Course Description

No matter if you're just getting started with (web) development, if you're applying for a developer job or if you just need to refresh your knowledge - version control is a core skill you need to succeed as a developer!

Git (a version control system) and Github (a cloud provider for Git managed projects) form an outstanding combination to provide the best possible experience to create and maintain a clearly structured project history!

This course guides everyone (no prior knowledge is required!) through the core steps to use these tools in your daily projects with ease.

What is Version Control?

Saving & accessing data and tracking changes is what version control is all about. No matter if you're working on a private or a professional development project, code evolves, changes and continuously gets improved. A clean version management structure is therefore key to successfully manage the progress of your projects.

What is Git?

Git is a 100% free version management tool, specifically created for and used by developers all over the world to manage project code history locally on their machines (Windows, macOS, Linux/Unix).

What is GitHub?

GitHub is an online service, it is also free for many use cases (an account is all you need) and brings Git's local "file-tracking" strengths to the cloud. Storing project code online, updating code, accessing other team members' code or collaborating on large scale projects inside your organization - all possible with the help of GitHub!

Why Should I Know these Tools?

Version control is key to manage projects efficiently so not knowing Git and GitHub makes your daily developer life a lot more complicated. The same apply if you're currently looking for a new job in the industry, version control is required in any developer projects these days, so not knowing Git & GitHub puts you behind your competition!

Although Git and GitHub are user friendly, both come with their own logic and "language". Getting started can therefore be a bit cumbersome and this is where this course comes into play!

What do I Learn in this Course?

This course starts at the very basics, no prior Git or GitHub knowledge is required! You'll learn how to use Git and how to write Git commands in the Mac Terminal or the Windows Command Prompt (optional refreshers on both are also part of the course).

Starting with the first initialization of a so-called Git repository, we'll build up your knowledge step-by-step and understand the what & why behind concepts like branches, commits, the staging area, merging & rebasing, cloning, pushing & pulling branches and a lot more!

What's Inside this Course?

This course was easy to follow and covered the Git and GitHub fundamentals well. The practical exercises made it easier to understand the concepts. It was a good course for beginners and met my expectations. More real-world examples would make it even better.

By Douglas Dougan on 7/9/2026

This is a great course for learning Git and GitHub in a practical way. Manuel Lorenz explains the concepts clearly and makes the lessons easy to follow, even if you are still getting comfortable with version control. I liked that the course focuses on real examples instead of just theory. It helped me understand important Git commands, working with repositories, commits, branches, and pushing code to GitHub. Overall, this course is very helpful for developers who want to build confidence using Git and GitHub. I would recommend it to beginners and anyone who wants a solid refresher.

Very good course with clear and simple explanations. Manuel and Max are great! The course has a great balance between theory and practice. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn version control step by step.

Perfect balance of theory and real-world workflow! I’ve taken several courses from Manuel and Max, and this one on Git & GitHub lives up to their reputation for excellence. It is incredibly comprehensive and covers everything a modern developer needs. Theoretical Depth: The course doesn't just teach you commands; it explains the "why." Understanding the underlying architecture of Git (the three trees, hashing, etc.) makes a huge difference. Practical Application: The hands-on approach is fantastic. Moving from basic commits to complex branching strategies and professional GitHub workflows (Pull Requests, Rebasing, and Stashing) felt natural and well-paced. Clarity: Even the most complex topics—like resolving nasty merge conflicts—were broken down into digestible steps. Whether you are a complete beginner or someone who has been "copy-pasting" Git commands without really understanding them, this course will bridge all your knowledge gaps. Highly recommended!

Course was good, met my expectations, it does teach what is supposed to teach, however, the chapter 7 files are not up to date for the current NodeJS version and there's not an official note from the instructors or anything on how to make the code run, so you have to go to the Q&A to find out from someone else how to get the code to function.

By Ziad Ewais on 1/19/2026

This is a good and comprehensible course. I wish you could add to the future GitHub Projects on how to maintain different boards (Kanban, Backlogs, and other boards), connect repos, and use workflows. Also, on the theory part, how to use branches and workflows IRL, like the differences between GitFlow, GitHub Flow, and Trunk-based development.

By Frederic Hantrais on 1/12/2026

Quite clear introduction. I would have appreciated more on best practices to start or maintain a project in various contexts (small projects, large enterprise, public/private, merge potential complexity...). A quick word about GIT on Linux would also be welcome.

Having taken another Git and Github course on Udemy, I now think this is probably the best at step-by-step, practical explanations for newbies. Some terminology is dated i.e. "master" is now "main" and GitHub functionality has advanced a bit, but still a great course

By Sandeep Saran on 12/29/2025

I learnt a lot from this course. It starts with basics and ends with a real demo of project which shows how to work through collaboration. The trainers explain the concepts in easy to understand way. I hope they create an advance course for GitHub which delves even deeper into working with large open source projects.

By Nicholas Orton on 12/27/2025

Was very well presented. There were a few things that are a bit outdated at this point, just didn't take note of them specifically to offer precise feedback. Otherwise, course was fantastic and just the kind of exploration into these topics I was searching for.
