MongooseJS Essentials - Learn MongoDB for Node.js (Udemy.com)
Learn how to create Mongoose Schemas to build a full CRUD application based on the MongoDB database design.

Our take
Based on the ratings of 3,200 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free 42-minute walkthrough of Mongoose, the Node.js library that wraps MongoDB in schemas and models. Patrick Schroeder builds one thing: a Book schema, an Express server, and four routes that create, read, update and delete records, tested through Postman. That's the whole syllabus, 8 lectures across 3 sections. It's for people who already have Node and MongoDB installed and understand require() and basic Mongo data types, and who want to see Mongoose in action before committing to a longer course. It is not a Node course or a MongoDB course.
Reviewers like exactly what it promises: short, clear, steady pace, and a small working app at the end. Students call the instructor's explanations clear and well structured, and the 4.6 average from about 3,200 reviews backs that up. The complaints are about scope and age. The course was last updated in April 2017, and a few reviewers hit errors just by following along and could not get past them; one found it too fast to code along with. Others wanted at least a bit of front end, or deployment to a remote server, and one reviewer notes the mongo shell shows nothing until you save a record, which the video never says.
Value is easy to judge since it's free. The four Node courses listed alongside it are full bootcamps; this is one narrow slice on its own, dated 2017. Expect to check the code against the current Mongoose docs and to search past any errors, as two low-star reviewers had to. Worth 42 minutes for anyone who needs a quick, working mental model of schemas, models and CRUD routes before starting a bigger bootcamp. Not the pick for people who want current tooling or anything beyond the back end.
Pros
- Builds a real working CRUD app with Express, Mongoose and Postman in about 33 minutes of video
- Reviewers say the pace is steady and the schema versus model idea finally clicks
- Free, 8 lectures, one focused topic with nothing padded out
- Around 3,200 reviews averaging 4.6, with 78 percent at four or five stars
Cons
- Last updated April 2017, so check every line against the current Mongoose docs before trusting it
- Two low-star reviews hit errors just following along, and one reviewer found the Q&A no help either
- Back end only: no front end, no deployment, and a single quiz for the whole course
Terms and concepts are introduced in well structured manner, not overwhelming, not slow/boring either.
Says beginner, but assumes Node and MongoDB are installed and that require() and basic Mongo data types already make sense.

Who it is for
The instructor says it suits
- This course is intended for those who are already familiar with the basics of both Node.js and MongoDB. This includes an understanding of the CommonJS pattern of requiring in modules along with an understanding of simple data types defined within MongoDB.
What you need before you start
- You should already have Node.js installed
- You should already have MongoDB installed
Course Description
In this course we will build a simple application to show how to perform full CRUD (create, read, update, delete) operations within Node.js.
We'll be using the Node module MongooseJS. Mongoose allows us to define our models in the form of a schema, along with a simple to use API that abstracts away a lot of the pain of working directly with the MongoDB driver.
First, we will create a Book schema using MongooseJS. We will use string data types to add a title, author and description. Next, we will build a simple server using Express.js. Then we will build 4 routes to query, update and delete Books from our Schema. We will use Postman to perform actions on these routes and check the results in our browser.
What You Will Learn
- Build CRUD Applications
- Create Mongoose Schemas
- Design Routes using Express.js
- Create a Server using Express.js
- Build a RESTful API

Terms and concepts are introduced in well structured manner, not overwhelming, not slow/boring either. CRUD application section is giving you oportunity to see mongoose in action on a simple example app - very useful. I am happy. If you are have no prior knowledge on mongoose (like me) this course is a very good first step, i think.

This is a short and simple yet very effective and to the point course.Using this course i was able to clear many doubts that i had about mongoose schema and models in very short period of time. Thanks Patrick..you are doing some really good stuff out there on Udemy.Kepp the good work up!!

When connecting the db and trying to show collections nothing is shown and I was trying to find out what the problem was, but even in the questions section this wasn't answered clearly and finally after a search I found out that the data must be saved into the db before trying to see it by running show collections in the mongo shell and this isn't mentioned. This was the only comment and for the rest I liked the course and thank!

The explanations are perfect, easy to understand and very useful. By the way, what was very frustrating was the fact that that the lecture stops at the api requests. The CRUD exemples are at the API level. Would be amazing if we could build a page with a form where we could fill with the data, record into the Mongo and then have a success or error page. Even so, what was touched was perfect!

good intro course overall with real word applications. loved the fact that you showed the use of the online documentation to navigate the libraries. There are a number of errors throughout the lecture - i think troubleshooting these are a very valuable lesson but would be nice to have a heads up on these up front at the beginning of each lecture so i don't feel like i am circling the drain/losing my mind. Thank you for putting this together!

Quick, straightforward, easy to understand what he's saying, he covers a lot of ground - high new knowledge to time ratio. Lacking a star because: a little disappointed that there were no examples on how to query the embedded sub-documents in the schema (there is a pop-up but...). Would also like to see a practical example of how to use schema.types.objectId and refs. Just a sidenote - when starting mongod and node app - you say ok, bring up the shell, but don't mention how. I paused and Googled it. On Mac you need to open new terminal window and type in mongo to get >

It seems that MongoDB has been updated since the course was created. `show collections` was empty after running the server. After the books were entered, it worked. I even tried the given code for both app.js and Model.books.js and it still didn't work. Since the DB was there, I continued and it did finally work.

Asside from the speed bump I encountered during the database creation, this has been a very informative tutorial. This is better than the other tutorials I've experienced (I've gone through alot...ending in frustration because I couldn't understand parts of the process). So far so good! The only change I would suggest is slowing down during the example creation. Maybe even suggest the user to pause in order to follow along more closely.

The course was everything i expected, a solid introduction to mongoose. Easy to follow along and instructor provides his code in a zip for each lecture. I liked the mini intro to postman chrome extension as i have downloaded it in the past but never really knew what to use it for. This is probably one of the best free courses i have taken.

This is the second free tutorial I have done from Patrick on Mongoose and MongoDB, and have really gained valuable knowledge. I love the pace of the course and how he uses code examples to explain concepts. Highly recommended course
