Course Description
Master an AI-Proof Developer Skill!
UPDATE: Practice this skill with live AI conversations using Udemy's new Role Play feature in 7 investigative scenarios with AI stakeholders!
It's one challenge to build software, it's another to know what software to build and what stack to build it in.
AI is letting us build the WRONG software FASTER. With this course, learn how to build the RIGHT software in the RIGHT technical stack.
How can you solve the real problems of your users, stakeholders and clients? How can you prevent and control scope creep while deciding what to build? How can you arrive at the most effective MVP? How can you decide on the most effective technology stack for your project? How can you manage feature requests properly? Where do you begin when rewriting legacy software?
All these questions and more are answered in this course. I bring to this course 25 years as a software developer, manager, and user experience designer in small, medium, and large organizations, and I'll cover real world examples, let you practice with quizzes, and provide a PDF worksheet to use in your work.
Who is this course for?
Developers, designers, team leads, project managers, and requirements engineers. Anyone who has anything to do with deciding what software will actually be built and deployed.
What we will I learn?
Techniques to reverse engineer requirements, feature requests, and existing software into problem statements that can be used to determine the best software solutions to actually create.
How to overcome the weaknesses of the concept of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to make the best decisions on what features are truly needed for the software to be successful.
Decide on your software stack, looking at JavaScript frameworks, static site generators, content-driven frameworks, Low-Code and No-Code solutions, content management systems and more, analyzing the purpose of each kind of tool to determine which is best for your project.
Build the best software by embracing user research (user interviews, user observation, usability testing, and more) as a fundamental aspect of your software development process.
Handle feature requests the proper way, viewing them as clues to problems yet to be solved rather than requirements to be estimated.
Learn how to view legacy software as a treasure trove of existing user research, and avoid making the mistake of rewriting software screen for screen.
This course will give you concrete tools to immediately implement in your software development process. Save time, money, and stress by learning to build the right software in the right stack.

Anthony Alicea
Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, now married and living in upstate New York, Tony is primarily focused these days on trying to be a good husband. While inexperienced at that, he's quite experienced in all things web.
Tony has been programming since he was 12 years old, and got into web sites and web application development at 16. After graduating with a Computer Science degree from Case Western Reserve University, Tony continued with that interest as a software application developer and architect, database designer, and user interface designer.
His 25 years of experience has ranged across technologies such as modern semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, Node.js, SQL as well as user experience design, usability testing and more.
He believes strongly that deeply understanding any topic allows you to properly learn it and, even more importantly in a real-world environment, quickly overcome problems.
He also has a deep interest in human nature and behavior, and how that impacts human-computer interaction. This interest translated into extending his career into user experience design and usability research.
Another link in the chain is his 25 years of experience in public speaking and teaching, both in front of large groups and as a one-on-one private instructor.

Like always Tony make courses that teach you how to set you apart from the regular developers. This course give you something better than knowing the syntax of a framework or technology ( something that AI is become better every day ) but how to actually solve problems choosing the right tools for people. Something that AI really can't do. This course is more about changing your mindset about software.

Strong points : Why Down and MSP are amazing tools, also the stack review is a good way for people learn to use what makes sense for the problem you are trying to solve Something to improve : The Role play was amazing and i love it but it felt quite easy and unrealistic, clients come with emotional frustration and sometimes they don't want to be challenge or convince , they think you are just being lazy or wasting their time. Having one or two of those that actually push back would be great for testing soft skills. This udemy feature is amazing and i hope is use more

After several of Tony's courses in my professional journey, I expected his classic focus on understanding the subject's fundamentals and applying them in a refreshing way. Today, I got mixed feelings, not because his course was below my expectations, but because my previous knowledge was looking for something more technical. Don't get me wrong, ANY Tony's course is worth your time and money, only this particular one is more focused on understanding the client's needs by looking at its real reasons behind its first statements (which can easily be interpreted as requirements, the reason why this course exists). To me, it is a good course to add a different kind of skill, client understanding in a more standardised way and from its gathered information, look for technical solutions without any previous bias (always understanding).

The course teaches the important things to know and do to build software right. As developers, we are prone to jump straight into writing code, but this course teaches you to take a step back, understand the problem, and understand the users before writing code. This would lead to writing better code, writing less code, solving the right problems and building the right software

Another beautifully orchestrated course from Tony Alicea - easily completable in a day or two between other things. This wasn't as technically "heavy" as the others he's done, but I always learn something from his courses (and I've been at this for decades). Thanks, Tony!

I learned some things. I knew the course was short (2.5 hours), so I was not expecting more. For me the best take away was how to identify the underlying problems that need to be solved and not stop with clients/users proposed features.

This course helps building a mental model, by showing some efficient techniques, around how to approach building software with focus on going down to underlying problems of users, which the software is going to solve - regardless of used technology. These ideas are simple, yet seemingly often overseen in real world. And maybe that simplicity sounds too obvious, because i would like to see more content, examples and exercises in the course - hence i rated it 4/5.

Great advice that's to the point! The course is a good length in my opinion. It's easy to watch and finish. I will probably watch it again because I didn't do so well on the quizes. Other than that, this course keeps things clear and simple and I'd recommend it to anyone who's involved with creating software.

As a developer moving towards to becoming a team lead, I feel this course is tailormade for me. I have taken all the couses from Tony. Just like the others, I love this one too. Thank you Tony! :-)

i think i have all of Tony's courses, and in all of them, he is clear and concise, giving you all that you need to know. he knows his topics extremely well, i would say that he has truly mastered the topics he chooses to teach - unfortunately which i cant say that for a lot of others. this course was spot on what I needed to be taught. i've been trying to develop apps for about 20 years, and sadly to say that i have been so slow at it, that technology, frameworks, libraries, etc.. has more than i care to admit - been deprecated, bought out, shut down, etc.. due to newer technologies coming out. Tony here gives excellent advice on the process of choosing the right stack that should last for as long as you decide to be a developer, along with giving a taste and explanations to some of the most popular technologies existing today, which absolutely helped my understanding of where certain technologies strengths and maybe weaknesses are. or what problem the specific technologies were created to solve. if you're interested in a good overall process of choosing a stack, even learning some good overall process for app development, you will not be disappointed in this course.
