Course Description

Welcome to the highest-rated course on Udemy on creating desktop apps using Python and Tkinter.

Whether you want to create simple utilities, complex multi-page applications, or internal tools for your business, Tkinter has what you need.

In this course, I'll teach you the techniques to make any kind of desktop application using Python and Tkinter.

A frequent question is: "Why should I learn Tkinter instead of web development"?

  • Desktop applications are much easier to develop than websites. This is especially true for tools and utilities.

  • It's easy to share Tkinter apps with others without needing them to install Python.

  • Python GUI apps made with Tkinter look native to the Operating System.

  • Tkinter apps have full access to the user's computer, which means you can store data locally, safely and securely.

So what's covered in the course?

This is the most comprehensive Tkinter course available on Udemy. We'll look at how you can:

  • Use Tkinter's grid and pack layout methods to structure your apps

  • Use Object-Oriented Programming with Tkinter, and create your own custom widgets

  • Split Tkinter apps into many files, so working on them becomes much easier

  • Add fonts and styles to Tkinter apps using the new Themed Tkinter Widgets

  • Add shortcuts and keybindings to your Python GUI apps

  • Connect to web APIs to send and receive data, stored in the cloud

  • Build games using Tkinter with the Canvas widget

  • Package and distribute Tkinter apps so your users don't need to install Python

We've also included two unique sections in this course:

  • A complete Python refresher. If you're new to Python (but you have some other coding experience), this section will make you productive right away.

  • A full reference of many Tkinter widgets so you learn how to work with them quickly. It's also easy to come back to later to review what you've learned.

Jose Salvatierra

Hi, I'm Jose! I love helping students learn to code and master software development. I've been teaching online for over 10 years, and I founded Teclado to bring software development to everyone—my objective is for you to truly understand everything that goes on behind the scenes.

Coding is extremely rewarding. As you learn, things start to click and make sense. You can join the dots of all the things that weren't quite clear before. I'm here to make that journey quick and painless!

I can help you with Python and JavaScript issues, particularly in web and backend development. I'm experienced with programming libraries and frameworks like Flask, Django, FastAPI, React, React Native, and AngularJS. I've worked extensively with UNIX systems, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and advanced system architecture design.

This course used modern object-oriented design practices when presenting the tkinter scripts. This is valuable because many of the online examples have you pollute your namespace by importing everything from tkinter. The lectures were clear, and the examples helped to reinforce the learning. Overall, an excellent course!

The instructor is well versed with Tkinter. However, this is not a beginner course, so if you do not understand many core python concepts like OOP and how its used with Tkinter classes, the course is pretty much not for you. I recommend taking a full Python course and then come back to this one. However if you feel a refresher is enough for you to understand python, then go ahead and buy the course. If you know python well and you can keep pace with fast English speakers, then the course is for you... Overall, pay attention during the first half of the course, cause that is what gets carried out throughout the course. Wishing you Happy coding....

