Our take
Based on the ratings of 45,706 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of November 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a free, short course that walks through 25 or so rules for making a website look designed rather than assembled. The syllabus shows 19 lectures across 4 sections, and the core guidelines section runs about 45 minutes, so the "learn web design in 1 hour" pitch is honest, though Udemy lists 2.5 hours of content in total. It covers typography, color, images and icons, whitespace, visual hierarchy, and eight tips for getting visitors to act. There is no coding. It's aimed at developers who can build a page but can't say why it looks off, and it also works for beginners.
Reviewers like how direct it is. Jonas Schmedtmann explains each rule with a real site as the example, and students say the explanations are clear; a couple also single out the resource list and tools. The 5-star share is high, with around 25,000 five-star ratings out of 45,700 reviews. The complaints are consistent and fair. Three-star reviewers call it shallow or say there was nothing new for them, and one calls it too old, even though Udemy lists a November 2024 update. One student also had trouble finding the promised e-book.
It's free, so the value question is easy. Treat it as a primer to finish in an evening, not a design education. Next to the long full-stack bootcamps it sits beside in our web development list, it fills a gap they mostly skip: why a page looks good. The instructor's own description notes the same material is inside his HTML and CSS course, so if you own that, there is nothing extra here. For everyone else, the syllabus and the reviews suggest it's an hour well spent, with no projects and no certificate.
Pros
- Free, and the core 25 guidelines fit in about 45 minutes of video
- Rules are concrete and reusable: text, color, whitespace, hierarchy, conversion tips
- Includes a free resource e-book plus pointers to free fonts, icons and image sites
- Clear, well-produced explanations; 4.5 rating from over 45,000 reviews
Cons
- Shallow by design; 3-star reviewers say there was nothing new for anyone already familiar with the basics
- Published in 2015, and one 3-star reviewer calls it too old despite the November 2024 update
- No coding, no projects, no certificate, and the e-book is hard to locate
Short but really good explanations + lots of useful information sources and tools. Thanks a lot!
Genuinely all levels: no code and no prerequisites, though anyone with design experience will find little that is new.

I I admit this is one of the easiest courses I've ever taken but very very informational and you start to do the great job of extending the material there you go

Great course overall. The content is informative and easy to understand. I would have liked more practical exercises, but the explanations were clear. Definitely helpful for anyone starting out.

This is a very compact course. An absolutely basic introduction to web design. But even though I'd previously studied other courses and textbooks on the subject, paradoxically, such a compact introduction seems to make sense and is a nice summary of the subject. If you were to tackle your first design project, you'd likely get stuck at the beginning, analyzing the layout from the perspective of complex composition theory, rhythm, balance, and complex color theory. For your first project, it's probably better to leave all this aside, reach for some existing inspiration, and simply create your first project based on these simple tips from Jonas's course. It won't be perfect, but it will be adequate. Improvements and all the additional knowledge will come in subsequent iterations.
