Introduction to Surface Mount Technology (Udemy.com)

In this Course, you will learn Surface Mount Technology and Master Soldering Surface Mount Devices (SMD) in no Time

Created by: Educational Engineering Team

Last updated February 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 132 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Educational Engineering, the academy founded by Ashraf, pitches this as an SMD soldering course, but the syllabus is wider than that. The SMD material, covering SMT versus through-hole, components, tools, assembly and rework, takes up under three hours of the 11.4 hours. The rest goes to setting up a home lab, through-hole soldering, basic components, troubleshooting and buying parts online. It was last updated in February 2026, so it is not stale. Think of it as a beginner electronics primer with an SMD chapter.

Happy reviewers call it basic but helpful, and one says it gave confidence to use the knowledge in practical work. A reviewer with an electronics degree used it as a refresher before starting a micro soldering repair business. The complaints repeat. There are many slides and not enough hands-on demonstration, even though the description promises five hours of practical video. The instructor is called very knowledgeable, but a couple of reviewers struggle with his spoken English, and the English captions miss words. An experienced through-hole solderer said the tooling and through-hole parts taught nothing new.

The rating is 4.1 from 132 reviews, and about 2,800 students have joined. Most reviews are four or five stars, but 36 give three, which fits a course that is fine rather than great. It is a reasonable pick for a beginner who wants one paid course covering soldering basics and components. Anyone chasing serious SMD rework technique, or already comfortable with a soldering iron, will probably find the useful part too short.

Best forHobbyists new to electronics who want soldering basics, a component primer and a home lab setup, with some SMD included.
Skip it ifYou already solder through-hole and want hands-on SMD technique, since the SMD part is short and slide-heavy.

Pros

  • Covers soldering, components, Ohm's law and troubleshooting in one place, so beginners get a full starter base
  • Reviewers say the basics build confidence for practical work
  • Recently updated, with quizzes and assignments across 22 sections
  • Useful refresher for people with an electronics background starting repair work

Cons

  • Only about 160 minutes of the 11.4 hours is actually SMD, so the title oversells it
  • Slide-heavy teaching, with reviewers asking for drawing, diagrams and more hands-on demos
  • Spoken English and inaccurate English captions trip up some listeners
The course is designed with basic concepts and it is very helpful to learn the basics and gives confidence to use the knowledge in practical work.

Listed as All Levels, but it really suits beginners. The requirements ask for some basic electronics experience.

Basic soldering is a skill that's easy to learn and not hard to master. It just takes practice! There is a huge range of soldered situations out there, from tiny chip resistors on circuit boards to large UHF connectors. There is also a large variety of irons, tips, and solder to choose from, and it certainly does help to have the right tool for the job.

Surface-mount technology (SMT) is a method for producing electronic circuits in which the components are mounted or placed directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). An electronic device so made is called a surface-mount device (SMD). In the industry, it has largely replaced the through-hole technology construction method of fitting components with wire leads into holes in the circuit board.

SMT is smaller, faster, cheaper. In this Course, you will learn everything about SMT, THT, and soldering.

En general el curso ha ido bien, solo me hubiera gustado en lo personal que tuviera la opcion de subtitulos en español, de igual forma la herramienta de subtitulos en ingles no es precisa con ciertas palabras que arroja de forma incorrecta.

By Doyle Davis on 1/27/2026

More basic than expected. Instructor very knowledgeable but language difficult for me to understand at times.
