Course Description

This Course in a Nutshell

If you don't know NestJs, it's like Angular but for the backend. With it, we can write our backend using the same concepts and object-oriented APIs that we already use to structure our Angular frontend: components, services, modules, pipes, etc.

NestJs is also quite similar to popular libraries that you might already be used to, such as, for example, the Spring library in the Java ecosystem, or ASP.NET MVC for the C# ecosystem.

Course Overview

In this course, you are going to learn from scratch how to design and develop a NestJs backend that will take the form of a REST API that queries a MongoDB database using the Mongoose ODM (Object Document Mapping) library. We will be providing a complete CRUD example showing how to perform the most common REST data retrieval and data modification operations using NestJs.

No prior NestJs, MongoDB or Mongoose knowledge is assumed as we will explain everything from scratch. We will cover all the essential NestJs concepts such as Modules, Controllers and injectable services.

We will learn in detail how to validate business data using a decorator based approach (with decorators like @IsString(), @IsPhoneNumber(), etc.) by leveraging the built-in NestJs Validation pipe.

We will also implement using NestJs commonly needed backend security functionality such as User Authentication, RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) Authorization, error handling, and cover more advanced NestJs concepts such as Filters, Pipes, Guards, interceptors and middleware.

Table of Contents

This course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to NestJs

  • Running NestJs in Hot Reload and Debug mode

  • Writing our first NestJs REST endpoint

  • NestJs Modules, Controllers and injectable Services

  • Introduction to MongoDB

  • Setting up a cloud MongoDB database

  • Introduction to the Mongoose ODM library

  • Querying MongoDB from a NestJs REST endpoint

  • Complete CRUD example with NestJs and MongoDB

  • NestJs Filters and custom error handling

  • NestJs Pipes, building a custom pipe

  • Data Validation with class-validator and the Validation pipe

  • NestJs Middleware

  • User Authentication with NestJs

  • NestJs RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) Authorization

  • NestJs Guards

What Will You Learn In this Course?

After taking this course, you will feel comfortable designing and developing applications using NestJs. You will have learned everything that you need to know in practice for designing and developing production-ready secure backends using the NestJs framework.

The Angular University aims to be the one place that you go in order to learn and keep up with the whole Angular ecosystem. We provide premium quality video tutorials, screencast style.

No matter if you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced in Angular, we have several courses for you.

More about me:

I'm a Software Developer with many years of experience, very seasoned building user interfaces with Angular. I've worked as a Frontend Developer/Architect in a large variety of enterprise projects throughout the years.

I worked on a ton of projects, everything from single page applications to help build the European Criminal Record Information Exchange System, to brand new e-banking portals, to corporate banking portals, and more. I've been a key part of internal framework teams that built frameworks for in-house departments of tens of developers.

I also love to teach, write and talk about technology.  I am looking forward to be your Angular instructor,

Maybe due to the fact that the repository has not been updated in almost 4 years, I had a couple of issues with injection and connectivity with the database. Besides that, this is a great course for MongoDB and NestJs.

Another wonderful and informative offering from the Angular University! As with all the AU courses, this one was not too long and contained just the right amount of useful topics and examples. I'm certain that this Angular University course will become like all the others in my library--I'll refer to it often and use the examples again and again.

The course is great, straight to the point of interest in every lesson, the only thing that didn't convinced me is the fact the we're using a mono repo and some times the teacher uses things from the front repo it would be better if the front is completely separated so we know for sure that the things we're using are from NestJS only

Vasco is a great instructor. I think there are bugs in this course though, My project would not build with the build scripts until I modified them. The shared types between the two sub-projects in the shared directory of 'course.ts' and 'lesson.ts' probably should not have been shared. I included '@types/mongoose' package to get typing as the instructor should have to get typing and it caused me to have to derive the types 'Course' and 'Lesson' from the 'mongoose' type, 'Document' to get typescript to compile it clean. Otherwise this course is excellent as all the others have been! This course is worth taking, I learned a lot! Probably more from this course than the others from Angular University.

One time I was confused because the mongoose Model doesn't show hints for me. But uncle google solved that problem. Just I was download and installed mongoose to Jetbrains javascript library under Settings > Language & Frameworks > JavaScript > Libraries, but it was good knowledge too for me :). I started at three at half stars, three times I have changed my rating and when I looking back it was an amazing course. Thank you

I liked the course in general, the lecturer explains concepts quite well and I learnt a lot, however, there were a few things I didn't like. - Very little use of the Nest CLI - The tslint rules in the repo are different to what's in the lessons which if you're coding along gives you a few recommendations. (in particular, every time I wrote a double quote I got a squiggly line) - There's too much Angular. I know Nest is inspired by Angular, but I don't think there's a need to edit any frontend code in this course. - Sharing the interfaces between client and server didn't work when installing mongoose @types. Also I didn't understand why the interfaces were exported as a class, except to be able to use the class-validator package, which I've not seen mentioned in the Nestjs ecosystem before. - Nest uses Passport for authentication. it's not necessary, as demonstrated, but it's what the official documentation recommends and I would have preferred to learn how to implement it in Nest. Nothing other than that, as i said the course is good and I'd definitely recommend it.

Very good course and well explained step by step. Too bad the first section with the local data isn't working. But in order to learn Nest, it's probably one of the best lecture. I just hope that this course will be filled with some testing example in a near future, so we can test a bit our backend. By the way : subtitles are horrible, but it's not your fault.

Vasco explains everything really clearly. He breaks everything down into small easily digestible steps, which combine to build useful functionality, which you then find you completely understand, because you have been led through it effortlessly, step by step! Definitely one of the best Udemy instructors I have come across.

I was looking for a complete course on NestJs, I ended up buying multiple courses but wasn't satisfied with any of it. This is the only NestJs course which was really complete. Thank you Vasco, I enjoyed and loved the journey through your course. I wish I could have taken other courses from your collection but I'm a ReactJs Guy ;), but sometime later I'll go through your typescript course. Thank you again :) Thanks, Nabeel Kausari

Excellent course on NestJS, but it could be enhanced with some more in depth content on the finer points of Nest. Also, a comparison of the use of Mongoose and TypeGoose would be very helpful, as my own research indicates to me that there are tradeoffs for each. I would love to get an expert's view of how they compare and guidance on selection criteria. Finally, I am not clear on some of the project build happens, specifically, how the shared folder is shared between front and back ends. A full lecture on this and other build issues, explaining how this project works would be a great addition. If these things were added to the course, I would happily upgrade my rating to a 5.0, as what is included in the course is excellent and useful material.
