Our take
Based on the ratings of 971 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of May 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.
Part two of Martin Perhiniak's Graphic Design Theory series, and a short one: 27 lectures, about 2.6 hours, most of it in a single 19-lecture Lessons section. It covers type anatomy, classification, picking and pairing typefaces, alignment, kerning and leading, text color and the common mistakes, with examples pulled from posters, book covers, websites and apps. The stated audience is wide (designers, marketers, bloggers, publishers) and reviewers confirm it is pitched at people who have never studied typography formally. Around 5,800 students have enrolled, and the 4.6 rating comes from 970 reviews.
Students praise how compact it is. Lessons are short, explanations are plain, and one reviewer singles out the Milanote boards that come with the series as a reference worth keeping. One marketing reviewer said the section on runts, rivers, widows and orphans alone was worth it. Perhiniak's delivery gets called engaging and enthusiastic. The complaints are consistent, though. There is no way to download the example files. Two lectures of roughly 20 minutes each cover Adobe shortcuts, dead time if you don't use Creative Cloud. Others wanted more depth on font pairing, practice exercises throughout, and less of a print bias; one UX designer noted the kerning and justification advice does not translate well to code.
Value depends on expectations. It was last updated in May 2022, which does not hurt a theory course much, but the exercise section is two lectures totalling two minutes, so treat it as a lecture series rather than a workshop. Next to the UI Design Bootcamp on the same page, which bundles typography with color and grids, this is the narrower and quicker pick. Good for a first pass at type theory; anyone who wants hands-on projects or web-specific guidance should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Short lessons, 158 minutes in total, that reviewers say are easy to stay engaged with
- The Milanote reference boards for the series get singled out as a resource worth keeping
- Perhiniak's delivery is described as engaging and enthusiastic, breaking fundamentals down simply
- Covers the details beginners miss: runts, rivers, widows, orphans, kerning, leading and measure
Cons
- No downloadable example files, and anti-copy measures block screenshots, per a two-star review
- Two lectures of about 20 minutes each are Adobe keyboard shortcuts, wasted if you do not use Creative Cloud
- Exercises section is two lectures and two minutes; reviewers wanted practice throughout and more depth on pairing
Great, compact course on typography essentials. Succinct and to the point, with plenty of replay value.
Listed as all levels, but it is really an introduction; no design or software background needed, Adobe optional.

Course Description
Welcome to the second part of my Graphic Design Theory Series: Typography!
In this course we will explore the realm of fonts. We will be learning the critical principles on how to use them as a defining character of your design, supporting and enhancing the message you convey.
Who would benefit from this course the most
If you love great typography on a poster, a clean reading experience on a website than this course will be a joy from beginning to the end for you.
If you are a designer, what you will master here will be a fundamental element in your creative career. Understanding the governing rules of typography will allow you to masterfully set the tone of your design, establishing subtle hierarchy within the composition to control the attention of your viewers.
Why I made this course
There are so many traps and mistakes you can make from a visual disharmony to the disruption of legibility and readability of text in your compositions. I created this program so you can intuitively avoid these and make typography work.
By the end of this course you will develop a critical eye for the right font, see how to slightly adjust them to make the good perfect - and that difference is what makes a designer and his work stand out.
What will we cover in this course?
We’ll explore all practical aspects of typography including:
The process of effective type picking and pairing
Key type anatomy terms and the classification of typefaces
The difference between typefaces and fonts, calligraphy and lettering
Text alignment, grids, text and image positioning
Professional font customization
Best practices for creating visual interest and control perception
Common typography mistakes and ways to avoid them
The golden rules of choosing text color
Useful keyboard shortcuts in Adobe design applications
And much more
Seeing it all in action
Throughout this course we will analyze various designs, from posters, book covers, business cards and billboards to websites, mobile apps and banner ads. This will not only make the training a real fun but also help you understand and remember the terms that we cover though these examples,
We will also carefully go through every setting option to adjust the type and explore how it would affect the overall visual and legibility.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and took a ton of useful knowledge from it. Martin's delivery is very engaging and enthusiastic! The Graphic Design Theory Series boards on Milanote are a truly amazing comprehensive resource that provides an unbeatable overview that can be referenced anytime one needs it - many thanks to Martin for taking the time to create something so extremely useful!

I learned a lot, and it was overall easy to understand. However, I was hoping for more guidance on alignment compositions regarding typography - especially when it comes to logos and or posters. Also, for the font pairings, I hoped for more specific key details to look out for to ensure you have a good font pairing but I suppose it all comes down to experimentation. But! overall, a good course! :)

I learned so much about typography from this course, and the part about runts, rivers, widows and orphans alone was worth it for my work in marcomms. Learning the science of typography was enormously helpful, especially when I'm reviewing the work of our external graphic designer and offering feedback. The teacher clearly has loads of experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to take a more comprehensive graphic design course from him in the future. Thank you!

I think this was a very useful course. I am looking forward to more indepth lessons about typography. I never knew the history and how much different fonts mattered. Now I can go into a project taking these things into consideration for a design project. I would like to know if there is such a course for applications like Figma, and if we could have a niched course for that.

The course was informative and on point, the author being experienced and aware of the topic overall. Perhaps it was my personal assumption which was a miss, however I was hoping for more typography usage examples in relation to artwork-complementary text (e.g. poster typography, merchandise typography, matching fonts and styles with certain types of media and products from a graphic design perspective).

I went into this course blindly - meaning, I only looked at the title and the short course description. I'm not a graphic designer but wanted to understand the concepts in design, especially in typography. I learned a lot regarding the design theories in visual text. But this course, I learned, wasn't really the one I am looking for as this course dwelled heavily on using graphic design applications. This is useful for people who knew the basics of Adobe Creative Cloud etc, but not for someone like me who only wants practical tips. Having said that, I still enjoyed the course for most of the part. Prolly I will get back and review some topics if ever I decide to try my hands on design using creative cloud.

A great course to get you thinking about how text effects your designs. Also, there was great content on editing options in Indesign that I wasn’t aware of. This will make my layouts from here on out look even better as I apply some of the principles taught in this course to my designs.

It is clear that the instructor knows his stuff and has a deep love of graphic design. I thought I knew a fair amount about typography, and I do, but now I know even more. I don't feel I needed to know about all the keyboard shortcuts, but then I don't work in an office setting where time is a factor. But so much of the knowledge here will help my future designs! Thank you, Martin!

For me as a beginner, the course was very interesting and I learned a lot. Overall, most of the information was new to me. Lots of examples, cool tips in InDesign and lots of useful shortcuts. Lots of additional materials. I recommend it very much. I will definitely try other design courses.
