Course Description

Note: though much of the course was recorded with an older version of Unity, the final project has been updated to use Unity 2019.

Though there are minor differences in the UI, you should be able to complete the course using Unity 2019.

We have created several advanced features to make this the most complete course on designing a Match-Three course in Unity:

  • re-skinning your game using your own Sprites

  • checking for the deadlock condition (no more available moves)

  • shuffling the Board pieces (instead of deleting them and re-filling the Board)

  • building a one-, two-, or three-star score meter

  • creating new level objectives (scored, timed, and collected)

This course now weighs in at a 16+ hour marathon in game development.  Save weeks of work on building your own match three game.

Join the ever growing ranks of our class and see what you can build today!

In this course, we will:

  • start with a blank Unity project and flesh out a fully working game level

  • learn some fundamental techniques for creating your own tile-based match-three puzzle game

  • follow several C# scripts line-by-line and learn how to organize our scripts logically and cleanly

What is covered:

  1. Setup our project settings and environment

  2. Create a Board class to store our tiles and game pieces

  3. Create an auto-centered orthographic camera

  4. Make a GamePiece class that can move with interpolation

  5. Setup the tiles to receive mouse input

  6. Search for matches in a two-dimensional array

  7. Handle recursive calls to clear and refill our Board

  8. Add sound effects to game events

  9. Apply particle effects to add some punch to our graphics

  10. Making a score manager to track player progress

Join the democratization of game development! Level up your Unity 3D skills and build your own match-three game today!

When you complete the class, you should have a full set of source code as a starting point for your match-three puzzle game!

This was my first course using Unity. Through the instructor's own admission the course turned out to be more intermediate than beginner level than anticipated. However through Wilmer's thorough explanations I was able to follow along and certainly learn quite a bit. While some concepts are still a bit over my head, I at least can grasp the general idea how some of the more complex systems work. I was able to successfully refactor the code at the end of the course and it still worked so I think that says a lot to the quality of Wilmer's teaching. I would certainly recommend this course to anyone with a desire to learn about making a match 3 game. I wouldn't mind taking another of Wilmer's courses once I go back and learn some more of the basics this course didn't quite cover. Thanks for the course Wilmer!

This is a much deeper dive than most "make a game in Unity" courses. Wilmer has excellent attention to detail, and considers architecture and best-practice when he teaches. The course is much better prepared than most other courses, and there is a lot (a lot!) of programming compared to other game courses that rely more heavily on out-of-the-box Unity controllers/interaction. The game completed during this course, while it has no levels (you could easily build some with the tools provided) is still much more complete than any other game tutorial I've done. Having now completed two of Wilmer's courses plus several other (large, multi-game) courses from other providers on Udemy, this was my favourite overall. I don't recommend this for someone entirely new to Unity because there's a lot of programming and it assumes some knowledge of what a GameObject is, what a MonoBehaviour is, etc. Overall, great course, I rate it 5/5!

I really had no interest in learning to program a match-3 puzzle game. However, I thought I would check the core mechanics out in case I wanted to adopt some of the principles into creating an Empire & Puzzles type game. I never would have thought that a match 3 game would be so involved behind the scenes. I have followed several other classes in game development with Unity; RPGs, first person shooters, turn based, etc. None of them are as involved and have the coding structure, class creation, core logic, etc. that this class has. Wilmer Lin is an exceptional instructor. His pacing is perfect and he takes the time to explain what and why he is doing something. His code is so well structured and thought out that you can’t help but learn something. I finished this class with a greater respect for match type games and a very high opinion of Lin. His knowledge of Unity and C#, experience in game development and expertise is so obvious. He has set the bar very high for other Udemy instructors to match. This class is well worth your time and investment and I highly recommend it.

I love that the instructor takes the time to spell out exactly what he's going to do in the course. I wish we would have taken a little more time explaining the coding concepts behind creating the board, filling it, and collapsing the pieces. There was explanation of what the game is expected to do, but less of the code we used. I should note that I'm newer to coding but have done 4 or 5 games through another tutorial previously. Once we got past the initial setup (board filling, creation, etc), the other lessons went really well for me and were a little clearer. Wilmer did a great job with this course in terms of completeness. He has added content after the fact and there are now over 100 sections with a slew of them revolving around Q&A questions. He also did a great job responding to the Q&A questions associated with each course. I'd recommend this course for those interested in making a match 3 style game.

I was really surprised at how much extra content Wilmer added to the original scope of the course which shows how much he pays attentions to the forms and care for teaching and helping his students learn and grow. This course focuses more on UI Management and Object Oriented Programming, although there were room for improvements and Wilmer himself confesses to this, which was really refreshing to see in comparison to most tutorials. Wilmer takes the time to explain why a design decision was taken and even tries to predict what you will do and show you or explain why it would not work. I found myself a few times typing only to stop because Wilmer would say "Now, you might think that you can just do X to solve this problem but that won't work and here's why..." and I would stop, look at the screen, and say to myself "Can he see me!?" (lol. of course not, he is was just anticipating what most people might do and he is regularly correct!) Though the course was first made with an older version of unity and many of the work arounds for things like resizing the UI have been made standards in future versions of Unity, I recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn more about: - The UI System in Unity - Touch input - Game Flow Management As well as how to add multiple "modes" to a game I'm a senior software engineer and I consider myself an intermediate transitioning into expert Unity developer and I still learn so much from Wilmer often more on design choices and User Experience which help fuel the designs of my games. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Keep them coming!

