James Doyle

Hi, I'm James. I have helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games in Unity, and whether you're a first-time developer, or need to refresh your skills, I can help you learn to make the games you want to make.

With a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a background working in independent game development, I have been helping others to create their own games and release them on multiple platforms.

I believe in helping you learn by teaching code in context, so rather than having to memorize a bunch of stuff you've never seen before, you learn how each coding concept can be applied to real working problems in your games.

I can't wait to help you learn all about making your own games and how to make them a success.

So why not start learning to make games with me now?

See you soon!

James

This course provides a good introduction to Unity development, and I appreciated the step-by-step instructions and in-depth explanations. James is an engaging instructor and I enjoy his teaching style. I would love to see a bit more robust architecture. As it stands, this course is great for learning concepts, but wouldn't be suitable for a published game. For future iterations, implementing a persistent scene manager could improve code organization and reduce redundancy. Adding controller support would make the project more accessible to different players. These enhancements would take the course from good to excellent. But if you're just starting out, or trying to understand what's possible with the Unity engine, do give this course a try. You can't beat the price, and you will learn techniques you can apply in other projects :)

Very good explanation of how UI works! Be careful, Unity changed their UI system to mainly support the TextMeshPro versions and you can't use the same functions and methods in these - you'll need to use the Legacy Text and Legacy Button objects. All in all great job by James and I'll definitely use this in my next projects!

A fantastic course that teachers you how to set up a fully functioning main menu, options menu, pause menu and loading screen. The options menu includes the ability to change graphics and audio settings. This course helps you build a menu framework to work with any game. I even went a little further and added a "Apply Defaults" button to my options screen. I have many courses by James and they are always top quality. James explains things in a way that can be easily understood, and takes you through each step at a time. The content is relevant and adaptable.

Because this is a free course there is no instructor Q&A. I got stuck at Section 6, Loading Screen. If you change the code to "asyncLoad.progress > 0.89f" in the PauseMenu and MainMenu script, it will work. However, this took me a while to figure out, and I still have no idea why the code didn't work for me with 0.9f. Since you may end up with a broken Loading Screen even if you follow the code exactly, I can only give this a 4 star. Otherwise the course is great with lots of useful information on creating a menu system.

I'd always found menus and user interfaces in Unity strangely daunting, despite anything else I could code. I had looked through dozens of tutorials and guides in the past and still never quite felt at home with the concepts. This course has explained everything in a clear and concise way, and the real difference compared to so many other tutorials is that this one actually IS easy to apply to your own game designs. An afternoon's learning very well spent! Thank you very much :-)

Excellent course for beginners! Up to date as of 2019. Covers the basics of creating menus. Loved the content. I give it an extra 5 stars for being free = 10 stars. I would invest on a course that covers simple/basic menu designs using Krita or Gimp, showing several different examples how to customize an existing menu art or how to create our own. Maybe a few different art style examples...maybe even one section on creating simple Blender 3D menu assets and creating or using textures etc

Great course. Very straight to the point and easy to follow along. I own all of the courses by Mr. Doyle and must have recommended his courses to numerous others who want to learn how to learn game coding in a fun way. I have actually been working on continuing the -Build a 2D RPG- by James as well and wanted to create a sort of universal menu that I can plop into any future games. James, keep the tutorials coming please!

As always I am learning new things with James. At first I thought I already know how to create a menu system in Unity. However, by taking this course I really learnt some technical details I never heard about before and which are very helpful. I recommend taking this course, and I see no reason to not to since it is even free. Thank you James!

I really enjoyed this course, taught me so much on how the UI works in changing Menu and how to link everything back and forth. Especially with adding in the partical prefab, have added this already to my new project. As a Noob, found it easy to follow and clear understanding.
