or 5 stars, and the praise is consistent. Reviewers like the calm, step by step pace, the live coding, and the fact that the course goes past the basics into testing, Git and deployment. Beginners say they came out confident. The complaints are just as consistent, though. Several low ratings say the teaching often reads out the code being typed without explaining why it is there. One reviewer found the testing section rushed, and two were let down by the full stack app, one because the HTML and JavaScript were pasted in with little explanation.

Age is the other issue. One reviewer says parts still date from 2021, and another calls the cloud database deployment obsolete. About three hours of older, deprecated full stack material is also still in the course. Taken as a whole, it is a good pick for a Python beginner who wants to see a whole API built and shipped, and who is happy to look things up when an explanation is thin. Developers wanting advanced API design should look elsewhere.

Best forBeginners with basic Python who want to build, test and deploy a FastAPI app in one course.
Skip it ifYou want advanced API design or a deep explanation of why each line of code is written.

Pros

  • Calm, step by step live coding that beginners say they can follow
  • Covers JWT auth, Alembic migrations, pytest testing, Git and deployment, not just routes
  • A run of numbered projects, so something gets built at every stage
  • Refreshed in May 2026, with a very large student base and a 4.5 rating

Cons

  • Instructor often reads code aloud without explaining why, say several low reviews
  • Full stack app disappoints some reviewers, with HTML and JS unexplained; one found testing rushed
  • Some material dates from 2021, and the cloud database steps are called obsolete
Instructions are clear to follow. Course break down helped to understand each topic deeply.

Labeled All Levels, but it suits people with basic Python syntax, not true newcomers to code.

New to python but as a seasoned Java dev. I took basic python learning and jump straight to this course. 1. Very methodical and step by step increasing the depth 2. Core concepts are well defined 3. Course material and lecutres are so engaging and coding live as we go is the best part!! 4. Finally, communication, presentation, content cannot be sweeter!! I learned FastAPI as a novice at the start of this course but now I am confident of using it elsewhere..

Hi there, only 3.5 stars because even though Cody did a good job in updating the course along the way, the course is not from 2026 but 2021 instead! Updated in 2022, 2023 as we can see in the docs in further sections. And Cody reviewed and adjusted a bunch of videos but not all of them, first flaw. And secondly, there's another major issue to me, like so many students, I was looking forward to the "full-stack application" to get the juicy part! And I know the course is already 21 hours long so Cody might have thought it would be too much of a duration but this app is quite disappointing, no Bootstrap explanation, no HTML explanation, even worse, no JS explanation (for a full-stack app, it's mandatory to me!), the reason from Cody: "it's a course about FastAPI, not JS nor CSS" I concur and again, he might have thought 30 hours would be too long a course, but if that's so, why 1 hour+ on GIT? it's not a course about GIT either. And as far as I am concerned, JS is closer to a full-stack application thant GIT. So in a word, a good course but from 2021 watch out! and you'll get no explanation whatsoever in CSS, JS, a tad on Jinja but not much either. Too bad 'cause the rest of the course is pretty good, I must say, Cody's a great instructor, no question, but the full-stack app is a real disappointment, too few explanations while coding along, hence 3.5 stars only.

it's just waoooo content ...firstly i thought ...it wouldn't be that much good ..since i m using the platform for the first time ...but gradually ..i learnt everything and whats special is that ..it doesn't make uh feel overload

This course is exactly what I wanted to learn about FastAPI. One feedback is that I think it would be better if instructor could have explained how authentication and authorization workflow was set up in the code. I felt that authentication and authorization coding was a little rushed out. Also, Dependency injection is something which might be new to people like me. So a couple of slides on how dependency injection works in the background as well as a little more time on async/await understanding would have been good. But, overall the course was very good.

