Learn To Code By Making a 2D Platformer in Unity & C# (Udemy.com)

Game development made easy. Learn C# with Unity and create your very own 2D Platformer!

Created by: James Doyle

Last updated September 2020

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,744 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2020. No course pays to be reviewed.

James Doyle's course is a build-along: you make one complete 2D platformer in Unity, start to finish, over about 15 hours and 115 lectures. The syllabus runs from player movement with a double jump through health, checkpoints, enemies, menus and a level select screen, ending with a boss battle. It is pitched at complete beginners, and the requirements list is short: a computer that runs Unity and the editor itself. The catch is age. It was last updated in September 2020 and targets Unity 2019.3, and one reviewer says it ages less well as Unity moves on.

Reviewers like that James explains why things work, so changing a mechanic later takes little effort. One says the game feels like a real one, not a pile of toy demos, and another likes that he builds reusable pieces such as level templates. The complaints are consistent. Low-star reviews call the pace slow and the explanations circular, and one reviewer says the coding is so basic a short YouTube video covers it. A 2023 reviewer says questions go unanswered and reports glitches in the player controller, world map and colliders. A few others say some sections move quickly.

About 8,600 students have taken it, and roughly two thirds of the 1,744 ratings are five stars, so most people finish happy. It suits someone who wants a first finished game and a feel for how Unity pieces fit together. If you already write code, the pace will drag, and anyone who wants real C# fundamentals should add a dedicated C# course. The reviewer reports of glitches are worth a read first.

Best forTotal beginners who want to finish a small 2D Unity game, not study C# theory.
Skip it ifYou already code and want C# depth, or need a course updated for current Unity.

Pros

  • Ends with a complete game: double jump, checkpoints, enemies, menus, level select and a boss
  • James explains why things work, so reviewers can tweak mechanics on their own
  • Builds reusable pieces like level templates, so the parts fit together like a real project
  • Newcomers to game making say every action was well explained and they managed it all

Cons

  • Last updated in 2020; one reviewer says it ages badly, with glitches in the player controller and colliders
  • Coding is very basic, and some say explanations are slow and circular
  • No quizzes or coding exercises, and one reviewer says student questions go unanswered
It moved a little quickly at times, but overall, everything was well explained and very interesting.
Ben Quesada, a student

Fits true beginners to Unity and game structure, but the C# is very basic, so newcomers will want more later.

James Doyle

Hi, I'm James. I have helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games in Unity, and whether you're a first-time developer, or need to refresh your skills, I can help you learn to make the games you want to make.

With a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a background working in independent game development, I have been helping others to create their own games and release them on multiple platforms.

I believe in helping you learn by teaching code in context, so rather than having to memorize a bunch of stuff you've never seen before, you learn how each coding concept can be applied to real working problems in your games.

I can't wait to help you learn all about making your own games and how to make them a success.

So why not start learning to make games with me now?

See you soon!

James

This course is great at many things but really bad at one or two things... This course will teach you how to use Unity, how to build a 2D platformer, the process flow, etc. James teaches in a way that helps you understand what is going on so even if you want to tweak something from his content, you are able to do so with minimal effort. What this course is not good for is actually learning how to code. Sure, you are "coding" throughout the video but it is at the absolute most basic level - something you could get out of a 5-10 minute YouTube video. That said, I'm not trying to downplay this course at all, it's great - just the title/description of the course needs a little change. That said, as I am writing this, I believe James came out with a new course so maybe check that one out instead for making a game (I think he took off the focus of learning how to code, but who knows). For learning how to code in C#, look elsewhere. Another side note, unlike several other teachers on Udemy, James doesn't really answer questions... It's not too bad as he explains his videos out pretty well, but compared to something like GameDev.tv, he is not even close. To sum it up, good course, take it or it's new twin, set expectations that you will learn Unity and how to make a 2D platformer but you won't actually learn how to code and you won't hear from James most of the time. Cheers!

This course has been fascinating. James expertly guided us through each aspect of game development, from animation to scripting. He provided time for us to ponder our approaches before demonstrating his own methods. Rather than offering a step-by-step guide to complete game development, he focused on helping us master key elements. With the knowledge imparted by James, we were able to independently complete the entire game development process. So far, I have developed levels 1 through 4 of the game. Three more levels remain, requiring the creation of maps and enemies. Additionally, I took the initiative to design the 'Possum' enemy, drawing on James' guidance. Currently, I am figuring out how to enable the fox character to climb ladders vertically.

Thanks so much James! Just starting my GameDev Journey and I have learned a lot. I hope you would be able to create a new tutorial for making 2D Turn Based RPGs. I know you already made one but an updated version using URP and other new Unity Stuff will be really awesome. Thanks again, we will join this build in a GameJam and post it in itch.io. I hope you can drop by sometime and see what we have managed to make. :)

One of the hardest things when learning to create software in a new system is composing components together. This course is a great start at cracking this problem because James teaches us how to create player characters, enemies, levels, environmental hazards, a level select screen, a boss fight, a pause screen, and more. Most importantly, James shows students how to compose these elements to create a complete game with reusable components like level templates (prefabs) all in about 15 hours. The course was a little long (ideal would be 5 - 10 hours) but was full of useful segments that were short so students can fix problems/debug quickly. What would have pushed the course from a 4.5 to a 5 out of 5 stars is if there was a segment on character animations and projectiles that damage enemies or buff stats like invulnerability etc. I highly recommend the course.

Amazing course, as a beginner I really appreciate how James teaches you in a way that it's always very easy to understand the process and how to think logically, the only thing left to do is practice practice practice, the more you practice the easier developing and coding will be, there isn't a single course that will teach you everything you need to know, so to me this course is a very important step towards my goal, so I just gotta go for the next one, and you should too :)

Not a bad course, however it does feel like it was rushed a little bit especially near the end and some of his coding practices aren't the best. One of the things that bothered me was that he didn't remove the Start and Update methods whenever a script didn't use them which often misled me into thinking that he was gonna use those methods later. Not only that, it also comes off as lazy to me.

I started this course with a love of video games and zero knowledge of Unity or C#. In fact I was pretty terrified of coding and programming. The beginning of this course is wonderfully slow and I gained a solid foundation of creating scripts and the workings of unity. Midway I was able to debug my own code! At the end I had a full level and boss battle with lots of ideas to continue building on the fox world. I re-watched the videos many times over and enjoyed them each time. James has a lovely voice and is great at teaching!

Great course!!! Well explained, easy to follow.

By Alexander Kazazis on 12/13/2020

This is a superb introduction (or refresher) to building a 2D platformer. The course covers all the basics (scripting, sprites, animation, front and back end menus, sound and music), but also walks you through an impressive array of features, including a moving platforms and switches, an interactive "map" screen a la SMB3, and rudimentary enemy AI. Everything works as designed.
I have only two quibbles about the instructor's coding style:
-There is almost no refactoring, so methods can go on and on; and
-The instructor makes extensive use of public variables, even where serializing the field would do. This violates the best practices of OOP.

Easy to follow, nice and simple! thanks!

I like it easy

I am new to game development and this course has helped me a lot. I've learned some of the basics and I can't wait to learn more. I will definitely buy another course when I am done with this one.
