Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,755 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a JavaScript course from Colt Steele for people who already know the basics, running about 19 hours across 179 lectures and 20 sections. It picks up where beginner courses stop: prototypes and the this keyword, async code, closures, functional programming, and a run of browser APIs such as Canvas, Web Sockets, and Web Storage. It closes with SOLID principles and design patterns. The requirements ask only for basic JavaScript, and reviewers agree that prior knowledge matters. About 19,000 students have enrolled since it launched in December 2023.

Students mostly praise the teaching. Reviewers describe the explanations as clear, broken into bite-size chunks, and good at making hard ideas simple. One learner preparing for interviews says it cleared up a lot. The complaints are practical. Some want more exercises per section, since the course lists 12 coding exercises. Others mention dead links in a few sections, errors left in on purpose or by accident, and a structure that can feel jumpy. One reviewer says the websocket section assumes Express knowledge. Another wanted the four pillars of OOP covered.

Of 1,755 ratings, 1,254 are five stars and only 17 are one or two stars, so sentiment is strongly positive. The course was last updated in January 2026, which helps for a topic that keeps moving. It is a good pick for someone who has finished a beginner course and wants to understand how JavaScript really works. If you learn by building projects, plan to add your own practice alongside it.

Best forPeople who finished a beginner JavaScript course and want prototypes, closures, and browser APIs explained clearly.
Skip it ifYou want hands-on projects or lots of exercises, since there are only 12 coding exercises across 20 sections.

Pros

  • Explanations are described as clear and in bite-size chunks, even for hard topics
  • Covers prototypes, this, closures, async, and functional patterns in about 19 hours
  • Wide run of browser APIs: Canvas, Web Sockets, Geolocation, Web Storage, Notifications
  • Updated in January 2026, with ES2021 and ES2022 features included

Cons

  • Only 12 coding exercises, and some reviewers want more practice per section
  • A few sections have dead links, and some left-in errors confuse learners
  • The Web Sockets section leans on Express, which trips up people new to it
Great course. Colt Steele is a great instructor and can explain difficult concepts simply.

Suits people past the basics: functions, loops, conditionals. Absolute beginners will likely struggle.

Instructor Details

Colt Steele

Hi! I'm Colt. I'm a developer with a serious love for teaching. I've spent the last few years teaching people to program at 2 different immersive bootcamps where I've helped hundreds of people become web developers and change their lives. My graduates work at companies like Google, Salesforce, and Square.

Most recently, I led Galvanize's SF's 6 month immersive program as Lead Instructor and Curriculum Director. After graduating from my class, 94% of my students went on to receive full-time developer roles. I also worked at Udacity as a Senior Course Developer on the web development team where I got to reach thousands of students daily.

I’ve since focused my time on bringing my classroom teaching experience to an online environment. In 2016 I launched my Web Developer Bootcamp course, which has since gone on to become one of the best selling and top rated courses on Udemy. I was also voted Udemy’s Best New Instructor of 2016.

I've spent years figuring out the "formula" to teaching technical skills in a classroom environment, and I'm really excited to finally share my expertise with you. I can confidently say that my online courses are without a doubt the most comprehensive ones on the market.

Join me on this crazy adventure!

Colt does an excellent job at breaking things up into bite-size, manageable chunks for learning. His explanations are both thorough and easy to understand. Thanks for the great course!

By Johan Daza on 3/4/2026

I was really nice, every single explanation was very clear, I take this course because I had some interviews and studying by myself it was awfull but with this course I learn and clarify a lot

By Abinash Dash on 2/12/2026

This course is really good who ever want to study about advanced js concepts. But more projects should be added in vanilla JavaScript. Overall Colt is a really knowledgeable instructor. I definitely recommend this course, but make sure you have basic JavaScript idea.

By Andreas Ab on 12/26/2025

Good, 5/5, but he never mentioned how "use strict" affects this keyword. Appears he didn't know. Should also mention what is different between truthy/falsy and true/false.

By Giulia Moukouyou on 12/22/2025

super good teacher and material! thank you, I'm learning this course because I'm struggling with js during my internship, so i need to strengthen my knowledge. The teacher is very specific, and explains key concepts in a clear way, I love it.

By Lawrence Martin on 9/24/2025

So far, I'm on section 2, number 17. Unlike a lot of instructors teaching coding, this instructor does a very good job at explaining concepts before jumping steps that could get you lost. With only watching 17 videos I have learned a lot from this course. Thank you!

By Miguel ` on 2/18/2025

Colt is an amazing instructor, no surprise there. However, I feel there could have been more "pro" or "advanced" concepts and techniques in this course. I hope Colt updates this course with more concepts and techniques.

By GS Bhuvaneshwar on 3/19/2024

The whole course is excellent. My understanding of many of the advanced features of JS - like using Async, timers and functional programming - has been greatly improved. I would have liked to see a more detailed exercise or example of using fetch - which is a very basic element - but having its problems in using it effectively. The Web and other APIs are explained very well. But had to skip the last few sections as they are not relevant to my programming needs at present.

By György Böszörményi on 1/28/2024

I loved every minute of it; the only things I missed were the advanced data structures ( Colt uses Map and Set here, but with no explanations ), and some real-world tricky things like versioning etc.

By Jonathan Johnson on 1/26/2024

Colt is an absolute master at simplifying complex topics. Things like inheritance, constructor functions and the infamous THIS keyword has been a source of confusion for quite some time. Keep it up bro
