Golang For DevOps And Cloud Engineers (Udemy.com)

Learn by example how to use Go (Golang) with REST APIs, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, GitHub, Kubernetes, and more

Created by: Edward Viaene

Our take

Based on the ratings of 583 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

Edward Viaene's course teaches Go through cloud and DevOps projects instead of language theory. The syllabus shows 19.3 hours over 112 lectures. A long first application calls a REST API, then sections cover AWS, Azure and the Kubernetes client. The back half is the unusual part: an OpenID Connect identity provider, an SSH server and client, TLS and mutual TLS, and a DNS resolver. It is aimed at people who already script or code and run infrastructure, not first-timers.

Happy reviewers call it practical, and one says nearly every minute of the SSH section taught something web searches never had. Another bought it for the OIDC lecture and found the SSH and TLS lectures super useful too. The complaints are consistent, though. Critical reviews say the teaching moves fast, code gets typed without a reason, and pointers show up before they are explained. The Kubernetes section takes the sharpest criticism. One reviewer also calls the AWS and Azure sections a poor way to manage cloud resources. Another says small on-screen text tires the eyes, and one says no source code is provided.

The course was last updated in November 2022, although a 2026 reviewer says the content still holds up. Of 583 ratings, 503 are four or five stars, so most people got what they came for. It suits readers who can already follow a program in some language and want realistic Go projects. If you need a gentle first Go course, one reviewer says a free Go tutorial is much better for that.

Best forDevOps or cloud engineers with some programming who want Go projects around SSH, TLS, OIDC and the Kubernetes API.
Skip it ifYou are new to programming, AWS or Kubernetes and need slow, step by step explanations of why.

Pros

  • Goes beyond cloud SDK calls into SSH, TLS, mTLS, OIDC and a DNS resolver
  • One reviewer learned new things in the SSH section that web searches never showed
  • Examples are described as real world, production style use cases
  • Covers AWS, Azure and the Kubernetes Go client in one course

Cons

  • Many reviewers say the pace is fast and the reasons behind each step go unexplained
  • The Kubernetes section gets the harshest criticism for jumping between code
  • Last updated November 2022, with only two quizzes and no coding exercises
Very useful course. bought it for the OIDC lecture, but found the ssh lecture and tls lecture super useful. highly recommend.
Tom Hetherington, a student

Labeled intermediate, and the reviews agree: it expects prior scripting and basic AWS or Kubernetes knowledge.

Course Description

If you are working in the Cloud or DevOps space, then this course is for you. Golang has been gaining massively in popularity in the recent years. Forget the small shell scripts you'd write to glue things together. You can create real programs with a great programming language created by Google. It compiles fast, it runs fast, it has static typing, and it has been used to write popular applications like Docker and Kubernetes. It's the best choice to write your next applications in!

I'll show you how to write applications to integrate with any third party that has a REST API. While I'm explaining you our first program that will make API calls, you'll learn step by step how to use Go. Next, I'll show you how to integrate with the AWS API to launch a new instance using Go. Not launching instances anymore because you're workload is completely containerized? The next section shows you how to use the Kubernetes API using the Kubernetes go-client.

Once you went on to integrate with those technologies, you should be able to write your own Go code to integrate with the APIs that you're using within your organization. Happy learning!

I also answer all questions in the Q&A section and you can reach out to me by direct message. I run weekly office hours if you want to talk to me!

Note: this course has Closed Captions available in English (not auto-generated)

Update 04/2024:

* Added how to write a Kubernetes Operator Controller in Go

1. This is one of the best Go courses online. 2. I was looking for professional-level content. 3. Fortunately, I got everything I was struggling with. 4. I don't know how much my confidence has been boosted because of this course. 5. I want to become an expert in Kubernetes API, Go channel routines, and Cobra DNS. 6. All the gems (content?) are in one course. 7. The video is 19 hours long but I finished it in 8 hours LOL I am already PRO

Does contain some practical examples but the knowledge transfer is horrible. Instructor is just jumping around the code, copying snippets left and right and writing own spaghetti code. My comments mostly target the Kubernetes section. Other parts are better and I really like them. This course has a lot of potential.

The course has all the right content, and the teacher is showing all the right techniques for this course, but: - a lot of concepts are out-of-order, e.g he uses a lot of pointers, but not going through them until a bit later - when he goes through he does not explain a lot well why he is doing it, it is just more " this goes there, those gets deleted", not what and why, which leaves you to try to figure out the underlying reasons. If you have a bit of introduction to golang and exposure to devops concepts, it's a great course though!

By Gerard Borst on 4/2/2024

Very interesting and learned a lot! Only section 6 and 7 about AWS and Azure are bad examples because you shouldn't do this programmatically. I think the teacher knows this because he has also a course on Terraform. But as said the rest was very good.

By Anonymized User on 8/25/2023

I have coded ~5,000 lines for a wide array of sub modules so I was surprised that literally every minute during the SSH section I learned important new things I never found through web searches.

By Yaroslav Kostiannikov on 7/19/2023

The course is very good! But it's too sound like a routine. There is a lack of action items, why and for what we are doing that thing, and what we want to achieve as a final solution. less educational explanation and a lot of dry typing making this course less interesting than other author courses. But it is still valuable and useful and helps grow automation habits for those who will find the will to finish it. I changed my mind after the second attempt which was much successful than first. For those who want extra explanation i could advise additionally to author comments use ChatGPT for the extra explanation it can help. Keep it up! And thanks for the good job.

awesome course for guys who already have some knowledge in go, I am enjoying the course so much. the concepts explained here are very good and essential, most of the courses only teach the basics, this course explains some high level knowledge thats required to be a professional go developer. thanks a lot for making this course. hope you create more go courses in future..... ❤️❤️❤️

By Sergio Giuffrida on 10/14/2022

This course has exceeded my expectations. Your contents are really interesting and well explained, I bought other golang courses but this is what I prefer for completeness of the topics and clarity in the explanations.

By Romel Campbell on 7/18/2022

This course exceeded my expectations. Edward explores in depth the inner workings of many of todays popular technologies and protocols like openid, tls and kubernetes. The Go programing language is an excellent fit in this space

By Peter Kaczmarski on 6/4/2022

The initial part which I followed so far sets high marks in many aspects. I am new to golang, and having some experience with Kubernetes I am eager to see how this language can be used in this context. Thank you for providing such great and easy to follow content on this topic ...
