Course Description

The Maven Crash Course is designed to cut academic theory to just the key concepts and focus on basics tasks in Maven in order to be productive quickly. The lessons and examples provided are delivered in a step-by-step, detailed way to ensure mastery of the skills and topics covered.

Course Outline

Introduction walks through the course goals, approach and then define Maven.

After just a little bit of Theory in Core Concepts, we step through Maven Installation on Windows and Mac OS X.

In Setup and Getting Help, we cover how to ask for help in Maven. We also download the course working files on GitHub.

After the setup and installation of Maven, we get hands-on in Getting Started as we create our first Maven project -- keeping it simple with a minimal demo. Maven Basics covers additional concepts. The concepts are continued in Beyond the Basics as we look into dependencies, repositories and plugins within Maven. Then we improve our project by Unit Testing -- where we add JUnit tests, deal with (and avoid) testing failures. Finally, the last section of the main part of this course is dedicated to running Maven within Eclipse using the M2Eclipse plugin.

During the entire course, we get into a habit of saving our changes periodically using Git source control.

Finally, the Bonus section provides some extra lessons to compliment the course and add value. These lesson are non-critical and thus don't belong in the main part of the course.

Course Features

Presentations provide audio/video training of conceptual ideas. Since few like slide-ware presentations, slide-presentations are kept to a minimum (about 20 minutes).

Over 2 hours of Screencasts provide a video of the instructor's computer system with any actions, commands, or screens displayed and narrated.

At the end of each section containing command line interaction, Command Listing lectures that serve as reference and reminder of the commands used in the previous lecture(s). Each Command Listing includes the exact listings used in the previous lectures. All commands used in this course are available through the Command Listing lectures.

The Quizzes at the end of each section reinforce the key concepts by testing your newly learned knowledge throughout the course.

Project files and examples are all available on GitHub.

Great starter class in Maven. I followed along in with every example and I was able to complete this class in one day. I feel like I learned a lot in this course. I attempted several other classes and found that the chosen UI became a big problem. In the other classes, the version of Eclipse or IntelliJ were always way out of date and I spent more time trying to get them to work than learning Maven. Jason stuck to the command line for most of the class which completely eliminated that problem. Complaint 1: Jason never ran his example code. It's not that difficult, but it only take a minute and I think it's a good confidence builder to see the code actually run. Complaint 2: There is a little too much copy and paste. I learn more from figuring out how to do something. Maybe tell the students what to do, give them a chance to do it, and then review the task with the students. Learning sticks better that way.

Halfway and still enjoying it. It's very engaging and good for a maven beginner. It doesn't go too deep with examples, but there is a fair amount of detail here. There are some prerequisites that are skimmed over, such as JDK versions and using a Java environment manager. It's not necessary for the course, but good to know that some projects may require specific JDK's, and would be nice to know and understand how to switch java versions. Overall, I'm enjoying what I'm learning here and I look forward to the next level course.

I like the way how Jason divided this course into sections and in each section there are smaller duration videos. The only thing I had trouble is when the video starts, Jason directly starts doing stuff without describing what he is going to do or what is the objective on that particular video. Everything else is wonderful and I enjoyed his classes.

Perfect course to understand the basic and to start working on maven projects. Speed is not too slow; not too fast. Some lectures where git is used to maintain even the projects created by trainee can be avoided. Also completion of course expects downloading the PDF files having commands used in each chapter and attending the optional chapters like installation on Windows/Mac/Linux. Generally a developer is bound to an OS and should not be forced to even look at the chapter for other OS.

4. Para uma introdução é muito bom.

With so many command lines to try to remember - the instructor made learning through command line a very effective tool with the aid of pdfs to remember them all after each section. Instructor gives everything needed to learn maven as well as get more familiar and comfortable using command line. A nice bonus.

I like the lectures - very free-flowing, clear and concise. The reason I'm docking a star is because the course appears too simple for me. It also felt repetitive at times. I have no idea how much of Maven I have learnt from this course - am I still a novice, or at an intermediate level now, or an expert? What else is out there about Maven that I don't know and will need to know?

I really liked the style of this course with each video being very short and simple. It worked well for me to fit in a video lesson here and there when I had time at work. This definitely gave me a solid understanding of all the basics of Maven and definitely fit my $ and time budgets. Very good examples were used in the course as well. Many thanks!

I have started with a jason's free git course and found he was talking exactly what i wanted, went ahead took GIT crash course and Maven. He talks to the point, sessions are short and east to follow. I am very happy what for taking in these course and straight aways started to apply in my project. Thank you Jason

I took Jason's git class and liked it so much I started looking for others. I would've liked if he spent more time talking about what a build tool is, and uses for Maven when Eclipse can build Java Projects on its own. But this is still the best maven video tutorial I could find by a mile, and he's really good with breaking complex topics down in simple terms without wasting time.
