Course Description

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a contemporary and evidence-based form of cognitive behavioural therapy that offers a unique approach to enhancing psychological wellbeing. In this introductory course, you will learn about the core concepts, theories and skills used in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

At its core, ACT harnesses the power of mindfulness-based techniques to help individuals build essential skills in psychological flexibility. Unlike traditional therapies that primarily focus on symptom reduction, ACT places a profound emphasis on empowering individuals to make meaningful life changes and live in accordance with their values and aspirations.

This therapeutic model is founded on the idea that, by accepting their thoughts and emotions without judgment, individuals can cultivate the capacity to respond to life's challenges in more adaptive and constructive ways. ACT provides a practical framework for individuals to build resilience, identify their values, and commit to actions that lead to a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

ACT is a transdiagnostic approach that has gained recognition and recommendation from respected global health and psychological organisations including the World Health Organisation, NHS and American Psychological Association.

This course is an invaluable gateway to comprehending the core principles of ACT and its practical application. It is a foundational resource for psychotherapists and mental health professionals interested in exploring ACT, as well as individuals aspiring to apply ACT principles to enhance their own wellbeing.

Throughout the course, you will delve into the theoretical foundations, practical techniques, and the underlying principles of ACT, which include:

  • A comprehensive understanding of what ACT is and the theoretical framework it is built upon.

  • An exploration of the limitations of traditional therapeutic methods, including traditional CBT, and why ACT offers an alternative path.

  • A detailed examination of the six processes of psychological flexibility, the cornerstone of ACT.

  • A step-by-step guide to the delivery of ACT, providing you with practical insights into its application.

  • Insights into building a robust therapeutic alliance, a pivotal component of ACT's success.

The course is thoughtfully designed, featuring video lectures, downloadable resources, quizzes, practical exercises, and a comprehensive course handbook. The practical exercises give you a chance to try out ACT techniques on yourself and finish the course with a variety of skills for building psychological flexibility.

This course is accredited by the International Association of Therapists. On completion, you'll receive the standard Udemy certificate of completion. If you wish to become a registered member of the BABCP, you will require further training.

No prior knowledge of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is required for this course. You do not need a background in cognitive behavioural therapy or mindfulness, although having one may aid understanding. All concepts will be explained from the ground up.

Highly recommend this course! I've just recently started a role as a Health Improvement Practitioner and decided to take this course to unskill my knowledge on ACT. Chris is a very good tutor who explains the theory step by step. This course is easy to follow and Chris offers great resources along the way. It has definitely helped me understand my role better and how to apply ACT with patients.

As always modern and fresh approach to psychology, psychotherapy, coaching and counselling along with mental health well being without the use of filler words from a youngish clinical psychologist who thoroughly knows his subject arena and is genuinely passionate about it - this is evidenced throughout all of his courses which i can highly recommend

Trainer is very clear, speaks well, and makes concepts very easy to absorb and follow. Many of the other ACT courses involve non-native English speaking trainers and, as a result, the reviews said they were hard to follow. I am really happy with this course and I’m glad I went for it!

I was a little skeptical of the possible quality of the course, as Udemy offer a a number of 'counselling courses' that claim you will be a qualified counsellor upon completion of them. Which of course is not the case. But I feel like I am getting some excellent CPD training here. Pleased keep surprising me!! I also really like the way the trainer smiles after every lecture, it's really great and I feel very supported in my learning.

I really enjoyed the thorough, brief overview of ACT and am excited to begin using it more in my personal work as a therapist!

I started a doctoral project focused on implementing an ACT intervention; and I knew 0 about it. This course really helped me get the gist of it, just enough to start my path. So thank you! Maybe it is my student side complaining, but I would have liked to download a PDF in the conclusion section with all the main references.

I like that the videos are more like "short clips" vs. more longer (7-10 minute) clips. It makes the training more fun/exciting vs. feeling boring. I also appreciate the trainer's attitude/demeanor - he frequently leaves me smiling too.

A nice course that explained the concepts of ACT in a simple yet crisp manner. I liked the way a lot of metaphors were used. The lectures are short and to the point with not much fluff but the 1 minutes lecture some how feel can be clubbed with the 2 min lecture because the momentum is broken very fast with too short lectures.

I've now done most of his Psychology courses: CBT, MBCT, Mindfulness Teacher Training, Social Psychology Foundation, Metacognitive, Life Coaching and now this and they are ALL fantastic! best psychology courses out there on Udemy! highly recommend. This particular course is out of my stream of study, I have opted for it because I wanted to learn something new because I have been interested in psychology. This course has been really helpful and we realise that we have been practicing some of these but did not know they have names. I suggest you all to take up the course as the concepts are really interesting and helpful.
