Most Power BI reports fail before a single chart is drawn. The data arrives in three files with different column names, the dates are stored as text, and half the rows are duplicates. This course is about that half of the job.

You will work entirely in the Power BI Query Editor: connect to a source, shape it, clean it, and save the steps, so that next month's file loads the same way in one click.

I completed my university degree in economics and emerged keen and eager to change the world. I spent the first half of my career working for multinational companies, on projects of various sizes, in different sectors, all revolving around analysing data of some sort and working with different software products, including Microsoft Excel.


I found that so many Excel users had a very basic understanding of how Excel works, and instead of using Excel to do the work for them, were doing all the work themselves, using old spreadsheet technology like macros instead of embracing technology like Pivot Tables. Pivot Tables were actually introduced into Excel in 1994 but many Excel users have avoided using them because they seem complicated and difficult to use.


In 2008 I decided to start my own training company and this was borne out of the passion I had to teach Excel users how to work smarter, not harder. As technology evolved, and new systems developed, I continuously expanded my training to include Power BI, Amazon QuickSight, Looker Studio, and most recently Copilot in Excel and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

I enjoyed this course and felt he did a good job of explaining the why behind things. I would have liked more hands on practice but appreciate I could see each step he was taking. I ironically am not a fan of the AI driven practice sessions. I do not like talking to a machine so wish there was less of that. I also felt the Power BI Service portion was not needed as many will not have the ability to utilize it. I would have liked to see examples and practice on using multiple data sources in the same report that are refreshed monthly and how that would work within a report and how to set that up. But, this was specific to Query so I can see why it was not included. Overall, well done for such a short course.

Some of the files are out of date; the "date" column from lesson 1 is not fixable - it will not look like the instructors, following the instructions leads to "null" fields...had to work around. Lesson 14 goes very fast - the practical asks for answers using steps/features not explained or shown. The student will need to decide 1-do i just watch and try to complete after the lesson or 2-do i pause video multiple times and try to keep up? Both are very difficult.

This was a very good course for me, I learned a lot of features and functions that I have not had a chance to learn prior. This course is especially useful for my co-workers who have never seen Power Query (Query Editor) or Power BI before. This course will give them a detailed overview of what Query Editor can do and will teach them the foundational skills they will need to start using Power BI and Query Editor right away.
