Course Description
Istio is one of the most talked-about frameworks in recent years! If you've worked with Kubernetes before, then you'll want to learn Istio! With this hands-on, practical course, you'll be able to gain experience in running your own Istio Service Meshes.
The course has now been updated to Istio 1.15, which now supports Apple M1 (and ARM processors in general).
This course is designed to be clear and understandable - and fun! But we also go into detail - you'll be learning how to use Istio in real production scenarios - and you'll be looking at the inner workings of Istio.
You can run this course on your own computer, using Minikube (8Gb of Host Ram required) - you don't need a cloud provider, although you can also run the course there - anywhere that you can run Kubernetes!
After a brief talk about what Istio is, we go straight into a hands-on demo, where you'll experience how Istio can solve difficult problems on live projects.
Then you'll find out the details of:
Traffic Management
Telemetry
Visualisation (with Kiali)
Distributed Tracing (with Jaeger)
Using Grafana to monitor network traffic
How to deploy canary releases
How to do "Dark Releases"
Istio VirtualServices and DestinationRules
Load Balancing and Session Affinity
Istio Gateways
Resilience testing with Fault Injection
Circuit Breaking/Outlier Detection
Securing cluster traffic with Mutual TLS (mTLS)
The "learning curve" for Istio is steep - which is why I've designed this course to be as clear and understandable as possible, and I hope with the hands-on demos, you'll also have fun along the way. But most of all, Istio is an extremely powerful tool, and it's a great addition to your CV!

Till now, You have explained the various benefits of the service mesh implementation with istio in a beautiful way in brief like a movie trailer to make me interested to go through in more detail of all the benefits of the istio service mesh. Quite interesting and excited to complete all the modules and everything.

Its a great start for me, The explanation on VirtualServices, DestinationRules, FaultIjextion and CircuitBreaker are good. With this as a base I am moving forward with Ambient Mesh. Its a good course for any beginners.

Thank you to Mr. Chesterwood for this training, this class was very helpful in getting me into using Istio for our DevOps env. I feel much more confidant in using this service mesh after taking the course Pros: - Great introduction to Istio. - Instructor has a passion behind his work and has a good knowledge of DevOps in general. - Good hands on experience with the tools, charts, and deployments. - The interactive microservice was a nice touch to show how Isito works. - repo for the course material was well put together. - Good explanations of most everything. - The instructor points to documentation on Istio site throughout the course which is an important skill all should learn use. Needs work: - This is a 6 year old course now, its still relevant but I think the course could use some updates here and there. Would have been nice to see an update on using an egress gateway, or how to upgrade with a gateway canary release. - The course says that you can use "any Kubernetes cluster" and you don't need to use Minikube. Be aware if you have a remote cluster, with no ingress loadbalancers, you will be setting up a lot port forwarding, some of which just wont work with the Angular front end at times. Be prepared to use a curl test pod to run requests inside the cluster to follow along with the course material at times. - Some of the explanations are too long. - Would have liked to see diagrams of how different parts of the gateway, virtualservices, and destination rules connect to each other. Maybe a diagram that shows how they connect in some way? I know this takes time to learn, however I think this is a good opportunity to update the course. - Suggest adding some more videos on deploying and managing with more helm charts maybe at the end of the video. All in all I recommend taking this course if you want to start learning Istio!

I jumped into this course after getting confused from everywhere.. The way you have explained Virtual service and Destination Rules is commendable.. Many Many Thanks for your efforts and explaining the complex topics in so details. The course material and resources which you have prepared also deserve 5 star rating..

Excellent course on Istio. The explanations were clear, the labs were practical, and the instructor broke down complex service‑mesh concepts into simple, actionable steps. I now feel confident with traffic management, mTLS, canary deployments, and observability using Kiali, Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana. Highly recommended for anyone working with Kubernetes.

Good to have an overview and know what you can do with Istio, but the instructor doesn't seem to like to go into the technical details of the tool that much. Always complaining about the yaml files and anything that seems to require a little bit of a more "tedious" explanations, as he says

Thoroughly enjoyed the course, great learning on Istio service mesh and related concept. The fleetmap system was indeed perfect app that helped in understanding many concepts mainly on Traffic management & Canary deployment. I surely recommend this course to my colleagues and others out there who are in doubt in opting for this course. Updated:26.Nov.2020 - Its good to see a trainer (Richard) ensuring to update the course when Istio releases with major changes i.e. Istio 1.5 and now Istio 1.8. I'm 100% satisfied with content, quality and delivery of this course. You'll get what is promised in this course - Knowledge of Istion. I happily recommend this course to whoever wants to learn Istio, you'll never get disappointed with this course.