I've taken a number of Wilmer's courses, and this one challenged me the most. The best thing about the courses Wilmer Lin creates, is that he doesn't leave any loose ends. He does a great job of making a fully functional MVP, that is also aesthetically pleasing, complete with all the bells and whistles, like audio, user interface, animations, etc, etc. I'm pretty much at the point where I'll enroll in any course Wilmer puts out. If I could recommend or request something specific to this course, perhaps a video or two, following up everything in the course, with some ideas and structure for how to continue refactoring the code. The Board.cs class, for example, is well over 1000 lines, at this point. I know I can work on it myself, and I shall. But I'm not as experienced, and it would be nice to see how an experienced pro would go about refactoring a project like this. That being said, it would likely be a bit of work, and so I'd personally be happy to pay for a course that just covers refactoring and extending the code of the courses he's already done. A follow-up course with three sections, that focuses only refactoring, extending, and maybe adding interesting new features to his AssassinsGo, Tetris, and Match3 courses, would be awesome, and I'd buy it today if it were available.

Wilmer did a great job in creating this course. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning to design and code a Match-3 game. The formulas and clear explanation of how best to setup the orthographic camera in the 6th lesson were worth the cost of the course alone. If you're new to C# or Unity I would recommend taking a primer course before starting this course. Wilmer does a great job of explaining things but he does go topics that I would judge to heavy for a novice coder. I did learn, after a time, that in many cases I can speed up the audio by 25 - 50% to reduce the overall time spent listening. If the topic started to get dense I could slow it down to standard speed. It does take a lot of work to get through all the lectures in the course, you will get out of it what you put in. While in hindsight I didn't always agree with Wilmer's approach to solve a specific challenge, his approaches do work and are well documented. (every programmer has their own style and Wilmer's is respectable) If I were to offer a suggestion it would be that some "homework" exercises be developed as part of the curriculum. Wilmer writes most of the code, for me having some additional thinking exercises that involved creating code before being spoon fed would provide additional learning value. If you're on the fence about investing a little money and a lot of time in this course, don't be. Your time will be well invested and you'll have a blast making Match-3 your own!

I'm not an Unity expert (current ly I'm working on other platforms), and for me is invaluable all those micro-details making the difference between the middle programmer and the expert. OLD: Currently I'm about chapter 20 and I'm (pleasantly) surprised for the extreme level of detail on everything. UPDATE: Currently I'm watching chapter 80. Much of the code is slowly being refactored as the project is progressing , so many (old) questions and concerns I had about the code were automatically responded itself. This course is AWESOME, the detail level is incredible , and there are tons of parts that anybody can reuse for other projects. This is an absolutely recommended course for any Unity programmer. It is also awesome that EVERY chapter has its own code to the point the teacher has been explained. It's a very handy aspect that makes the difference, specially if we screw up something along the way. LAST UPDATE: Last chapters about boosters and raycasting are golden.

I liked the Course a lot and I learned a lot of new stuff. Working with Lists and how to use them to get the results that you want at any point of time was for me as a beginner-intermediate something I really needed to learn and with this course it was a perfect way to get the knowledge. I learned using a pretty simplistic style, which we modify later on, but it actually makes a lot of fun playing the game. I don't know how someone else would feel about the game, but I myself enjoy it and I feel proud, even so I just copied the code^^ I now have the fundamentals to turn the demo into a game with different levels etc For me as someone whos native language isn't english I was able to understand everything that he described. I had to Review some of the list-part, but thats the beauty of this type of course. You can go back to the parts which you didn't understand and rewatch them and then figure out what is going on so that you can use it in the future. I don't know what else to write. For me it was definitely a snap buy and if you are on the same level as me and you are interested in the topic, go for it!

Hi Wilmer, thank you for this amazing course! I learned a lot new thing in this course, and helped me refreshing the things I already knew. I would like to suggest you 2 things, and that's why I give you the 4,5 rating. First off, I would love to have exercises in the course. Instead of just typing all the code for us, you should leave things to us to figure out! That way, we would learn even more. Let us pause the video and you set challenges for us to complete! We can always watch you do it after we gave it a try! Secondly, I think you could've used more 'advanced' coding. Like delegates or events, stuff like that. That gives us even more tools in our toolbox to start making/improving this or our own project! Other than this, amazing how visually attractive you made this course. Got me really excited to learn all of the concepts of match three games! Big thanks and shout out to you for this course! Would recommend this to all of my friends ( if they were such geeks as myself hehe )
