Course Description
Welcome to Freelance Writing 101, a step-by-step beginner's guide to building a successful freelance writing business from scratch.
How often have you thought about becoming a freelance writer but just had no idea where to start?
You would love to work on your own terms, do something you genuinely enjoy, and build a business that supports you and your family.
But whenever you go to take the first step, you just don't know where to begin.
That's where so many aspiring writers find themselves. But that cycle ends today.
In this course, you'll learn exactly what it takes to build a successful freelance writing business.
In my career, I've found myself on both sides of the freelance writing table: I've made a living as a freelance writer, reaching millions of people with my work—but more recently, I've worked as a publisher who hires freelance writers. In this course, I use that experience to lay out a step-by-step roadmap that you can follow to start your business and get your first paid writing gig as soon as possible.
Here are some of the things we'll cover:
The mindset of a successful freelance writer: how to stay motivated and overcome fear and uncertainty
How much money you can make as a freelance writer
How to uncover your passions and find a freelance writing niche that is both profitable and interesting
How to break out of the "experience loop" and build a portfolio that will get you hired—even if you've never had a paid writing job in your life
Where to find paid writing gigs
How to craft an effective pitch that will help you stand out and get responses (template included!)
How to improve your writing and become a more valuable asset to your clients
How to be more productive and efficient as a freelance writer
How to handle client feedback in a way that's positive, healthy, and constructive
By the time we're finished, you'll be well on your way to building a successful freelance writing business.
I'm confident that you'll love this course, and my confidence is backed by Udemy's 30-day money-back guarantee: if you're not satisfied for any reason, you get a full refund—no questions asked.
I hope to see you inside!

The content is great but the video keeps stopping and starting and it is very frustrating to have to wait for it to start again.

This is a helpful foundational course that provides a broad overview for breaking into freelance writing work. The instructor shares some resources, links, and tips that help situate anyone as they begin their freelance writing journey. There are some exercises that help apply some of the lessons, but the vast majority of this course is lecture-based without any definitive assignments or application to help further cement the lessons shared. Overall, it's a great start, but it could include more definitive, step-by-step application-oriented lessons beyond writing a headline and selling/sharing a pitch. Perhaps a brief assignment about developing a headline into a story and an analysis of approximate word counts for an average article would help make this course stronger.

I've taken a number of courses and this one was one of the best. It provided me a starting point, supplied references, and examples where appropriate to clarify and clear up potential questions.

The most important dilemma that was resolved by this course was the "Experience Loop". Instructor used an effective visual tool without needing to use a face cam (as it is more important to teach instead of show one's face). Course isn't specialized in one avenue and applies for all types of writers, which is good as an introductory course. Suggestion: Since blogging was touched on, add in the average costs or a cost range of putting up a website across various domains, leave out how to make a good website unless you want to recommend a different course.

If Brad Merrill is the instructior of a course, you have to take that course. I love his style, his work, he is so professional. This course is not an exception neither. I highly recommend it to everyone who is interested in freelance writing.

This is a very good class. Believe me, I have taken many of them. I am interested in freelancing and have been for a while. I am planning on building a business and this helps in things I will be able to offer. This class gives specifics to becoming a freelance writer. Thank you!

This was a great starting point for learning about freelance writing, but before I dive in headfirst I'd like to get more information about a few areas (like finding a niche and building a portfolio).
By Carlos Noronha on 2/4/2020
Yes!, I find the course was very useful as it touched on many of the most relevant points and was delivered in a pleasant, crystal clear style. What I had hoped for is some kind of exercises and tutor feedback but perhaps I need to search specifically for that sort of course. I would welcome any recommendations.

This course offered real solid advice on how to make a successful writing career. It has lots of really helpful stuff to start or even take an existing career to the next level. Definitely recommend this course for all writers out there!

This course is an excellent intro to freelance writing, especially if you're just starting out. Brad keeps everything succinct while still walking you through all the important steps. I especially appreciated the included pitch templates and will be adapting them to use myself.
