Getting Started with Google Analytics (Udemy.com)

Learn how to interpret data and get insights from Google Analytics to increase Conversion Rates.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,276 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, three-hour introduction to Google Analytics from Eugen Oprea, published in 2012 and never refreshed since. It walks through installing the tracking code, reading the main reports, and setting up goals, segments and dashboards so that raw traffic numbers turn into something a site owner can act on. The audience is people who have never opened Analytics. Anyone who has already poked around the interface will find little new here, and several reviewers say exactly that.

Students who liked it praise the goals, segments and dashboard lessons, and say the instructor clearly knows the platform. The complaints are loud and consistent, though. Only the first two sections are real screen recordings, about 80 minutes in total. Section three is audio copies of the same lessons and section four is articles, which reviewers call pointless duplication that pads the length. The interface has changed a lot since the recording, so buttons and report names no longer match what is on screen. One reviewer also notes there is no practice site, so people without their own website end up learning purely in theory.

The price is the main argument for it: it costs nothing, and the 4.1 rating across 1,276 reviews shows most people felt they got something out of a few hours. But the course predates Google Analytics 4 entirely, so treat it as a quick primer on the ideas behind goals and segments, not a guide to the current product. The more recent courses it sits beside are the better use of your time if you actually need to work in Analytics today.

Best forComplete beginners who want a free, one-evening look at what goals, segments and dashboards do before committing to a GA4 course.
Skip it ifYou need to work in Google Analytics 4 today, or you already know your way around the reports.

Pros

  • Free, and short enough to finish in an evening: the real video content runs about 80 minutes.
  • Goals, segments and dashboard lessons get repeated praise, even from people with some GA experience.
  • Reviewers say the instructor knows the platform well and explains how to turn reports into actions.
  • Rated 4.1 by 1,276 students, with roughly 89,000 enrolled since 2012.

Cons

  • Recorded in 2012 and never updated, so the interface shown no longer matches Google Analytics, let alone GA4.
  • Sections three and four are audio copies and articles of the same lessons, which reviewers call confusing padding.
  • No practice site or exercises, so people without their own website learn only in theory.
The course is indeed outdated, but, still worth it. I recommend for beginners.

Content of course is quite good but to be completely honest I don't understand why do you have audio versions of the lessons which you have with video in section 2? What is the point? Video plays really important part because person can see what are you doing and how are you doing it. I think uploading audio versions of the same lessons is totally useless

Areas where more clarity is required: 1. How to use google analytics when a plugin is used? For example; providing a reference like " https://www.cloudways.com/blog/add-google-analytics-to-wordpress/ " if video is not possible. A small overview / Info about " MonsterInsights" which automates most of tasks. 2. How to create a cookie page?

Подходит только для начинающих. Всё просто, понятно. В краткие сроки можно понять интерфейс Google Аналитики и как получить самые нужные данные в отчетах. Большое спасибо автору!

If you are a beginner, you can have a hint of Analytics with this course in a few hours. My suggestion, don't spend too much time on it. But, certainly worth it. I feel 100% prepared to study a more advanced and detailed course now, and more than that, I am familiar with the Google Analytics platform now too. Which is a win situation. The course is indeed outdated, but, still worth it. I recommend for beginners.

Very helpful. Instruction is clear. The only problem is lack of continue follow-up on examples. For instance, after goals were set for the gardener website, what happened? no follow-up about the goals for the gardener website.

A great introduction to Google Analytics and what it all means with regards to website traffic and where that traffic is coming from exactly. Once you have this data you can easily improve your website traffic by applying certain changes to your website content etc. There is more to learn with analytics but this course is a good starting point.

Thanks Eugen for this GA course, it has been really useful for me to understand basics of this fascinating world. Anyway I give you some kind advices to improve: 1) This course uses old version of GA and nowadays people who follows this course can not do the same at a real GA account. Options are slightly different now and it is quite tricky to follow and practice with it (although I managed to do it with my acccount !!!!!!). So I encourage you to do the same for the curren/latest GA version. It will be fantastic to attend one of your courses again. 2) I would remove the audio content of the course. It did not work at my side and we already have video + text versions, so it does not make sense to have it there. Sound files did not work at 2 different PCs, maybe something related with plugins or similar, but this type of course requires video to follow it and see real examples. Thanks a lot for this course. Carlos

The 'audio only' versions of the earlier video clips could be added to the video clip page as an optional download, thus cutting it back to 15 lessons. The few text 'lessons' (section 4, lessons 18,19,20) could also be added to the relevant pages as a PDF download in a font a bit easier to read. Failing that, worth doing. If the cert at the end isn't important to you, you could skip the audio lessons.

I've tinkered around in Analytics before but I've never actually taken the time to learn it properly, so this short course was ideal for me. Eugen explains a broad range of topics thoroughly yet concisely without getting into too much technical detail. I strongly recommend it to anyone seeking an introduction to the world of web data analysis.

If you are looking for ways to understand your site visitors as well as improve your SEO, this course is a must! Eugene really goes into great details to explain things and you won't find that in Google's help file.. Give it a go, you won't regret it!
