One hour Kotlin guide for beginners (Udemy.com)

Compact and quick Kotlin guide from Kotlin basic to OOP programming.

Created by: Tutlets Kkang

Last updated June 2018

Our take

Based on the ratings of 874 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.

Free, 80 minutes, 16 lectures: this is a crash course in Kotlin syntax for people who already program in Java, C++ or something similar. Tutlets Kkang, a Korean instructor who has written books on Android and Kotlin, walks through variables, collections, null safety, functions and the OOP basics in three short sections. The "beginner" label is misleading. It is for beginners to Kotlin, not beginners to programming, and reviewers keep saying so.

Students praise how clear and compact it is. One reviewer calls it one of the few courses where all the examples actually work, and Java developers like that it points out exactly where Kotlin differs from what they know. The complaints are consistent. The three-star reviews want more examples and more explanation of why you'd use, say, an abstract class. True beginners find the OOP section too technical. And the IntelliJ setup lecture shows a version of the IDE that no longer matches what you download; the course hasn't been updated since 2018.

The 4.1 rating from 874 reviews is fair for what this is: a quick, free reference, not a curriculum. The other Kotlin picks on our list are full Android app bootcamps. This one is the opposite, an evening's worth of syntax to work through before starting one of those. Recommended for Java or Android developers who want the language basics fast. Anyone new to programming should start somewhere with more hand-holding and more examples.

Best forJava or Android developers who want Kotlin's syntax and null safety explained in one sitting.
Skip it ifYou've never programmed before; reviewers say the OOP section assumes you already know the terms.

Pros

  • Covers variables, collections, null safety, functions and OOP in 16 lectures and about 80 minutes
  • Reviewers say every code example works as shown, which makes it a handy reference
  • Points out exactly where Kotlin differs from Java, which one Java developer singles out as its strength
  • Free and fluff-free; even a three-star reviewer calls it a good quick review

Cons

  • Not updated since June 2018; the IntelliJ setup lecture no longer matches the current IDE
  • Too few examples and little on why to use features like abstract classes
  • No quizzes, coding exercises or assignments, and no captions
This is a great course if you are a java developer and want a quick guide to start diving into Kotlin. It's specially good at marking the diferences between the two lenguajes.
Victoria Augé, a student

Labelled beginner, but it assumes Java or C++ experience; total newcomers to programming will struggle with the OOP section.

This is a great course if you are a java developer and want a quick guide to start diving into Kotlin. It's specially good at marking the diferences between the two lenguajes. On the other hand, if you are a beginner programmer in general, the basic concepts are not really explained, so you are better starting on another more basic course.

By David Robinson on 9/24/2023

There is a lot of information in this course. It is succinct and clear. If you want to try things it is a slow course. Start up IntelliJ and test things. One of the few courses where all the examples work. A valuable reference cours.

By William Kean on 8/8/2021

It would be nice if it added an explanation of the layout of a Kotlin programme. Also, it isn't so much for beginners as for those unfamiliar with Kotlin.

By Christopher Ringrow on 8/5/2021

The download and installation and use of of IntelliJ is now different so it would be good if that could be updated in the course. However the course was a good concise introduction to Kotlin. Well done.

By Jan Martin Porcher on 11/17/2020

Very concise, good explanations. I started learning Java not too long ago and it helped me get an overview in very short time.

By Georgina Covarrubias on 7/17/2020

A good supplement or starter if you plan to supplement with other learning. Clear audio and clear examples of what is being taught. Thank you for this course!

By Slava Kutuzov on 5/21/2020

A pretty brief introduction, I give it 3 stars because there were a few things that felt cut out, I mean, I did find the answers on Stackoverflow, but still... The sound was cut in a place in which you would expect an explanation

By Roman Ugryumov on 9/27/2019

Хороший курс. Изложено четко и кратко. Будет полезно для тех, кто умеет программировать и необходимо быстро войти в новый синтаксис языка.

By Mayur Musrif on 7/30/2019

Yes. Course is good but the voice quality can be improved. I would also prefer Kotlin tutorials with Android Studio.

By Nageshwor Shah on 7/8/2019
