Learn To Create A Roguelike Game In Unity (Udemy.com)

Game development made easy. Learn C# using Unity and create your very own classic RPG!

Created by: James Doyle

Last updated September 2020

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,234 students and a sample of their written reviews. No course pays to be reviewed.

This one builds a complete top-down roguelike in Unity: procedural levels, a weapon collection and switching system, enemies with different movement and firing patterns, multiple playable characters, a shop, in-game maps, and boss battles. James Doyle teaches by writing the actual game rather than lecturing on isolated concepts first, and at 19.4 hours the course has room to cover that much ground. It's tagged All Levels, but treat that loosely.

Reviewers consistently like Doyle's teaching: reviews call the code clean, the explanations clear, and one repeat student says he's done several of Doyle's other courses and always enjoys them. The complaints cluster around pace and prerequisites: one reviewer who'd already spent five or six months learning C# on YouTube still called it not exactly a beginner course, and sped playback up to 1.5x. Another wanted more explanation around DeltaTime, and one reviewer mentions choppy transitions between videos.

The course hasn't been refreshed since 2020, worth knowing given how fast Unity's tooling moves, though nothing in the reviews flags it as broken in practice. At 4.8 stars across 1,234 ratings, it delivers on the combination of a genuinely finished game and reviewers who say the code itself is worth studying. Come in with basic C# under your belt and it delivers; come in cold and the pace may frustrate.

Best forPeople with some C# or Unity exposure who want to build one complete game, start to finish.
Skip it ifYou're brand new to code and want gentle, concept-by-concept basics before touching a project.

Pros

  • Builds one complete, playable roguelike: procedural levels, weapons, boss fights
  • Reviewers repeatedly call the code clean and well explained
  • One repeat student calls this another well-explained Doyle course
  • 19.4 hours is enough runway to cover a full game, not just a demo

Cons

  • Last updated in 2020, so some Unity workflow details may feel dated
  • A couple of reviewers say the pace is slow if you already know some C#
  • One student says the instructor doesn't answer forum questions
This has been a life changing tutorial. The code is clean and extremely helpful in helping me with a foundation for my roguelike.

Listed as All Levels, but reviewers with prior C# or Unity time get more out of the pace than total beginners.

James Doyle

Hi, I'm James. I have helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games in Unity, and whether you're a first-time developer, or need to refresh your skills, I can help you learn to make the games you want to make.

With a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a background working in independent game development, I have been helping others to create their own games and release them on multiple platforms.

I believe in helping you learn by teaching code in context, so rather than having to memorize a bunch of stuff you've never seen before, you learn how each coding concept can be applied to real working problems in your games.

I can't wait to help you learn all about making your own games and how to make them a success.

So why not start learning to make games with me now?

See you soon!

Perfect course for beginners and also the best guide for beginners it explains everything that needs to be done. If you are a beginner in Unity this course is really recommended and you can dig into this course and learn more. What I did miss in this course is the challenges that the teacher gives him and hence a note to the teacher that she will do challenges in the courses next. Please don't think the course is not good but is perfect but would have been legendary if it had challenges. Highly recommend

Although I am not a beginner programmer I am a beginner in Unity. This course really helped me familiarize myself with the editor and C# concepts (up to now I've mostly been writing Java), but more than that I was impressed by how inspiring the course is. In each chapter there was an 'a-ha' moment immediately followed by an idea of how I could develop a certain concept or a feature further (the one I'm most happy with is a health-reducing crowd control attack that tracks which enemies are in the vicinity of the player to damage them), so even though the developed game is basically the Dungeon Gunner most of the people here created, I am that much more proud for those little details I introduce because for those I can really call this one my first game. I recommend this to anyone wanting to learn Unity or even programming as everything written in C# here is pretty basic and I'm sure anyone with little to no experience can handle it without a problem.

Great course! Learned so much about developing! It might not be best to take this as a first unity course as I did, as some parts can become confusing, and are explained a bit fast. Also questions don't get answered in the Q&A. I didn't realize there was a discord until the end which may have resolved getting stuck a few times. But getting stuck also taught me lots because I could force myself to double check and learn.

Amazing ! ^_^?:-)('')

The course was very good! Lots of good information and, unlike other courses that cover one or two features of a wide variety of genres, it went deep into many different features of a specific genre. Thanks James for your insights and wisdom!

This is a very good course for beginners and also more experienced developers, who want to learn Unity and game development.

The instructor is very clear and takes the time to explain why certain things are setup in a particular way. More importantly, he demonstrates the thought process that goes with creating features in a game, which is something a lot of other courses never cover.

Doyle has a very clear and friendly way of explaining what is happening. He is very affective at helping you understand the tools you have and how to use them. As someone who has never touched Unity before, I can comfortably navigate unity whilst understanding what I'm looking at without being overwhelmed. And he taught me this in one lecture! I'm INCREADIBLY excited to see what else is in store!!!

Sometimes I can not catch your words because you are talking so fast but you have a incredible skills and knowledge about Unity. Thanks for the course.

Loved the course. Have a bit of experience and the level that this tutorial taught at was like finding that final puzzle piece that wasn't in the box. Instructor was very clear and easy to follow while being extremely informative and digging in to just enough depth when necessary without overwhelming the student with jargon they haven't been exposed to yet. Highly recommend this instructor, I went back and bought 3 more of his courses midway through completing this one.