I waited to do this review until the end of the course. Coming from learning Python and using tkinter with no solid knowledge and just googling stuff around, in many ways this course was what I excepted. I learned a lot, understood a lot and it was really nice that I got hands-on with OOP. Also, it was really nice that he most of the time used PyCharm as I learned a lot seeing him doing this around in this awesome IDE. Jose is a great instructor and you can tell he's incredibly knowledgeable, you taught me a lot, Jose, which I'm thankful. Thanks for all the effort you and your team put into this course. Also, the FAQ sections saved me once as I was having a frustrating problem and I found the solution to it there. Nevertheless I do want to point out a couple of things for which I don't give a 5 stars rating to this course: - Jose goes really fast, so you either slow down the video and try to code along. Even in this way you'd have to stop and start the video back and forth constantly to follow along. - Sometimes, in my humble opinion, he's a bit messy with the coding. He never adds comments to anything, and as he flies coding, he scrolls up and down really fast, changing things in the code and is frustrating to sometimes follow. I like to give lots of structure to my codes and comments to understand what each part of the code is meant to be for future reference. He did teach how to separate projects into different files but not to a great extent. His main app files would still get quite long. -There are no, like in other courses, exercises, homework, projects to challenge you and make you think to do things on your own. Basically, like I said, you try to code along, or watch the videos and then look for the corresponding code in the resources to give it a try. -He's working on a Windows PC, so he mentions a lot what to do for other operating systems and in the documentation you'll find the answers you need, but the focus is Windows, if you are on a Mac or Linux, you have to go a bit further on your own, especially on the last and most important part, which was packaging and distributing executables. -I was always happy when finishing each app, and they taught me a lot coding along but sometimes I had the feeling that these apps although useful to learn, they are not of relevant use in a real world situation, unless someone wants you to build a timer and a snake game. - I had the feeling that the course was going to be a lot more helpful for building stuff for each OS and like I said, Mac was left a little aside. Especially when styling apps it is rather frustrating. This course had me excited that at the end I would be able to have stylish native apps but not really; the course is aimed to use a not native theme that is more customisable because the natives one are not (that is not Jose's fault, that's how tkinter is at the moment). It leaves me with a bit of a bittersweet taste and considering to delve into PyQt5 to have stylish native apps, with UI design tool, so not need to deal with pack, grid, and all the little stuff and details that each app brought that seems to me it would take only practice and patience to get use to. I know PyQt5 is not 100% free. Thank you so much for the course, like I said, I learned a lot and was happy to have gave it a try. For sure, all my code alongs and the available resources, are going to help me a lot to eventually build apps in the future! Best wishes and bless you all at Teclado for all this useful knowledge!

The material is presented in stages with the novice approach presented first for clarity and then explains why elements of the novice approach are bad and how to do them better. However, the narration is monotonic and tends to put me to sleep. I often find myself waking up after the longer videos and needing to watch them again. Good info though.

The course was amazing - well thought, very comprehensive and explains all the details. Everything (formulas, libraries etc) is up to date. The apps we created during this course were enjoyable. I learned a lot. Jose is a great lecturer and from what I could feel during this course, he teaches with passion. He has a very positive attitude. I am going to buy other courses made by him.

Course is great, especially for people who has beginner to intermediate level knowledge on python programming. How Jose explains the phases of development, complete refresher part, documentation and gate to community are definite pluses of the course. I strongly recommend for those want to start GUI development with Tkinter

I had never looked at Python until Covid19 lockdown and my daughter needed help with her IT homework having looked at a number of Python courses I spotted this one which gave a very good start in the language. I have now bought three of Jose's courses and am really enjoying learning more about a language I had always thought of as a second rate language but now love it. Thanks Jose

Absolutely amazing course and Jose is an excellent instructor. Very knowledgable and makes the material fun and easy to understand. I recommend his Complete Python course as a great fundamental course before this course if you have no experence with Python however there is a good refresher to Python at the beginning of this course. Happy coding!

By Kai Hsiang Chang on 3/5/2020

This course covers all the basics of Tkinter and Python as a refresher (which is actually kind of useless for me). Do note that Jose, the teacher, uses Windows system most of the time, for MacOS users like me sometimes Jose mentions about the difference, but other times you need to go to Q&A to find the answer. The project is pretty interesting, you'll be building a distant converter, a timer with settings, and a snake-fruit game. TA is very active, I get a response in 10 hours every time I ask a question. This is definitely worth the money, although you may have to go to stackoverflow from time to time if you want to customize something in your own way.

Great course. Good speed. The Python refresher is long but very welcome to exist. As it is also very complete. If one looks for a downside, I would say that at one point one could forget it's about TKinter. At some point it gives the impression in being an advanced Python course. Also, if you are a beginner in Python, this course could be going a little bit to far. All in all a good course. I recommend it. As well as the inclusion for the tetris game to be included as mentioned during the course. An example with a database connection like an address book. Would not be misplaced.
