Course Description
Music Composition 1 is the first course in a series of two courses that teaches how music is put together and how to write your own music. The course is divided into two parts. Part one covers the study of rhythmic composition. Part two covers the study of melodic composition. (Harmony and form are studied in Music Composition 2)
Course lectures consist mainly of video but also include some text. Each section of the course covers a particular concept (or related concepts). Concepts and compositional techniques are demonstrated throughout the course with real musical examples (pictures and audio samples).
Besides lectures, each section of the course also contains memory questions, section quiz, listening assignments, and transcription/composition assignments. Memory questions serve to summarize and reinforce key concepts learned, while the quizzes test the students’ knowledge and understanding of the material from each section. Students who take this course will get practice transcribing music (hearing a rhythm or a melody and writing it down). In the composition assignments students will get real life practice using the information and techniques learned in each section to write their own rhythms and melodies.
Who should take this course? Every student of music should know how to compose! It is a sad but true fact that most modern music teachers and music courses do not include music composition as part of the students’ musical education. In the past it was typical for students of music to be able to compose music. The “complete” musician can play an instrument, has knowledge of music theory AND can also compose! If you want to deepen your understanding of music, learn to write it!
Course Includes:
190 Diagrams and Audio Samples (to illustrate concepts taught)
125 Memory Questions (to reinforce concepts taught)
90 Transcription and Composition Assignments (to practice the concepts taught)
76 Listening Assignments
21 Quizzes

I'm very happy I took this course! It gave great insight that elevated my understanding for music. Learning how important rythm is to the foundation of your piece and how all aspects interact was such a joy. I love how brisk the explanation were and how the assignments were sectioned of so perfectly as to teach you each new element of composition one component at a time! I'm moving on to Music Composition 2 now! Thank you!

Parfait.

I'm new to composing, and this course really helped me to learn a lot of introductory stuff. It also helps you start composing using principles with structure. The only thing I think is missing is more chance for evaluation. The quizzes are kind of repetitive and simple, there is no chance to know if you are applying the principles of each composition assignment correctly. Maybe more questions about finding the correct note or identifying would be good.

This course has been engaging from the very beginning, I have learned so far lots of valuable information that I will use in my future compositions. I havent finish yet the course, but I feel very happy and enthusiastic so far that I'm doing this course, because every subject are well presented, very clear and Professionally well delivered. Thank you very much for your wonderful work. Lorenzo Cowan.

One of my main frustrations in learning how to compose my own music has been a lack of connection between my understanding of theory, and it’s application in composition. As I am a very impatient person, I prefer a more concise, quick and to the point learning structure, and would always get frustrated trying to pull together the randomized tidbits of information I was lacking to fill in the holes of my knowledge. I found this course handled those items very effectively, and was done in a very interesting/engaging way. I would highly recommend it to others looking to do the same, but would not suggest it to those who dont have at least a rudimentary understanding of musical theory first.

I've been looking for this course for a looong time! I am a guitarist. I've done all sorts of courses. Some have been enlightening, but the real deal is that MOST courses only teach you THE TOOLS and TECHNIQUE. This course right here will teach you how to use the tools to manifest what you are trying to say musically. It teaches you the basic building block of musical phrasing. Isn't this what so many of you guitarists search for? This is it right here. I got a killer deal for this priceless info. I would even buy this at full price if I hadn't wasted so much money on other courses that I already had the tools. I guess I was always looking for how to use the tools. Man oh man! super duper glad I found and bought this course. Next Jimi Hendrix right here!

The course introduces several compositional concepts, which is really good. Also, the listening assignments are a good source of good music that should not be ignored. I feel there could be some "challenge assignments" here and there such as "compose a 36 measures study using your knowledge on periods and phrase groups", for example. Surely, students should experiment themselves, but this would be some nice motivation to challenge ourselves and apply our new knowledge in some more complex tasks. Edit: ok, so after taking Music Composition 2 I can see this is an introduction to tools you will use in the next course. Definitely take Music Composition 2 to more real life examples and complex tasks.

This course taught me a lot. It saved me so much time from having to study musical compositions that have already been completed. Mr. Peters gives you real tools that will allow you to create good sounding musical material that has a purpose. It should be noted you must be able to read music and have a beginner to intermediate understanding of music theory. If you do not, you will have to google a couple of concepts he talks about but does not cover in the course. Overall this is great course taught by a very competent man who makes the information easy to digest. If you take notes, do the composition assignments, listening assignments, and quizzes, you will leave the course with a much greater understanding of the tools used to compose music of any genre.

The course greatly helped me achieve my objectives and even exceeded my expectations. It wa very engaging with enough activities like quizes and assignments. Production quality was very good except that the instractor's pronaunciation was a bit of a challenge. One would take too much time repeating the phrase trying to get what the was trying to say in a certain word for example. Overall, the course was well structured to make understanding very ease and connect things logically in the mind. I have no doubt to recommend this course to whoever wants to take lessons on composition.
