Course Description

This course is a deep dive into Unity's UI Toolkit. You will learn most of the components that make up UI Toolkit and be able to create complex UI Systems for your games or apps.

This course uses a mix of theory and practice. We will create dozens of little UI-Components and examples. Furthermore, we will have a course project on which we will practice what we learned in the particular chapters. Finally, we will bring it all together and create a fully functional UI-based game.

While this course is not explicitly covering Editor Scripting most of the content in the course will also apply to it.

Here are some of the topics that we will cover:

Understanding UXML and USS Files

Understand the basic building blocks of UI Toolkit. We will talk about the concept of a visual tree and why it's a good idea to separate structure, styling and behavior.

Layouts with FLEXBOX

UI Toolkit uses the Flexbox system which is also used in web technologies.

Templates

We will learn how we can reuse pieces of our layout with templates.

Events and Event Propagation

No UI System can function without events. UI Toolkit has its own Event-System with modern features like event-propagation which we can use to our advantage.

UQuery

Unity is still a game engine, so more often than not most of your work will be done through scripts. U need an efficient way to connect your scripts and your UI and manipulate certain elements of your UI. In order to do that you first need to find those elements. UQuery provides a comfortable way how you can do that.

Data Binding

While for editor scripting there is already a system in place which helps you bind your data to your components, this is not the case for runtime. Therefore we will look at some tools and techniques how you can do this manually.

Custom Components

UI Toolkit has a library of several build-in controls, but obviously, those can not cover every use case that you might come across. In this section, we will see how to create our own controls and thereby create our own little library of reusable UI Elements.

Manipulators

One rule of good software development is the separation of concerns. In this section, we will learn how we can group the behavior of particular elements into manipulators.

Excellent course and still relevant in Unity 6. My only complaint would be the rushing through styling when showing examples. One of the hardest parts of USS (and CSS) is in adjusting styling. In the later lessons, this is skipped over and pasted (like a cooking show where the prep work is already done - viola). Optional videos could have shown the instructor trying to adjust this and select the right flexbox and sizing settings, after the student was challenged to do their own styling. Only outdated content is using Panel Renderer instead of UI document and when creating custom controls, using the much simplified uxmlElement and uxmlAttribute decorators. UXML Binding is new in Unity 6 (esp. as of 6.3), would make a good addendum to the course. It would greatly simplify some of the code here. Otherwise, in the UI Toolkit space, this is probably the best tutorial in getting started.

Excellent course so far (about two thirds in). I see a lot of reviews that complain there's no lesson structure. I feel the exact opposite. It seems to me that a lot of thought went into the exact order in which to present concepts, and how to layer on more depth to previously touched concepts slowly without overwhelming the student. Some of the negative reviews seem to assume that the course will target their exact background and their exact use-case, and they get frustrated when it explains concepts they're already familiar with, or is too "theoretical" instead of showing them exactly how to make the only thing they care about. My position is that I'm new to Unity but have a background in general software development. I've used XML, but not for web design, and I'm familiar with CSS and even flex-box, but I'm not specifically front-end developer. I am finding that I am able to take this class with a limited amount of Unity exposure (not nothing, but not extensive yet) and able to easily understand the concepts because I've interacted with other implementations of web design principles in other contexts. The presentation style is not particularly streamlined, more "natural language" like he's showing it to you in person than "professional public speaker". I don't mind this. For areas I struggle it gives me the time and the hand-holding I need to mentally work through the concepts, and for areas I feel confident in, I can just bump it up to double speed and breeze right through. Overall, this course is a pretty perfect fit for me.

I did learn what i wanted to learn from this course so im starting at 5 stars. One star is lost because of the copy pasting of code and the structure diffrence between sections (we used properties and then didnt use properties again). This feels more like a beginner put the course together and now slowly updates sections as new code features are learned. The other star is lost because of the Game Project at the end. The course is based around "Modern Unity UI with UI Toolkit" but we only used UI Toolkit not held on to modern structure (example: we didn't use stylesheets). I wanted to get a well put together project, where we go through all the knowlegde of the chapters again, so i practice Custom Controlls and Manipulaters again but in the project we didn't use any Custom Controlls, Templates or Events even though they each had their own section. And for a planed project there where some "Quick and dirty" solutions that made the project feel like it was planed on the spot and not in advance.

The first sections which are a introduction into UI Toolkit and principles behind Flexbox layout are explained really well and detailed. I very much liked the visualizations that are provided along with explaining otherwise quite abstract stuff. For this I would rate 5/5. However, since I have prior experience in WebDev, I was looking more towards the practical part where the UI Toolkit is applied to an actual game project. Up to now I'm not too happy with this part because sections of building out the project are mixed with introducing new concepts in a way that is not straight forward to me. I would prefer all concepts to be explained before, and then building out the project uninterrupted using the components explained previously. This would enable the learner to first attempt to build the project on their own and use the videos as reference solution, which is a good way for me to learn. Also I would have expected assets like graphics and icons to be provided along with the course to ensure an uninterrupted learning flow. Since I'm only half-way through the course, I may change to a more positive rating, if things are getting more clear to me.

