Course Description

Music Composition 2 is the second course in a series of two courses that teaches how music is put together and how to write your own music. The course is divided into two parts. Part one covers the study of harmonic composition. Part two covers the study of compositional form. (Rhythmic and melodic composition were studied in Music Composition 1. It is highly recommended that you take Music Composition 1 before taking this course.)

Course lectures consist of both video and text. Each section of the course covers a particular concept (or related concepts). Concepts and compositional techniques are demonstrated throughout the course with real musical examples (pictures and audio samples).

Besides lectures, each section of the course also contains memory questions, section quiz, listening assignments, and composition assignments. Memory questions serve to summarize and reinforce key concepts learned, while the quizzes tests the students’ knowledge and understanding of the material from each section. Students who take this course will get practice notating music with music notation software. In the composition assignments students will get real life practice using the information and techniques learned in each section to write and develop their own harmonic progressions. By the end of the course students will have composed a number of entire pieces in various compositional forms.

Who should take this course? Every student of music should know how to compose! It is a sad but true fact that most modern music teachers and music courses do not include music composition as part of the students’ musical education. In the past it was typical for students of music to be able to compose music. The “complete” musician can play an instrument, has knowledge of music theory AND can also compose! If you want to deepen your understanding of music, learn to write it!

There are some sections, specifically the part on modulation, that can be made more clear. I had a very hard time wrapping my head around that one. However, this course has advanced my understanding of composition by leaps and has given me the tools to understand more advanced concepts that I can study on my own. As a beginner course, it builds the best foundation to build composition mastery upon.

Before coursing the two music composition courses, I knew nothing about harmony and melody (I'm a drummer and recently I began to play the synthesizer), and I thought I wouldn't need to know about those two subjects until I got here in 2021 where I want to compose music but without knowing how, and thanks to Mr. Peters and his courses, now I know a lot more than before and I feel capable of developing that compositional skill maybe I had had locked within me (that's what I'm about to find out). I greatly suggest to know how to play any harmonic instrument, specially piano or any keyboard.

Overall a similar good quality to Mr Peters' other courses; a few minor points: some of the example pieces did not have scores in the public domain - better to choose scores which are in the public domain in this case; the score for the Clementi Sonatini was not attached to the Sonata form lesson as stated; it feels like there is a degree of material not covered (as this is a beginner course), so a list of further topics and suggested reading/learning resources would be helpful

If you're someone like me who want a head start in your music college classes this is a big help. But if you're not interested in school but instead you're a beat maker and dont want to go through college THIS IS THE COURSE FOR YOU AS WELL AS THE MUSIC COMPOSITION PART 1. If you haven't got part 1 go get it before you get this some of the methods used in part 1 are viable here. This talks a lot about harmony about 80 percent of what you can think about harmony is in this course of course and its straight to the point so you dont have to worry about learning fluff or a life lesson in this course if you pay it now or wait for a discount season its worth every penny. Some people may not like his voice but in my opinion if you're here for MUSIC it don't matter what his voice sounds like as long as hes teaching MUSIC and nothing else you wouldn't care if Kermit the frog was teaching you hes that efficient at what he teaches. And it covers a many of topics and he breaks it down to a simple point that you can be first grader reading below your grade level and still be able to comprehend what hes saying.MOST DEFINITELY WORTHY OF 5 STARS IF I COULD GIVE 10 I WOULD.

I learned a lot from this course (I took both I and II back to back). It is basic, which is exactly what I needed. The exercises helped to remove my hesitation with getting started. Early exercises were simple enough for someone like me, new to the subject. Toward the end, the quizzes and exercises became much more challenging and gave me a feeling of accomplishment, and inspired me to fill my free time trying things beyond the lesson requirements. The material was brief, but free of fluff, and comprehensible. I would have liked to learn more about composing music beyond the styles of the common practice period, but I also realize that would have made this a much longer and more advanced course.

What I like in this course is how the subjects were splited in small parts, step by step. Each section and each assignment demand you just a small achivable task, but, in the end of the course, you realize that you've acquired a great amount of knowlege. Composition has always scaried me, but this course helped me to demistify my fears and start to learn. I want o to say thank you to Jonathan.

Very good course! Informative, applicable, guided! Like Music Composition 1, this course is short but very instructive for beginners! It outlined the way to the finished music pieces -- how to build progressions, how to harmonize melodies, how to arrange a whole piece of music. It is a very good course for the ones who don't know how to make simple melodies into well-composed music. The course is well structured, and behind the topics the logic or the key to composition is well structured. There are notes for each lessons, which is so convenient and I arranged them all together for later revision and guide. And each lesson has a series of practice, which are extremely important -- they are not just single pieces of practice but directs what to practice and how to start!

This was a great course and definitely expanded my knowledge. However the previous course (Composition 1) flowed a little better and there were fewer videos. Still overall a great course and a great foundation for me. Jonathan's courses are so rich and the assignments can be revisited again and again. I highly recommend taking this course a minimum of 3 times if you are a beginner like me. Enjoy.

Everything you need to know to get you started in musical composition. Very well presented - concise, concepts introduced incrementally. By the end I was writing music I would never have been able to just by studying theory books. Mr Peters is helpful, if you get stuck on anything. It's not easy, requires work and some degree of dedication. But everything is here, if you want it.

I have been a musician for 29 years. I was a musician in the Marine Corps and have been through the Armed Forces School of Music Basic and Intermediate course. I have always wanted to be a composer and have a few transcriptions under my belt. I just want you to know that chord progressions have always bedeviled me. The light bulb never clicked on, until I took your Music Composition 2 course. My goodness did the light come on! I get the concept now and for the life of me, I don't know why other instruction makes learning chord progressions so difficult. With the knowledge I now have on chord progressions, I am now about to develop the TONS of melodies I have floating around my head into something tangible. Just wanted you know that I appreciate your class and am hoping beyond hope that you will do a 3rd class! Thank you much!
