Course Description

We all have those conversations we keep putting off. Those times when we know we should talk to someone, but we don’t.

And then there are those conversations we HAVE to have as leaders, such as:

  • Addressing behavioral issues

  • Discussing promotions that aren’t coming

  • Mediating conflicts

  • Or worse, laying someone off

It’s understandable if you resist these conversations. Maybe you’ve tried approaching an individual in the past and it went badly. Or maybe you fear that talking about a problem will only make the situation worse.

Having difficult conversations is never easy, whether they're with co-workers, staff or subordinates. The problem is that avoiding difficult conversations has detrimental consequences. And, approaching difficult conversations without clear goals and effective communication strategies can make matters even worse by eroding trust and damaging relationships.

Whether you’re the CEO, manager, supervisor, team lead, or you work in human resources, it is your responsibility to be the example for how to approach difficult conversations.

The good news is that there are PROVEN TOOLS AND STRATEGIES for handling these situations. Plus, when you prove that you can handle difficult situations with ease and grace it will earn you respect, trust, and adoration from those you work with, improving your relationships as well as the overall atmosphere and productivity of your organization.

In this course we’ll help you:

  • Develop a better understanding of why certain conversations are so challenging, why you avoid them, and what consequences you face by not mastering this skill.

  • Overcome fear of confrontation, not knowing what to say, or, ultimately, failure, and develop confidence that you can handle difficult conversations with minimal discomfort.

  • Take responsibility for the success of these situations by preparing in advance and focusing on the desired outcomes.

  • Understand and manage emotions before and during the conversation to avoid escalation.

  • Utilize proven techniques for effective communication, listening, and approaching the conversation.

So, are you ready to transform your relationship with your employees? If so enroll now, we look forward to seeing you in the course!

I have read the book about having difficult conversations three times with three different companies. I really enjoyed this workshop and was especially grateful for the downloads for all the pertinent information. Most people are not having difficult conversations every day so I'm grateful for the "cheat sheets" that can be reviewed when it's necessary to have a difficult conversation.

Course was good on a technical level, both speakers are speaking clearly and are slowly. The content does not go to deep into matters, which might be the inevtiable result of condensing this topic to 90 minutes. I personally hoped for a little more detail. The exercises/resources are in most cases verbatim transcripts of what has been said (or vice versa). Especially the example scenarios left me hanging on how to start the conversation at all (e.g. the colleague not adhering to the company hygiene standards or the 'fire a friend' scenario). All in all: Good summary of the "usual tags" in this area, presented very well, but staying at a kind of "bird's eye view".

All points were covered well, just one point on sandwiching negative feedback between positive things, somewhere I read this reduces effectiveness so this should be avoided. this makes us look as if we are not truthful sometimes is saying things that needs to be addressed. So may be this point should be elaborated in this course.

Content needs to be updated to reflect handling difficult conversations in the Remote-only environments, as most of the Timing and Location decisions cannot apply from this course to the remote-only companies. The content, although insightful, is not presented in an engaging way to the student and feels very much like being read from the screen by the presenters.

Most of the points discussed and explained are very relevant. The course gives a fair idea of situations that might arise in such interactions. It does give us tools to use in different situations, though you never know what the other person's reaction could be in any such interaction. So, one should always be ready for any kind of situation.

This was a good experience, and provided helpful verbiage and situations to consider. Would find it helpful if it had more information relating to employment termination and handling that particular discussion in greater detail (more verbiage, more do's and dont's, etc.). This would be helpful for my staff members as well. Thank you.

Overall it was a good course and the presentation style was good, effective and easy to digest. It was missing real world examples though - it felt too theory-based and would have benefited from bringing that theory into everyday life with role-plays so you could see how the theory was used in a real life scenario. Some good material nonetheless and very useful skills to practise.

By Maria Richards on 10/30/2017

Great insight to the importance of getting those difficult conversations right. Through being authentic and well prepared you're guided in gaining perspective that’s helpful, rather than looking back in hindsight at what you should have or would have done better! There is a basis for growing emotional intelligence here, including tips which some employers and employees may not have previously considered. Clear support PDF material accompanies the videos, with key points for ease of reference. Expertly presented by Joeel and Natalie using some relatable examples that are easy to follow.
