Node.js, Express, MongoDB & More: The Complete Bootcamp (Udemy.com)
Master Node by building a real-world RESTful API and web app (with authentication, Node.js security, payments & more)
Created by: Jonas Schmedtmann
Last updated November 2024
Our take
Based on the ratings of 30,347 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a 42-hour back-end bootcamp built around a single project called Natours, with a RESTful API and a Pug-rendered website. Across 229 lectures and 15 sections it covers Node fundamentals, how the event loop works, Express routing and middleware, MongoDB with Mongoose, authentication, security, Stripe payments, email, file uploads and deployment. It is aimed at people who already know basic JavaScript and want to move into back-end work. Complete coding beginners will struggle, since the only JavaScript section is an optional hour on promises and async/await.
Students consistently praise Jonas Schmedtmann's teaching. Reviewers call his explanations crystal clear, well paced and detailed, and one singles out the behind-the-scenes lectures as the key to understanding Node fundamentals. The project also gets a lot of love. The main complaint, and it shows up in most three-star and lower reviews, is age. The course was published in 2019 and last updated in November 2024, but many library versions in the videos are now stale, so Stripe, Mapbox and MongoDB steps no longer match exactly. One student says pinning the same package versions Jonas used makes everything work. Another wants practice exercises, which the course does not have.
Among the Node courses we list it alongside, the Complete Guide advertises GraphQL and Deno in its title, neither of which appears in this syllabus. This one is built around a single project instead, and it suits people who learn by finishing one thing thoroughly rather than touring many topics. With over 30,000 reviews and a 4.6 average, the teaching still holds up. Just expect to read the Q&A and fix version bugs along the way. Worth it for patient learners.
Pros
- One large project, an API plus a rendered site, ties every topic together instead of isolated demos
- Behind-the-scenes section on the event loop, streams and modules, which one reviewer calls key to the fundamentals
- Authentication, password reset, rate limiting and sanitisation get about 5 hours of coverage
- Clear, evenly paced explanations; reviewers call the tone and speed perfect
Cons
- Library versions in the videos are stale; Stripe, Mapbox and MongoDB steps often need Q&A fixes
- Uses CommonJS and skips TypeScript, testing and OAuth, according to reviewers
- No quizzes or exercises across 229 lectures, so all practice is typing along
The understanding and teaching of the concepts are really on point. However, what could be improved is that most of the libraries being downloaded are outdated.
Listed as all levels but it assumes working JavaScript; fine for front-end devs with no back-end experience.

Then Node.js is the hot technology for you to learn right now, and you came to the right place to do it!
Welcome to the Complete Node.js, Express, and MongoDB Bootcamp, your fast track to modern back-end development.
This course is the perfect all-in-one package that will take you from a complete beginner to an advanced, highly-skilled Node.js developer.
Like all my other courses, this one is completely project-based! And not just any project: it's a complete, beautiful, and feature-rich application, containing both a RESTful API and a server-side rendered website. It's the most fantastic and complete project that you will find in any Node.js course on the internet!
By building this huge project, you will learn all the skills that you need in order to plan, build, and deploy your own modern back-end applications with Node.js and related technologies.
(If you feel like exploring the project, you can do so at www[.]natours[.]dev. And this is only a small part of the project! Log in with "laura@example.com" and password "test1234")
After finishing this course, you will:
1) Be building your own fast, scalable, and powerful Node.js RESTful APIs or web applications;
2) Truly understand how Node.js works behind the scenes;
3) Be able to work with NoSQL data and model data in real-world situations (a hugely important skill);
4) Know how modern back-end development works, and how all the different technologies fit together (hard to understand from scattered tutorials and videos);
5) Have experience in professionally used tools and libraries like Express, Mongoose, Stripe, Sendgrid, Atlas, Compass, Git, Heroku, and many more;
6) Have built a complete application, which is a perfect starting point for your own applications in the future.
Please note that this course is NOT for absolute web development beginners, so you should already be familiar with basic JavaScript. NO back-end experience required though!

I had a wonderful experience in going through the in-depth lectures from Jonas. I was new to Node.js, Express and MongoDB and Mongoose. Jonas' in-depth lectures not only helped in gaining an understanding but I developed a keen interest to learn these topics further. The only drawback is since these lectures were created a lot of things have changed (in last 5-6 years). I had struggles particularly with external APIs like mapbox or Stripe. But nonetheless, Jonas' lectures have provided me a good idea about the topics, and now I feel confident on the topics.

The course itself is really good. The understanding and teaching of the concepts are really on point. However, what could be improved is that most of the libraries being downloaded are outdated. It would be helpful to update the lectures with instructions on how to download these libraries from the current websites and how to use the latest versions. It can be quite difficult to download some of the libraries needed for certain functionalities from other websites. Other than that, the entire course was amazing, and I really enjoyed learning from it.

explaining like a water crystal clear even though course is about one tool but this one also gives you extra knowledge too extra tools where to go from here options what to learn after that is incredible huge props to this guy for making whole courses linking one to another front end to backend this guy got you covered

This is one of the best Node.js courses I've taken. Jonas has a very organized teaching style he breaks down each function and concept into small, easy-to-follow parts before putting everything together. Instead of just showing code, he explains why each function exists, how it works internally, and when to use it. I also appreciated the course structure and the real-world projects, which made it much easier to apply what I learned. If you're looking for a course that focuses on understanding the logic behind the code rather than just copying it, I highly recommend this one.

I love it this course, I'm a not native english speaker, but the teacher explains very clearly and I understand most of the words that he says, I like it, I hope to take more of the courses with him.
By Priyanshu Kumawat on 2/28/2026
To be honest, Jonas is an amazing instructor, and the course is very well structured for even beginners and also the ones who already have some experience with Node.js. Even though packages in this course and projects are old and outdated, and might cause breaking changes when you try using the latest ones, but honestly, taking such a course introduces you to some real-world issues that might occur in any real app at any organisation. This course gives you a chance to explore and tweak a little with the documentation of the latest packages and how you could implement them into your project. This gives you real-world experience and wayy better hands-on technologies than any other developer who just watches tutorials and just implements what is shown in the tutorials. Again, thank you, Jonas, for creating such an amazing course. I like the way it is!

If you are someone trying to learn NodeJS when you know Javascript or any Javascript front-end libraries like React/Angular and you want to really understand how Node works and how any sort of backend works, this course is really helpful and gives you insights in that regard. I wanted to appreciate that most of the confusions I had about Node have been cleared up. PS: Learn Javascript and be strong on the basics before taking this course. Thanks!
By Aleksi _ on 1/22/2026
Course has a good structure and theory and engaging delivery. There are several outdated parts as this course uses Node.js v10 and Express v4. Some npm modules are either deprecated or there have been changes in how they are used. This forces you to go deep into documentation alongside the course and be critical about some implementations. I cannot give it 5 stars but I can certainly recommend it if you are willing to do some work.
By Rishikesh Negi on 1/8/2026
The course is well-structured and covers most of the concepts that a beginner Node.js developer must know. However, the content is old and outdated, with a few deprecated packages, syntax, or features, and requires you to look up solutions on your own whenever you encounter a problem arising because of the outdated content. Overall, I'm satisfied with the course and have learnt valuable Node.js, Express, and MongoDB backend development skills.
By Eraam X on 12/22/2025
Great course, but some parts of it are outdated in 2025. Nevertheless, I'm glad that I took it, it was challenging (especially outdated parts), but somehow I managed with the help from other student in the Q&A.
