Course Description

Person-Centred Counselling is a humanistic approach that emphasises the creation of a non-judgmental and empathetic therapeutic relationship, allowing clients to explore their feelings, experiences, and self-concept to facilitate personal growth and self-acceptance. In this introductory course, you will learn about the core concepts, theories and skills used in Person-Centred Counselling.

This course delves into the fundamental principles and techniques that define the practice of counselling. Rooted in the person-centred approach pioneered by Carl Rogers, you'll gain an in-depth understanding of how counselling empowers individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

The core tenets include three crucial conditions for therapeutic change: empathy, where the counsellor truly understands the client's perspective; unconditional positive regard, showing complete acceptance and non-judgment; and congruence, which is the counsellor's authenticity and transparency. Rogers believed that these conditions create the necessary psychological climate for clients to explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences and, in turn, achieve greater self-understanding, self-acceptance, and personal development.

This humanistic approach places emphasis on the client's unique subjective experience and personal autonomy, emphasising the importance of the therapeutic relationship in fostering positive change. By studying concepts such as empathy, active listening, and unconditional positive regard, you'll learn about the process of creating a therapeutic space that allows clients to find solutions to their problems, gain self-awareness, and move forward on their personal growth journey.

This course is an invaluable gateway to comprehending the core principles of counselling and its practical application. It is a foundational resource for psychotherapists and mental health professionals interested in exploring in adding counselling skills to their work life, CV, or personal relationships.

We will cover:

  • Gain a deep understanding of the foundations and principles of person-centred counselling.

  • Develop a thorough grasp of key counselling terminology and concepts.

  • Explore the history and development of the person-centred approach, including its therapeutic alliance.

  • Differentiate person-centred counselling from other therapeutic modalities, such as psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural approaches.

  • Identify the core conditions crucial for effective counselling, including empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence.

  • Examine essential counselling skills, such as active listening, reflecting, summarising, and validation.

  • Understand the application of person-centred counselling in various scenarios, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and more.

  • Explore the role of culture and diversity in counselling, fostering cultural competencies and inclusivity.

  • Discover what it's like to work as a counsellor, including aspects of ethical frameworks, confidentiality, boundaries, and self-care.

  • Gain insights into outcome assessment and the evaluation of counselling effectiveness.

  • Explore the practicalities and considerations of telecounselling and working online.

You will learn through a variety of ways including video lessons, reading, reflection exercises and multiple-choice quizzes. This course is suitable for those who are new to counselling, or those with existing counselling skills who are looking to understand the person-centred approach.

This course is accredited by the International Association of Therapists. On completion, you'll receive the standard Udemy certificate of completion. If you wish to become a registered member of the BACP you will require further training.

It was a wonderful Course! The lessons were interesting and very informative... But the questions weren’t so much difficult as they were open-ended, with more than one possible answer. I didn’t feel like they were questions so much as they were traps! And that tired me out a bit— "Jenny" tired me out too... Maybe that’s because I’m not a native English speaker and English isn’t my first language… but that doesn’t take anything away from the value of this course. Thank you, Dr. Chris!!

The course was good, information was disseminated well, but the issue I had (which is the only real issue) was that the volume was not even across the course. I had to turn my speakers waaaay up for some lectures, and then suddenly get blasted in the next video / cut. Additionally, the AI that was used for roleplay seems to have missed a few things, in that the goals were actually addressed, but it wouldn't recognise that, and that I couldn't use my mic, but typed out instead, and the time limits were still the same, though it takes longer to type and effectively communicate. Still a great course, thank you Chris! I've signed up for a bunch of your other courses!

Sharing his expertise, knowledge, and experience motivates me wanting to learn more about being the better me. The power dynamics is crucial to maintaining Relationship Alliance for overall growth whether it's on one side, (the client Intune themselves) or for both sides (Counsellor and client or Counsellor and staff).

I loved the course contents and the way they were made very easy for even a layman without much knowledge about psychology and the jargons. I would have rated it a 5 if there were more clinical examples with how the counselling skills can be put into actual practice & One roleplay of how it all plays out in an actual therapy room. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge. It also serves as a gateway to this modality by piquing your interest in wanting to know more.

While I go for the CBT diploma and counseling would not be my first choice, the course (like all the instructor's other courses) is well presented. I learned that counseling is a bit too dynamic for me, and I like to have a kind of structure. So I dive into the instructor's CBT-related courses.

I really enjoyed this course. It showed me where my strengths are, where my weaknesses are, and where I can improve both of them. Chris explains things in ways that makes sense, easy to understand, language, with references and examples from the real world. I think that is something everyone can appreciate.

Chris W. is definitely my favorite teacher so far. I have taken two of his courses and am thrilled with the passionate and clear way he teaches. It also invites you to ask yourself questions that have been critical to understanding myself. I am taking two of his courses that I had purchased from other teachers, this is because Chris is so much more passionate and knowledgeable than others. I am a voracious student and I study a lot, I love to study but it is not easy to find a teacher who really knows how to teach, Chris is. Then see you at your lessons!

I thought this course was brilliant. It was perfect as a thorough introduction to person centred counselling and I found Chris' delivery and explanations really clear. It has inspired me to go on and learn more about the person centred approach. Thanks so much Chris!
