Learn the essentials of R Programming - R Beginner Level!

Our take
Based on the ratings of 19,341 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
Martin from R-Tutorials built this as a free entry point to R, and the numbers show it has landed. About 230,000 students have enrolled, and the rating is 4.6 across 19,341 reviews. The syllabus is short: 29 lectures and about 4.2 hours, covering installing R and RStudio, add-on packages, importing data, functions, loops and basic graphs. The last section is bonus material pulled from other R-Tutorials courses, so the core is just over three hours. It is aimed at people with no programming background.
Reviewers like the slow pace and the plain explanations. One calls the pace adequate for beginners, and another says the course script helped them apply what they learned. The complaints are small but real. One student found the narrator's articulation hard to follow, with word endings swallowed. A three-star reviewer says the instructor sometimes jumps into more advanced plotting with plotrix and moves quickly, which gets overwhelming. Another felt lost when a machine learning example appeared without enough setup.
The course was last updated in 2018, so expect older tooling. The data lists no quizzes or coding exercises, though the description mentions exercises and downloadable code from the demos to type along with. The reviews suggest it does the job of a gentle first look, so take it for that. If you want depth or a project, plan to follow it with a longer course.
Pros
- Slow, plain-spoken pacing that reviewers say suits true beginners
- Covers RStudio setup, packages, data import, loops and basic graphs in about 4 hours
- Downloadable course script lets students follow along and apply the code
- Free, with about 230,000 students and a 4.6 rating from 19,341 reviews
Cons
- Last updated in 2018, so the tooling and screens are older
- One reviewer found the narrator's articulation and accent hard to follow
- Occasionally rushes into advanced plotting or machine learning without enough setup
This was a very good course. The pace was adequate, and the level of explanations is also appropriate for beginners to understand. Recommended!
Suits true beginners, though the listing asks for a basic grasp of statistics and data structure.

This is an amazing course for beginners. This course touches every point in R lightly, and the course script made you able to apply what you learn. I am really enjoying this.

Very good for beginners, but the Machine Learning angle was not well explained before deployed. I was lost, but went through it. Hopefully will try other courses for better explanation. Overall, it is a good start.

By far, Mr. Martin has been giving out concepts in a very specific and detailed manner which is making me feel that, even though with not much prior knowledge of coding, I would be able to figure things out of it quite well.

Great course. Took me a while due to commitments but Marc is a very skilled instructor taking time through each course. Highly recommended for beginners.

For a basic, introductory course, it delivers what it promises, it is well structured and well explained. Sometimes the German accent of the instructor made me return and repeat some points several times until I understand whatever the point was, but it was not a big deal. I recognize the instructor's great effort to be clear and well understood. One improvement suggestion, however: Since Udemy has the differential of allowing the course to be downloaded for offline access on a cell phone, this (and all other) course(s) of R which make use of RStudio should prefer to adopt a DARK color scheme for RStudio (one in which RStudio's background is dark and the letters lighter). It would help much to see better when we take the course on a small screen, in addition to letting the eyes less tired.

Excellent basic R introduction. Also includes much information regarding RStudio utility from the 'didn't know I didn't know' category. Challenging, but clearly presented.
By Vineel Garisa on 3/9/2017
Amazing explanation and easily understandable language. Very excited to learn this course under this instructor. wonderful course work so far, and It would be great if there is a complete course material for beginning to ending. Amazing, even though there are few complicated materials and packages in Rstudio but it is very fun to learn. I have gained enough confidence to learn in depth in R programming.
