Master GarageBand on iPad and iPhone: Create Music with Pro Techniques in This Complete Beginner’s Course in GarageBand

Our take
Based on the ratings of 314 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Martin Raay, a working music producer based in Stockholm, built this as a quick primer on GarageBand for iPad and iPhone rather than a full production course. Across 5 sections and 20 lectures (1.9 hours total, updated May 2026), it covers the app's interface, Apple Loops, building a track from scratch, and exporting to MP3. It's aimed at total beginners and hobbyists who want to start making music on a phone or tablet without buying software, since GarageBand itself is free.
Reviewers like how much ground it covers for a short course. One student said they finally understood flex mode and automation after avoiding those features for years, and several beginners said it made GarageBand's huge toolset feel approachable fast. The complaints cluster around visibility and depth: multiple reviewers say Raay refers to buttons and icons without clearly showing what he's clicking, one called the pace too fast to retain, and a rock musician wanted more on recording real guitar and bass rather than built-in instruments. More than one review also flagged that getting the extra sample packs pushes students toward the instructor's own paid platform.
Given the length, this works best as a fast on-ramp, not a deep dive. Mixing and mastering get light treatment, per a 5-star reviewer who wished those sections went further, and there's no coverage of recording live instruments through plug-ins. If the goal is to open GarageBand on an iPad and know your way around within two hours, the reviews say it delivers that. Anyone wanting a serious production workflow or real-instrument recording should look for a longer, more technical course.
Pros
- Covers GarageBand's whole iOS interface, loops, and MP3 export in under 2 hours
- Reviewers say it demystifies features like flex mode and automation they'd been avoiding
- Recently updated (May 2026), so the screens match the current iOS app
- Instructor is a working producer, and several beginners say it built their confidence fast
Cons
- Multiple reviewers can't tell what the instructor is tapping on screen
- Only 1.9 hours, so mixing, mastering, and live-instrument recording get thin coverage
- Some reviews flag lectures nudging students toward the instructor's own paid sample site
Listed as All Levels, but reviews show it suits total beginners best; experienced producers may find it thin.

I was really disappointed to find out that in order to get the samples he mentions in his video. You have to sign up for a paid account on his platform with one week free. Also, I can’t tell what he’s pressing to get the different features. Windows just seem to pop up.

I never thought GarageBand on iPad could be this powerful for music production! This course walks you through every feature and teaches you how to maximize your workflow. From creating beats to recording vocals, I’ve learned everything I need to make music on the go. The lessons are easy to follow, and the examples are super helpful. If you’re looking to produce music on your iPad, this is the course to take. I feel confident in my ability to create full tracks now, thanks to this course!

The GarageBand course is well-structured and informative. However, I felt that some of the lessons could have gone deeper, particularly in the areas of mixing and mastering. Despite this, it's a good resource for those new to the software.

Instructor gives a very good overview of and introductions to the myriad instruments, sounds, settings, and effects that GarageBand for iPad has to offer, which is not an easy task, as the program is huge. The course definitely shows just how much you can do with this music program and it's many capabilities. Could do a better job of indicating where instructor is clicking. Some technical problems; for example, sometimes a few words are repeated in parts of each lesson and section parts break at odd places. Overall, I learned a lot in short period of time, and now I know how to get around GB for iPad and experiment on my own--which was my objective.

Yes its above my expectations! I can finally use Garageband on my iPad which i never used before. Ive always used it on my Mac but i didnt know that i could use it on my iPad as well. So thank you for the great explanation in a way that made sense to me.

It was a good course for someone new to Ipad and Garageband. Thank you. Only two drawbacks I will say is as its touch screen, its not always easy to see where your touching. You often say, 'You can do this by clicking here', and I'm like WHERE and had to pause and try and work out where you meant. Its not like a PC where there is a mouse to see where you are. Sort that out and perfect! Also would've been cool to see you make a track not from loops but scratch.
By Lalfakzuala Renthlei on 7/27/2019
The presentation is good, easy to listen and follow. But, is it me or... Itsjust a garageband ios run through. Maybe i expected too much! The song making part was just arranging loops (again, maybe i expected too much). At times its difficult to know which part of the interface he refers to ...but a little tinkering usually helps me to find which button he's talking about.

It's a good course for learning the on-board instruments, but I come from a rock band background was looking for more on recording real instruments (Guitar + Bass) and using plug-ins for Amps and Effects. Also could do more on Fade and Merge tracks and use of the acoustic drum kits.

This Course is pretty intresting and very understandable, though is a basic course, it makes you see that GarageBand is a very good app, and has so much potencial, i think Martin (the instructor) should do more courses o this GarageBand on Ipad but focusing in an Intermediate or Advance course, because i think he has good experience on this and people can learn a lot too.
By Ruyah Mansour on 6/7/2018
Direct to point in this course. I wanted to see what the instructor pressed on and since it's screen recorded that can be a bit hard to see. Still an amazing course and gets you very easy into the software. Well done!
