Our take
Based on the ratings of 11,353 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of February 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
Martin Perhiniak's course is a fundamentals-first walk through Photoshop from an Adobe Certified Instructor. The core runs from the interface and layers through selections, masking, smart objects, adjustment layers and a two-hour retouching chapter, then closes with type, export and workflows. After that come six short appendix sections covering each year's new features from 2018 to 2024. It's built for beginners who want to work the way a professional does, and for self-taught users who suspect they've been missing things. Reviewers in that second group say it filled in exactly those gaps.
Students praise the teaching most. Reviewers say Martin explains without filler, that every sentence matters, and that the pacing inside each video is steady. A couple who had used Photoshop for years say they finally understood what the application could do. The complaints are about age. The main lessons were recorded on an older version of Photoshop, and the yearly update chapters are bolted on rather than woven in, so a few features shown, like 3D layers, are being discontinued. One four-star review notes quiz questions on material never covered; a three-star review adds missing example files and questions in the Q&A going unanswered. Another wanted more Windows-specific guidance.
The numbers are strong: 4.7 from more than 11,000 reviews, with about nine in ten rating it four or five stars, and roughly 62,000 students. It runs 14.6 hours, was last updated in February 2024, and its title doesn't promise AI features the way two of the courses beside it do. If you want a calm, professional grounding in the core tools, this is a solid pick. If you want the current interface and AI tools front and center, a newer course on this list is the better fit.
Pros
- Concise teaching with no filler; reviewers say every sentence earns its place
- Two-hour retouching chapter covers the technical and creative techniques professionals use
- 13 quizzes plus exercise files and study guides, with an eye on Adobe certification
- 4.7 rating from more than 11,000 reviews, about nine in ten at four or five stars
Cons
- Core lessons use an older Photoshop; some features shown, like 3D layers, are being discontinued
- Yearly new-feature chapters are appended rather than integrated into the main lessons
- Some quiz questions cover material not taught, and one reviewer says Q&A went unanswered
One of the best courses I have taken on this site. The instruction is concise and easy to understand. Highly recommend.

This teacher explains things so well and in a detailed way without wasting words -if he is saying it, it is important - it does not feel like he adds fluff or time fillers. The way he instructs is thorough, clear and helpful. On Skillshare I believe it might be a newer version of the glass so there are no “new feature” chapters, and I enjoy the pacing of that class a little better because this is a review for me. But I used both and quizzed myself throughout.

I could not have expected a more comprehensive, useful and very productive course than this one. I enjoyed every chapter. I was not a complete beginner when I started but I felt like I was one because I learnt plenty of things even on the most basic stuff. I would strongly recommend this course to everyone. Great value for money. Thanks a lot.

I had some previous knowledge of Photoshop so I was apprehensive I wouldn't learn a lot of new techniques using this course. That being said, I did end up learning how to use a lot of the tools in Photoshop, and how to work non-destructively which is very crucial if you eventually want to use it professionally. You gradually learn how to use a combination of tools and understand why to use certain tools over others to achieve the desired effect. Cons: I am using CS6 Photoshop so I couldn't use the features available exclusively on Creative Cloud (I am missing out on a lot-- e.g. Sections 15,16,17.) Sometimes the instructor would take a week to respond to questions, also I didn't like seeing numerous user's questions go unanswered in the Q&A. If you are looking for an instructor to give immediate, compendious feedback this course lacks that. Be prepared to google/youtube if you get stuck or if a tool is not working exactly as it should according to the video tutorial. Overall, I recommend this course if you are a total beginner to Photoshop and want to have a good foundation of understanding of its tools and potential.

I have to say: the Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign masterclasses by Martin are probably the best investment in my career as a designer and art director I ever made. Martin is such a good instructor - he's fun, he's intelligent and he has just so much knowledge. Each lesson was so much fun and I sometimes get quite nostalgic revisiting the courses once a year to refresh my knowledge and revisit tools I don't use that often in my professional work. Not going to lie: without his courses, I would work in the position I work in know and wouldn't earn nearly as much as I do know. I think his courses should be mandatory for everyone working as a designer and art director!

This course has helped me a lot. Though I am more interested in digital painting and animation. It has greatly helped in understanding Photo about manupulation such as coloring, toning, move, select, etc., in addition to brushes and other tools also. Explanation was very simple and easy to follow. It has made a complicated topic for me understand easily. I am also looking forward to create my own portfolio. Thank you for your great advice. Thank you!

I would like to continue learning more and more, I am so eager to persue my golds to become a Professional Graphic Designer . Thank you

This Course was amazing. I knew nothing about Photoshop before now i know a lot of course this does not make you an expert still have a lot to learn but basically what this course does is to make you comfortable with Photoshop. You can easily learn new techniques or skills now even you can experiment with different features depends on how much you practice and best of all you can always revisit the things you forgot or having trouble with. Martin is an amazing teacher but does need to be more responsive to Q&A and should be active at least once a week.

Lot of very good information for the beginner to intermediate user. There is a small portion of the layer masking lesson where the audio goes silent. In that same lesson, and in a few others, the material is out of date. The refine edge information is impossible to understand because it is not current. The student will struggle with this unless he seeks other sources of information that are more current. Overall, the course is very good and well worth study, but the small amount of outdated material deals with major points. That is frustrating.

The course is really thorough and gives a pretty solid knowledge on Photoshop for even those who are complete beginners. Martin's way of passing knowledge is perfect: extensive, diverse (with different methods) and with an excellent pace (compared to lots of tutorials where the instructor's talking way too fast to truly grasp it all). After this course whatever concept I have in my mind, I'm confident as to where to start and how to proceed within Photoshop and what else would I wish... This is why I subscribed to the course. Oh and I loved the intros, they were super creative and fun! :)

After having finished the course I'm really pleased with it. Not only does the instructor show how to do things - he also shares his views on the best ways to use the program drawing from his extensive experience. The instructions are really meticoulous and easy to follow. I also liked the fun presentations of the different subjects. My only minor complaint is that it took a while to understand that most of the pictures that were used were actually available for download. There could have been a little text showing on the videos that a pictuere was available for download. But otherwise it's a great course that I highly recommend!
