Course Description

If you have a basic understanding of Java but feel ready to start digging deeper, this is the course for you. It's the perfect followup to our Java 8 beginners tutorial, but also suitable for those who've worked through other introductions, as well.

You will start with a quick review of Java, then jump into learning about object inheritance, interfaces, abstract classes, and polymorphism. From there, Brian will teach you about exceptions and string manipulation, including custom exceptions, checked and unchecked exceptions, and the string tokenizer. This video tutorial also covers topics such as file and binary serialization, database operations using Java and JDBC, basic GUI programming, and generic programming and iteration. You will also learn about additional data structures and concepts, such as the collection interface, working with the vector, working with the queue, and examination of the HashMap. Finally, you will cover multi-threading and networking, lambda programming, and Spring tools.

Once you have completed this computer based training course, you will have developed a deeper working knowledge of Java 8 and the Eclipse IDE.

The course showed how to use GUI Frameworks, Multi-Threading, JDBC, etc. but lacked in explaining the higher-level concept of these things. For example it shows how to use a SocketListener but does in no way explain what Sockets are and how they work on a top-level view. The presenter quickly translates the code into spoken language but seldom explains a rationale why he improves the 2nd solution. No explanation where the downfalls of the 1st solution are. This is what you have to figure out yourself. Lambda Programming is also a bit rushed. It shows how it is done in Java 8 but if you have no clue about functional style programming it is hard to follow. Almost no contextual Info why you have to write it in Java in this way is given so coming from another functional style language it seems a bit arcane.

This course starts out strong and has good lectures about OOP and polymorphism .. very good examples ... But it is kind of obvious that about midway through the course the author got a little burned out and started to rush some of the lectures ...he seems to forget about his audience; I confess that I am troubled by leaving a rating of only three stars , but in the end it was all I could muster .... This course has the prerequisite that "you have learned or worked through the very basics of java programming" so get ready to hear this during the course of a lecture ; ""you can look at this on your own time , were just going to breeze through it real quickly"" or " this is going to be a little more involved but we'll go through it quickly" This course contains a plethora of good quality code but since this is a intermediate class you need to be able to disassemble and grok your way through it .. as others have rightly stated he zips through it quickly and doesn't provide lots of explanation or hand holding ... the lectures are narration only w/o any visual graphics other than the omni-present Eclipse IDE GUI... I'm not going to make a value judgement about that but the potential buyer needs to know this since the instructor is AWOL and isn't responsive ( going through the question and answer sections yields many, many questions left long ago in vain w/o a response ....) and the announcements from Instructor section is still unused...blank ! The thing is that if you are going to become a developer , you are going to have to be able to figure out legacy code in this way anyhow. Developers spend the majority of their time changing existing code not writing brand new code ... However , whether one can accomplish this on some of the advanced code contained within the lectures when/If you are just approaching an intermediate level can be quite dicey... ... so there it is ...temper your expectations here folks ... I'm only leaving 3 stars because of the lack of further support and responsiveness and obvious lack of refinement and reiteration ; I found myself ( once I had gotten the jist of the lectures and was watching for the final time to wrap things up ) adding a few sentences to elaborate upon the author words in the lectures ... a second or third iteration could have helped allot , but it seems this was a set it and forget it exercise for the author. I'm sure that our instructor is a busy pro ,which I guess is sort of an excuse; but I could find code anywhere to pick apart W/O having to pay a cent... And that is where I benefited the most from this course ; because I'm far enough along to have been able to tread water and pick up the slack ... It's something that you will have to decide for yourself whether that is conducive to your own learning style .There are some questions I would've like to have asked but I knew I wouldn't get an answer ......I bought it at a good price and would be a great deal more disappointed had I payed full price ;because at that price the lack of refinement and responsiveness wouldn't make it a decent deal at all ... this course has the potential to be a five star if the author will only reiterate it .

The course is superficial. Complex Java features like Generics and Lambda Programming are not explained, just examples are shown. So students need to infer explanations from examples which is not efficient. The instructor talks too much. For example, he reads a program which is shown in the video anyway, he tells us what he is editing in a program while we see what he is editing. And the instructor talks too fast.

This course is well conceived, and the material is clearly articulated both in the lectures and sample code. It provides a great introduction to advanced topics, but it is definitely just that ... an introduction, as is mostly likely intended. The pace up through generics was awesome. After that, topics were not as deeply discussed. Learning about any of these topics (lambda or functional Java, design patterns) easily requires more specific and advanced research and education.

The course is good, specially to double check the basics and some intermediate topics ... but: 1) It does cover a lot of the basics, I would rename it as “Java 8: From basics and beyond”. 2) The samples in the last sections, specially in the lambda expressions, involved a lot of code and printing, I would prefer to see 2 or 3 examples by topic produced on the fly that could cover the most advanced and usual cases rather than having to uncomment the code and scroll up/down the console to see the tons of lines. 3) I did not like the section related to Collection, I can go and check the documentation by myself. It would be better just to present the samples and the most used and helpful methods there.

This course is pretty unique, in that it is geared at java programmers beyond beginner level, but still covering java programming broadly instead of specializing into a toolkit , program, or product. Topics vary quite a bit, some were very useful for me, other not so much, but that's to be expected in a course not aimed at beginners. Given that it's the only course of this category I've found, it's hard to give it a bad rating. But honestly, it's not really a great course. Not that it's bad, but giving four stars like I do, is giving lots of points for uniqueness. Much of the code leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Lot's of useless code of the type "if (true) return true; else return false;", and inconsistent formatting. On the other hand, I learned a lot about using eclipse using the course (but I'm a beginner). The presenter is certainly professional, and I would be more than happy with him in a real life course. But it doesn't really seem like he cares more than any other presenter, so why should he give a video course?

By Kristijan Tomić on 11/27/2016

Very knowledgeable and clear at his explanations (maybe too fast, but you are able to replay it :)). If you are bored to learn new language and skip things like what are loops, variables... this is definitely the way to go. Must say, i did not got the end but up till 5th section he is incrementing a small project with new topics and makes it a bit more advanced while introducing new possibilities of the language.

Quality course. Fast pace, can be too fast at times so having an additional support it's important (I use oracle tutorials). Examples provided are not academic, but at a higher level and the instructor presents the material in a professional and organized way: it's the 3rd course I get from him. I got one from Infinite Skills on JavaEE (yes I did that before this one, but I had already a decent level of Java), looked up for him on Udemy and internet and found other 2 courses: one a personal release (jUnit, I am yet to start), the other one via Infinite Skills again(this one). Good course to enhance your skills if you are willing to put effort into it: recommended.

The course and information are fantastic but it doesn't seem like the instructor is primarily a Java developer. It almost seems like a C# programmer was told to write a Java course. Some of the syntax wasn't "Java correct" and he didn't really follow a lot of Java conventions. All that being said , the information in the course was amazing and definitely made me more proficient in the language. If you do decide to take this course, make sure to read up on Java coding conventions before or after.

I've been trying to learn programming for a long time, and I've gotten so bored of countless beginner courses and tutorials that I know exactly what they're going to say. This is a course that finally gets to the hard stuff and explains it well enough that I can implement it myself. The only gripe I have is that Eclipse is pretty difficult to use for newbies, and takes a bit of getting used to. If you can figure it out, this course will do wonders.