Best beginner course on UI Toolkit for runtime UI creation. I had subscribed to his YouTube channel as well but the content in this course is complete and very relevant to the work that I was planning to do and it helped me a lot to kick-start my work. As he had mentioned in the course we cannot cover everything but he had covered most of the items which we normally use. Once you finish the course download the Dragon Crasher Demo Package from the Unity Asset Store and go through the scripts for some advanced stuff. I had downloaded the package before completing the course and I was unable to make head or tail out of it, but after grasping the concepts from this course I was able to make sense out of the way the UI menus were set up, etc. Hope he releases some more advanced topics on his YouTube or Udemy as there are not many videos or examples on UI Tool Kit available at the moment. Keep up the good work. Cheers

The course is a nice guide through the features of UI toolkit. After watching the course and following along in Unity I feel like I have a good understanding of how to use UI toolkit. I loved that as a student you develop one project over the whole course where you can apply what you have learned. I also liked that the instructor David talked about some programming patterns related to UI design. It was very easy to follow because David always explained what he was doing. I did not give a full-star rating because the course could have been a bit quicker for me (I watched it in 2x speed and it was sometimes still too slow). I would have also liked more explanations on when you would use certain patterns. For example, when would you use a custom manipulator over a plain class that registers the callbacks? When would you use custom controls over a template that you add functionality to with a plain class? I would recommend the course to anyone who wants to learn about UI toolkit!

Hey! I'm an XR developer that makes apps for mobile devices and Microsoft HoloLens. I have a background in Graphic Design and as such I usually design and implement the UX in most of our apps and prototypes. Thoughts on the initial parts of the course: Very good explanations of things related to layout. I'm familiar with HTML and CSS but it is a great refresher while also confirming what I expected. Thoughts on FlexBox section of the course: I never learned FlexBox and the coverage given in this course really clarified how it works in a very logical way. I don't do much web development at my job, but if I ever need to do it, this is certainly an extra perk as I can apply that knowledge there as well. A two for one is always nice. Thoughts on stuff up to Events in course: Kinda similar to what I said about the initial part with layout, this is a good refresher. I'm glad that templates are pretty much prefabs, and aside from syntax when it comes to queries and things, this works pretty much how I would expect. Very thorough coverage of the topic, even if I'm playing this section at 1.5x and skipping a lot xD.B

Great course going over how to use the new UI Toolkit in Unity. As an introduction to the features and new intended workflows it is a wonderful investment! The course instructor seems very knowledgeable on creating UI and working with the new Toolkit. While German-English dialects can be difficult to understand, David is still very coherent and should be easy to understand for most people. At times the course felt a little slow, but still annoyingly interesting, so most of the time I didn’t skip over anything. If you change the tempo to a place between 1.5 and 2.0 (depending on what you are most comfortable with), you should be able to finish the course in a week’s time and get to understand the ins and outs of the new UI Toolkit before you know. TL;DR: Until we get some more content on the new UI Toolkit in Unity, this is propably one of (if not) the best course on the Topic. Good job!

The course was comprehensive, I am happy with what I learned in the end, and I truly believe the instructor was dedicated to making the content as accessible and as clear as possible. There is no doubt that this will give you what you need to dive into Unity's UI Builder/UI Toolkit with confidence. The fundamental issue is that it felt like the instructor consistently spent far too long to present the material. I watched the course on 2.0 speed and found myself longing for a 2.5 speed option. This is unusual for me-I'm usually comfortable at 1.25 or 1.5 speed. It wasn't the speed of the presentation that was the actual issue, but what felt like a lack of preparation. There were many "Umms" in the speech. A point would often be stated three or four different times, without actually offering insight. A vast amount of time was spent in preamble. You could make a compilation out of the time spent adjusting windows and mentioning minor glitches. I believe that if the instructor worked from a pre-written script, the speech would have been both more confident and concise. If they were willing to re-record videos or cut more liberally, it would have flowed better. For example, instead of handling numerous small glitches throughout the video, maybe have a single short video with clips of the various issues that occurred and how to fix them, then just leave all of the later videos bug-free. Also, I feel that the video could have benefited from better planning of the content. As an example, a decent amount of time was spent explaining that no offense was meant by the use of specific (potentially) historical images and titles, and how the names were changed purposefully to avoid offending anyone. I appreciated the consideration! It shows that the instructor was coming from a good place. Instead of using a historical theme, then, why not instead use a futuristic extraterrestrial theme? In that way, there would be little to no chance of offending, and also no need to worry about offending anyone. I don't take any of these to a lack of care, but perhaps a lack of experience? Again, I want to stress that I believe the instructor worked hard to provide the excellent content of this course. I hope they continue to create future courses! I just could not help but come away feeling like this course literally took 22 hours to teach what could have been taught in 5 (a guesstimate based on a number of sections I purposely re-watched). There were other small issues (eg: using the word "fractions" instead of "factions", "sek" instead of "sec") that I'm certain are due to the instructor not being a native English speaker that were very minor issues and might have lowered an otherwise-perfect course from a 5.0 to a 4.5, but honestly didn't change my rating in this case. Though I couldn't in good conscience give this course more than a 3.0, I really, really want to see the instructor succeed. Their heart is in the right place, I just think there is still a good bit of improvement to be made. Also, I would totally chill with them at a pub. :)
