Course Description

This course is updated for KiCad 9

I have recorded several new lectures in Section 13 to explain the most important new features and improvements in KiCad 9.

The lectures in this section cover a range of topics, including the introduction of Jobsets for structured project management, the Bezier curve tool in all editors, and the Zone Manager for improved control over copper pours. Other lectures discuss the use of Design Blocks for reusing schematic and layout sections, updates to the Autorouter, and the Multiple Track Drag feature for modifying routed traces more efficiently. Additionally, the section includes coverage of Pad Stacks with different copper shapes, 3D model export improvements, the Precision Positioning Tool for accurate placement, and the Tables feature for showing structured information in the schematic and the layout. The Selection Filterin the schematic editor and Component Classes are also explored, highlighting their role in refining schematic organization and circuit design.

Also... New project and recipes! I’ve added a brand-new hands-on project to this course: the Tiny Solar Power Supply.

This project walks you through the complete design of a compact solar-powered regulator circuit, from schematic to PCB layout and preparation for manufacturing.

I’ve also expanded the Recipes section with new content that shows you how to use KiCad’s integrated circuit simulator. You’ll learn how to simulate basic analog circuits directly in the schematic editor — a powerful tool for validating your design before layout.

This course is updated for KiCad 8

This update contains many new and updated lectures to teach you the new features in KiCad 8. For those lectures that I created replacements for, I have moved them to new sections titled "Legacy" so you can still access them. Most new and updated content is in sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 12 (Recipes).

Welcome to KiCad Like a Pro.

This course will help you learn how to design Printed Circuit Boards using KiCad.

KiCad is an open-source, free-to-use, and unrestricted tool for PCB design. It is the world's most popular open-source PCB tool for electronics engineers and hobbyists.

KiCad is supported by a dedicated team of volunteer developers and a growing community of users and contributors.

To create this edition of KiCad Like a Pro, I have used KiCad 7 and KiCad 8.

This course will teach you KiCad so that you can use it in your commercial or hobby projects. It takes a practical approach to learning that combines "how-to" content with complete start-to-finish PCB projects.

If you are new to PCB design, this course will help you start from the ground level. If you are an experienced PCB designer, this course will help you transition to KiCad from another tool or an earlier version of KiCad.

Please read the course description and watch the free lectures in the first section to get more information about this course.

I look forward to learning with you!

It is a brillliant course to get started with PCB design in general. The step-by-step explanation of the entire tool paired up with pcb design nuances being taught in parallel made it really easy to grasp. Great place to get started.

It is the best course i have taken for PCB design and the tutor has done an amazing job, cannot explain how happy i am to learn PCB design with this much efficiency. i would love to explore more courses by MR. Peter Dematris such as ESP32 for Arduino Makers etc

The quality of teaching is fantastic but the instructor should have taught little differently. Project based learning would have been more interesting rather than these chapter or section wise explanation. Lectures become boring when you have to do nothing and just watch which items is where and what does it do or how does it work. Section 4-5-6-7-8-9 are great but boring. Multiple projects more would have explained all these.

There are many people with that maker enthusiasm inside them, dreaming of a world where they can build anything themselves. But it eventually all comes down to electronics, which can feel like a total jungle. From Ohm’s Law to high-speed LattePanda modules... these days, no matter what current is flowing, it all leads to EDA—Electronic Design Automation. KiCad is to electronics design what Blender has become for 3D graphics; it is becoming an unstoppable force at the top of the industry. If you want to master KiCad and actually understand the details, this is the essential starting point. You'll need the foundation laid here to survive the next steps in the series—like the ESP32 and LattePanda courses—and especially the new masterclass on 0.5 mm pitch BGA routing on 2-layer boards. This is the best course to begin that journey!

I completed till section 6 and I would say though the course is good and covers lots of aspects, the upbeat music at the intro and outro is very very annoying. Video lengths can be better. I believe whole section 6 can be a single video. Each video is almost 1 min, with 30 seconds of unbearable music. There is no point of dividing videos to such small lengths. I will give the rest of the review at the end of the course. The content looks good till now.

I enrolled in this course with no prior experience in KiCad, and it turned out to be a fantastic learning journey. The instructor breaks down each topic in a clear, step-by-step manner, making it easy to grasp the basics from the ground up. By the time I finished the course, I felt self-assured in creating my own PCB designs — something I’m really proud of.

Very clear and interesting, except one thing: the intro music tends to drown out the speaker such that his first few words are inaudible (I don't like to miss anything.)

This is a very valuable and practical course for learning KiCad, especially for PCB design. The only minor issue is that some Git command updates are shown differently, as Git commands on Windows vary slightly compared to other operating systems.

I started this course as a complete beginner in KiCad, and it has been an excellent learning experience. The instructor explains everything clearly, step-by-step, which helped me understand KiCad from scratch. By the end of the course, I now feel confident in designing PCBs on my own — which is a big achievement for me. The course content is well-structured, practical, and very helpful. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn KiCad from zero and build confidence in PCB design. One suggestion for improvement: it would be great if the instructor could provide PPT or PDF notes for schematic and PCB design workflows, as it would help students track their progress and revise concepts more easily. Hopefully, this can be added in the future.
