Course Description
Have you ever had analytical questions that are easy to ask, but surprisingly hard to answer with regular analytical tools? Do you often find yourself asking questions involving different data layers? Like comparing a single category to a whole table; or applying filters on particular fields; or tracking the behaviour of custom cohorts over time - just to mention a few classic examples.
Do you want to know how to compare data aggregated at different levels of granularity?
Do you often bump into the error message: 'Cannot mix aggregate and non-aggregate values'?
Do Tableau terms FIXED, INCLUDE or EXCLUDE confuse you? Are you struggling choosing the right one for particular tasks?
Do you want to step up your daily analytical game and gain new, useful skills?
If you are a passionate Tableau user and you can associate yourself with one or more of the questions above, then this course is for you. Scenarios like the ones mentioned above occur on a daily basis, and they can cause quite a bit of headache for the analyst. Tableau has many great tools and functions including table calculations that make everyday life easier for the data scientist.
One strong point of the software is its responsiveness. Plotting measures against variables has never been easier: each change to the shelves is instantly and automatically applied on the view - a great environment to interact with the data. This strong point, however, can easily be turned into a weakness, if you want your analysis to step out of the borders of the view level of detail.
In Tableau, to solve classic analytical problems (such as cohort analysis, retention analysis or binning aggregates by dimensions), or to proceed with special filtering scenarios (like proportional brushing or relative comparisons) you need to be familiar with a special tool set called the level of detail (LOD) expressions.
In this course, you will learn about the general mechanics of LOD expressions both in theory and practice. We start from the very basics and then we proceed to more advanced techniques in a stepwise manner. If you are not familiar with the concept of LOD expressions yet, but you are already a Tableau user, then taking this course will most probably improve your analytical skills and broaden your tool set.
After completing this course, you will be able to solve all above mentioned analytical challenges and even more, because LOD expressions let the analyst come up with creative solutions for custom scenarios. Instead of asking the questions you can be the one in the office who always has a practical answer or a constructive idea. Take a look at the content of this course, and I bet you won’t regret it.

The overall information was good. I had a problem throughout the course with the view being discussed was not always matching up with what was being shown. An example of this is that he was discussing creating a calculation, he would then show a slide to make a point, but when he went back to the calculation, the screen would be showing a different view or project or even editing a different calculation. It was very difficult to stay on the same page as the instructor.

It's good material and presentation but Section 2.15 Finding Dates with LOD Calculation there are many edits in the video where underlying changes were spontaneously made to the visualization (like changes in prior calculations on calculated fields, changes to pills on the shelf, addition of dimensions to color marks). These would automatically appear during the instructors voice over narration. If you're working along the code does not work - I had to really stop and figure out what changed and then fix things to be able to keep up.

Just perfect! I wanted to take a structured and detailed course on LODs to brush up my knowledge and perfect my basics. This course just provided me the same. Also, the scenarios and use cases provided in the lectures will always serve as a reference to become a 'great' analyst as the course promises.

If you want to (finally) have a solid undestanding of LOD expressions, this is the course to go to. LOD for me at least was so far the most complicated part of Tableau, but they are lifesavers. Every now and then I managed to use an LOD succesfully but never quite grasp them completely. What helps the most are the practice exercises with every LOD and the different approaches to the same problem, as well as the accompanying explanations of what actually happens in background to get that result. Truly a great course.

What else can you expect if you are enrolled for an Advanced Tableau course by 'R-Tutorials' at Udemy? Instructor is really the best in the class, great mastery over the each topic. He not only explained the LOD techniques but also demonstrated that how to test your results. All the Case Study Examples are excellent for real world scenarios. Each minute of this course made a good learning curve for me. (FYI, sometimes you might need to rewind or replay the videos to match the advance speed of the course.)

Hard course to fully grasp. But well worth working through all the examples given. Eventually the complex topic of LOD Expressions begins to sink in and best of all, ideas begin to arise where you can apply them in your own work. Get the hang of this and you will save hours trying to puzzle creating visualisations without applying LOD Expressions. A bonus is that in many examples the tutor refers back to the core data via Excel and explains well why numbers don't add up as you might expect in a viz. Tableau is shaping up to be my analytic tool of choice now. I was keen on Qlik and PowerBI before but have been put off by their packaging and time spent dealing with upgrade changes which impacted many of my dashboards and user login issues and licenses (I did get pretty far with PowerBI - integrating R as a data source, which almost had me hooked using PowerBI ~ but the cleaning of data and some awful crunching crashing moments when too much data and convoluted relationships were involved). Tableau does cope well with many to many data relationships where PowerBI did tie me up playing with their modelling tool. Tableau seems expensive at first but the fact you can pass on files the are accessible via the free copy of Tableau Reader, it becomes infinite in what solutions you are able to distribute. My thanks to the Tutors on Udemy like this one for breaking down the knowledge barriers in such enlightening ways. Rob

My best investment so far on Udemy both in terms of money as well as time. Nice presentation and the story picks up well from one slide to another. Nice pace too. I love the explanation between the LODs which is important since i believe LODs are the most important features in Tableau for deep diving. LODs are not straightforward and hence it will take time before one can master it but the tutorials here are damn good. Would recommend it any day.

Great Course and wonderful examples. The subject is an advanced topic as the title states but it was explained beautifully & professionally by the Tutor. It will take sometime to understand the concepts and with practice it should become good but this curse examples & materials will be of immense help during that learning process. I am looking forward to more such courses from this team. Awesome R-Tutorial!!!

Martin does an excellent job of explaining what the three LOD expressions are and utilizes real world examples to teach why you would want to use them. I was confused in other classes as to their real purpose, but this has cleared it all up and I feel confident in their use. Thank you Martin!

This course is great! I have spent months reading about LODs and Nested LODs and trying them work for me - I fail more often than I succeed in its use, and when I do succeed, I am not always able to explain why. This course helped me understand LODs more in depth and more importantly, it enforces the concepts for situations where LOD doesn't work the way we expect them to. I'm so glad I took this course!