By Paul Aldana on 8/6/2026

Overall, a good course for people who have prior development experience. I can see how a lot of very new devs can get lost in the course as some sections from 0 to 100 really quick and there's not much explanations on why they are used instead of another method, or why a particular Python package is used. Would be nice to have a few minutes explaining what the packages do to make things clearer. Some sections are outdated and needs to be redone, like the ElephantSQL section. I was able to make it work using Render's PostgreSQL, though. Also, I believe it's critical to add how to properly secure the SECRET_KEY and how it shouldn't be deployed to production environment. A section or two on how to properly set this up using .env files or other methods to properly run the code in production is very important once we deploy things in the real world. Other than those, thank you for this course! I learned a lot and keep it up, Eric!

By Èric Seró on 8/5/2026

This is a great introduction to FastAPI. Eric explains the core concepts clearly, and I learned a lot throughout the course. My main suggestion would be to include a JavaScript basics module, similar to the Python basics section. I was able to follow the full-stack part because I already had some JavaScript experience, but I think beginners without that background could struggle. I also felt that some sections, especially the full-stack part, moved a bit too fast and relied on Python libraries without really explaining what they do. I like understanding things in depth, so I would have appreciated a bit more explanation there. Finally, some parts of the code are outdated. Whenever I ran into those issues, I had to rely on the Q&A section or AI tools to figure out the solution. It would be great to update those sections to match the latest versions of the libraries. Overall, I really enjoyed the course and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get started with FastAPI.

Originally I tried Navin Reddy's "FastAPI for Beginners" here on Udemy but sadly, I wasn't impressed and it felt like it was more of an afterthought than a well-thought-out course for beginners. I got Eric Roby's course and and it's definitely much better! YES, it's not as short as some others, but it's pretty thorough as you learn a handful of very useful things: - FastAPI backend basics, FastAPI with databases: SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL. - Testing your FastAPI endpoints/routes through Pytest (it sounds a bit intimidating, but really it's not once you learn how ). - Getting a real full stack project working with real HTML & CSS via Jinja for the front end, and FastAPI + your database for the backend. - Deploying your development environment project to a real-world hosting solution (Render, similar to Heroku) and not a "dashboard" front end like Streamlit etc. The example code provided helped me troubleshoot (usually minor) errors I ran into while following along. The Python refresher section was helpful , too, for avoiding silly mistakes. Videos are typically pretty short (under 10 mins. each) and the course is broken into logical sections. Overall, I'm very happy with it and I look forward to using this new skillset to move into web devlopment and data science. A few relatively minor things were outdated so I hope that's corrected, but information was provided by Eric or user comments, so I was fine when I ran into minor headaches. Thanks!

By Ali Kasim on 6/5/2026

Initially, the instructor's style felt a bit disorganized with some unnecessary filler and mid-video code changes. However, as I progressed further, I found my understanding vastly improving. You just need to stay highly focused, as every single detail he mentions is important. Once you adapt to his teaching style, the concepts connect beautifully. It requires a bit of patience and full attention at first, but it is definitely worth pushing through!

By Mher Mangasaryan on 5/15/2026

This course is great. For someone with programming experience in other languages, it was clear, efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you! I just wish there were more quizzes and assessments to reinforce the learning experience.

By Pablo Sancho-Sopranis Sampol on 5/12/2026

This course is an outstanding example of how to structure technical content in an effective and rigorous way. Eric Roby demonstrates a highly thoughtful teaching approach: the examples are carefully chosen and built up progressively, at a pace that makes the course very comfortable to follow while ensuring genuine knowledge acquisition and consolidation. What I particularly appreciate is that the complexity increases naturally until it closely resembles a real production environment — something many courses simply fail to achieve. The course coverage is both broad and thorough. Throughout the course, you work through FastAPI fundamentals, authentication and authorization, building production-ready applications, developing a full-stack application, and finally deploying your FastAPI app. A comprehensive journey that covers the complete development lifecycle. Highly recommended for anyone new to FastAPI as well as for developers looking to build a solid, professionally oriented foundation in the framework.
